Neat stuff Joan. Definitely a hang out for a big bird in the background.

The link below shows the kind we grow around here. (Hope the link works.)

Joan,

Looks like a great place for birding. (bird watching). Are you sure thats a osprey? Looks like a Bald Eagle to me.

Molie: I would suggest a Great Blue Heron, perhaps a juvenile, for the darker bird. These are photos I took in August of a rather mangy looking Great Blue Heron preening in Ellisville Marsh. The dark crown is visible. Check out All About Birds - scroll down to the Field Marks section and then click on the arrow to see more photos. About five photos in is a juvenile. Claire Edit note: One thing that bothers me about the Black-crowned Night-Heron ID is the fact that they mostly hang around at night. According to All About Birds: "Black-crowned Night-Herons are common in wetlands across North America - you just may have to look a little harder than you do for most herons. True to their name, these birds do most of their feeding at night and spend much of the day hunched among leaves and branches at the water’s edge. Evening and dusk are good times to look for these rather stout, short-necked herons flying out to foraging grounds." This post was edited by claire on Thu, Sep 18, 14 at 15:06

John - - - >In the PNW, spring, summer, and fall are the main >gardening seasons, but winter isn't shabby either. Summer gardening in the Northwest??? The only thing summer is good for is hiding inside with air conditioning and a cold drink. In the last few weeks, I've been busy planting Highbush Cranberry, Oregon Grape, Yellow-eyed grass, Evergreen huckleberry, Oceanspray, Douglas Meadowfoam, and Currants. I'd much rather plant stuff in the rain than on a warm day. In another thread, Trudi said: "As long as the ground isn't frozen and I can muck around in it I will. It makes up for summer here when fifteen minutes outside in 90+ degrees instantly wilts me." Ditto here. Only make that 75+ degrees. Maybe I should move further north. :) -Carla

Ospreys have very distinct wing shape and tail/wing pattern that are still evident in these photos.

Angie, it's really neat living near the Mississippi river...we get to see all sorts of amazing sights. Eagles are such a gorgeous bird...we are truly blessed to see them frequently, even flying over our house (would that be considered a backyard bird then? LOL) Once I got photos of a bird way up high in the sky...I thought it was an eagle but when put on the computer and edited, it turned out to be an osprey...that was a thrill!!!

Eric, we thought it looked like an eagle at first, but then decided it was an osprey. I wouldn't place any bets on being right, though.
Is that the osprey helicopter?

Yeah, that's our home grown Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. They get a little touchy about refering to it a merely a helicopter. ;)

How about a whirle bird?

Joan,
I'm pretty certain you captured an eagle in your picture, not an osprey. Merritt Island has lots of eagles. I drove through there just a couple weeks ago - something I try to do 3 or 4 times a year - and saw several eagles. Also captured this guy:

Aren't there 2 birds in the pic? One looks more like an eagle. The other could be an osprey?

On the left of the eagle/osprey (He sure looks like an eagle in the photo) is a gull. Everytime the other bird dropped something, the gull was right on it.
Kate, we went to Merritt Island WR 3 times this winter, we just LOVE it!

Joan,
That is definately a Bald Eagle. An Osprey doesn't look anything like that.
