What I'm getting at is that if your media has unwanted moss or is infested with whatever, it's best to toss it. If it doesn't seem unhealthy, by all means, re-use it.

Mima, I once read that when you plant a clematis, put the rootball in the soil horizonally rather than vertically. I don't remember WHY they said to do this, but it's always worked for me. So I dig a small trench, lay the clematis in on its side, cover it up, then put a flat rock -- say 8"x10"x1-1/2" -- over where the rootball is planted. I figure since I've never gotten around to groundcover, the rock will do the "shade" job well enough. My Nelly Moser and Jackmanii both have more blooms than leaves. And remember the rule with clematis... first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap! Holly

I am always skeptical of what is in wikipedia, especially when a claim like that is not followed by a citation. For all we know the only person claiming it to be native to both continents is the person who wrote the wikipedia entry. My best sources state that Draba verna was introduced from Eurasia. It probably has been here for a long time, as Aldo Leopold included a short section in his Sand County Almanac titled "Draba".

Very nice! Down here the daffodils have started blooming. The fields will be yellow for a couple of months because they are in everybody's yards and naturalized all over the sides of the highways.
