Freshen up this kitchen..
Comments (16)I agree with the others that your kitchen is just fine and attractive for now and quite nice as is. Your former kitchen is very pretty and jazzy. You can make this one reflect your style now even though you are planning a remodel in the future. For now, I would paint the walls and accessorize, keep the appliances if they work, perhaps freshen the cabinets with a coat of paint only if needed., select or make a window treatment. Changing hardware can be expensive although Target has some that I have used that have held up and look just as good as pricier choices if you choose something simple. I agree that putting a small inexpensive microwave in the corner is just right for the needs of teenage boys, so no microwave hood. They are big and pricey anyway. Why spend the money? I see your wanting to open the space by removing the uppers, but a consideration besides the need for storage is the ceiling. If your ceiling is textured, it may not be textured under the cabinets. So bottom line- keep tabs on how much money you are saving by not doing "unnecessary for now" changes and use for it for the real remodel. It may just buy you some extras or enable you to do the project sooner. It is so exciting to have a new space to create. Comments (10)Some inexpensive fixes: Stain the oak something rich and dark, like walnut. I did this in my old bathroom. First I used wood filler and a LOT of sandpaper to get rid of the oak grain. Then I primed, painted a dark chocolate brown, then gel stained walnut, and followed with a couple of coats of poly. I changed out the hardware too. Then I switched the "hag lights" out to a new set. They were on sale for $60 at HD. It was easy to do. Check eBay and craigslist for good deals. My counters were laminate and not in good shape, so I had to do something with them. Your counters seem to be in good shape and look nice IMHO, so no need to spend money there. I switched out the faucets, which isn't difficult as long as you choose a new one with the same footprint. You don't want to have to drill new holes. I found good prices on eBay for new faucets. I got rid of the builder's mirror and switched out for 2 nicer mirrors, also on sale at HD at $140 for the set. I LOVE their clearance rack! Other places to look are Target, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, Lowes, etc. I personally am not a fan of the wallpaper especially since you seem to want something different and richer looking. Whether you find a different paper or decide to paint is your starting point. If you want wallpaper, all your colors are going to be based off that. If you paint, the sky is the limit. I'm not really good at suggesting specific colors but others here really are experts at it. My color was based off the tile I chose. I'd get rid of the gold hardware as it dates the room. Comments (22)I do think it would be a good idea to take down the cabinets above the peninsula, it will open the space up tremendously. I would also make the desk area into a full blown pantry. I think you will find that a much better use of space. If cost is a consideration I would keep the cabinet doors and put that money toward the pantry. I think your cabinets will look fine when they are painted. I do agree with the other commenter that it is very difficult to judge the colours that you have presented. Trying to tell the difference in those subtle colours is almost impossible in these pictures, so you will need to trust yourself on that one....See MoreHelp me freshen up my kitchen please!
Comments (17)you are my style twin! I love all of these looks. I recently did a kitchen reno; and did white cabinets / dark grey island with white countertops.....and I'm a sucker for greys and moulding; adding white moulding on the walls made SUCH an impact on all of the space and although a bit of extra work, is fairly inexpensive to do for the WOW factor it gives and I can totally see that in your space! inexpensive but impactful changes I could see being amazing in your space too, are changing the metal railing to a horizontal metal style, painting the fireplace white, and having a dark accent colour on the little wall that the fireplace is on; and changing the cabinet hardware and pendants to a rattan or more nautical style. Also, ballard is AMAZING. Have you looked at Serena and Lily? ugh, my absolute fav....now to just win the lottery haha...See Moremomtotwins
