Whitlow Grass Native or Not?

I spotted the first flowers of Spring in this part of Massachusetts today Â some tiny little white blossoms growing from tiny plants mixed in with the grass around my office. Yay flowers! I did some research, and found the name of the plant: Whitlow grass, a.k.a. draba verna. The USDA site says this isnÂt a native plant, but wikipedia says "It was once thought to have been introduced to America from Europe, but is now considered native to both continents." I was wondering if anyone here knows anything further about wikipediaÂs claim? Thanks. . .

I am always skeptical of what is in wikipedia, especially when a claim like that is not followed by a citation. For all we know the only person claiming it to be native to both continents is the person who wrote the wikipedia entry. My best sources state that Draba verna was introduced from Eurasia. It probably has been here for a long time, as Aldo Leopold included a short section in his Sand County Almanac titled "Draba".

I must not have been very clear. Buffalo grass is a native grass in my area. It is mixed in with other grasses in pastures and prairie throughout the natural landscape. As our lot currently stands, the weeds (mostly tumbleweeds) have taken over any good prairie grass that is there. We are not planting the 3 acres to lawn, we are planting buffalo grass, which is something we can keep maintained, is native and does not need watered. We are planting over 150 trees and shrubs and plan on introducing a variety of planting beds throughout the property with native wildflowers and ornamental grasses. I feel like we are improving our landscape in a very responsible way and am simply asking for help doing this correctly. Our lot is across from a golf course and although it is in the country (our lot backs a pasture for grazing cattle and circle of corn) it does have to have the look of a manicured area. I frankly feel that people in this area are very good at removing invasive, although "native" weeds that cause a nuisance not only in the way the look but in the amount of water they suck from the ground, and therefore taking over the native grasses. People here plant buffalo grass, keep it mowed and don't water it, which is what we would like to do. Thank you all for your help.

i get this too, and in fact, any place where the ground is bare, they come in droves. the worst time for me is the spring, though, i noticed this weekend it has infested the border of my vinca minor. this year i was planning on trying to use some pre-emergent...hit it a few times. i am particularly worried about this as i am in the middle of putting in a ground cover of liriope -- but i will use wood mulch to help the ground retain moisture until the liriope takes over.

You might see if there are any wholesalers who can supply smaller tubes of the Purple fountain for landscapers - even if you ask a landscaper to buy them in - if you can get cheaper pots and sacrifice some plunes by giving a good haircut, you could try dividing the clumps & could probably produce 4 times the number for planting out. In terms of native grasses, I don;t know your area, I know I find a lot of roadside grasses in my area very pleasant even though some may be weeds. Do be careful though when I say "weeds" some species can be very invasive - Qld now has a problem with the other fountain grass. I found this site which can supply small trial quantities of seed and has some good sections of notes on grasses and their uses (no commercial interest) Here is a link that might be useful: native grass seed supplier

I would also suggest asking in the Lawn Care and Landscape Designer fora if anyone near you geographically has tried it. Some of the native grasses can be tricky, I hear. (That doesn't mean you shouldn't try it, but based on what you hear, you might want to start with a small patch.) Btw, whereabouts are you located? And maybe you can find some to visit in person.

The Wikipedia article may be referring to it as Native, since the State of California considers it a Native plant (Jepson Manual). Everyone else seems to follow the John Kartesz (USDA) line and declares it an Introduced species. Guess the only way it will ever be settled for sure, it to find a fossilized specimen in the Americas from the pre-Columbian Period (10000 BC-1500AD) or earlier.

I do want to say that is a darling photograph, by the way! That tiny plant blooming in a spoon is just precious.

Alas, I should have realized how quickly a spoonful of dirt dries out. I think I have killed my tiny plant.
