heavy bar stools+new wood floors=anxiety

Despite being overwhelmed by my the amount of renovation dust in my kitchen, I've decided to turn my focus to things I can attempt to control...such as preventing my hardwood from being scraped up. Which brings me to my question:

Once this dust is gone and I'm actually functioning in my perfect, brand new kitchen (*click Ruby red shoes here*) is there any product that anyone has found to help protect floors (hardwood, oak) from being scratched by pretty darn heavy metal barstools? I've owned these barstools for 5 years, despite never owning a "bar/island" area to accommodate them---one of those, "well at least SOMEDAY they'll match the dining table and wine rack" purchases---so anyway, would some mat thing just look silly? Any other products that would work? Should I buy lighter stools?

Basically it's two bar-height stools that will go on my 2 level island in the middle of the kitchen. I also know about those fabric-pads you can stick to the bottom of chairs but I'm worried they might not hold up with the back and forth sliding motion. I'm also expecting the island to be a popular seating area...

I have so many good ideas from this post. Thanks so much! You have encouraged me to jump outside my (green and traditional) box :) I feel like I have the courage to try several different things and styles instead of boxing myself in. You've given me lots of places to shop that I've never seen before, too. I plan to buy several types of things to "try them out" as soon as I get the chance. Then, I'll just take back what doesn't work. It'll be an annoyance to drive back and forth to stores an hour away, but I really have to SEE it. I would love to paint my kitchen and living room that gray color above (first, doing it in my hallway). I'm so impatient - I want it all done today! Then, perhaps, I can get this kitchen finished and move on to the living room. Gotta convince my husband to stop working so much and work on the house instead!

I was glad to see this thread because it was something that I had not considered. I never intended to have a stone top because the used kitchen I bought came with a butcher block top. Well, we don't think we are going to like the wood, even after it is re-sanded. Plus, we dropped it and it split in two. I imagine it can be repaired (it is after all, glued together wood in the first place) but we are now looking at stone or porcelain. When I read that swiveling stools have chipped the edges of islands, I was relieved that the counter stools I got on Craigslist are completely upholstered and cushioned, front and back. I think that this will solve the problem for me, and I imagine it would work for a lot of you. Those parsons chair type stools should also work.

Glad you like it, it was on my main Houzz feed and I thought of your kitchen right away. It has the same 'feel' to me. I found it a bit cheaper on this site: A & B Home Harper Pendant $136 They say its 20.9" long and 12.6 inches wide. I like it with the new stools because, again, it shares a rustic french country feel in my eyes. I think they definitely would look good together and with the kitchen as a whole. But only you can decide whether these pendants work with the stools and/or the sink light. They're far enough apart but the styles seem different. Is the sink a schoolhouse? Since the sink light is so neutral and simple, a pretty 'working' light, I could definitely live with it.

If you're keeping your countertops, I wouldn't paint the island white. I think it will make the countertops look dingy. I like the color your valance brings to the kitchen. Perhaps pull from that for accessories for countertops. I agree with clearing off the refrigerator if possible. Since your island has an unusual shape, perhaps you could replace your center fixture with a track fixture that will conform to the shape of the island. Then you could attach 3 pendants to it. Changing the red wall to the same color as the other walls will brighten things up a bit. The plant shelf is a great idea. You could also add upholstered stools in a color that coordinates with your valance. A change of hardware would help as well. Perhaps a brushed nickel in a transitional style. I like Jeffrey Alexander hardware. I find it to be a very nice quality but reasonably priced. Mine were about $6.00 each. Hope this helps!

Oh, I worry about this too! I had protectors on my old stools but they still scratched the floor....back then I didn't care as much because the floors were so old and scratched already. But with the new kitchen....I might be totally obsessed by the chance of scratches. Hope these suckers work!

The felt pads work well, just take care to vac/sweep grit regularly. If you get even a couple of grains of sand stuck in that felt, it turns it into sandpaper.

I've tried a few different brands of the felt protectors. The first ones I got came off all the time. I finally found Bona FloorGards worked really well.

Also picked up the Ace Brand at our local Ace Hardware and they are staying on well. Ace also has "self-leveling" protectors which adjust to uneven floors (my barstools are where the wood floor was patched and I need them!). Ace Floor Protectors

After refinishing our floor I had the same thought (particularly after paying the bill for the refinishing), I don't want to have to do this again any time soon... I bought the Slip Stick "sliders" for my barstools, they replace the original nylon pads and screw in (but also have adhesive) so they will stay put.

You didn't ask about this, but just as a general FYI, Slip Stick also offers "Grippers" which I put on my sofa and chairs which sit on the wood floors as well, and OHMYGOSH, if only I'd found these before. For years my stuff has slid every time someone sat down on it, even when I had the front feet on rugs --- now everything stays right where I put it. Love this slip stick stuff. I was able to find it at Rocker as well as a local True Value store. I think I even was able to pick it up via Amazon (can you tell I've gone gaga over this stuff???). I never had much luck with felt staying on, have tried the felt bottom cups and gripper cup things from Home Depot and they mostly stayed put while my furniture jumped out of them, I got pretty tired of wrenching my back trying to lift them back into the cups so I gave up.
