Joan,

Looks like a great place for birding. (bird watching). Are you sure thats a osprey? Looks like a Bald Eagle to me.

OK, Jean, I think it's time you 'fess up and tell us just WHICH ornithilogical publication you do professional photography for... Your photos ALWAYS look like they came right out of a book, or should be in one! I'm humbled by your skill and aspire to attain anything close to it with my own bird pictures! As for the Carolina wren, I got a picture of one just outside my dining room window a couple years ago, perched on one of those cage feeders... picture's through a dirty window, but it's an otherwise pretty clear picture of a wren and I think I posted it here before at one point, so let me go see if it's in my Photobucket... Well, I THOUGHT it was, but maybe I deleted it. It's late, and I'm not gonna hunt it down right now, but maybe you'll figure out if that was a Carolina wren or not by looking at online sources, FTM. Yep, three eggs now. The site said the third egg was first observed on the 30th so it would seem they don't lay their eggs all at once. I was wondering how long before we see chicks too, so I looked it up & it takes 5-6 weeks of incubation before the eggs hatch. If the first egg arrived around the 23rd of April (according to the Wood's Hole site), we should start looking around May 27th. The eggs will hatch in the order in which they were laid. Dad's helping out too. I think I saw him bring a peice of food back, but it was unidentifiable. I've also seen them switch off for sitting on the eggs. They had a peice of paper that they were using as a blanket for awhile. They would place it over the eggs while stretching their legs and then tuck it around their breast while sitting. Thank you so much! Spring migration keeps me so busy taking more photos, I've been getting far behind. Every time we stop by the Minor Clark Fish Hatchery we see something different 4-25-10, Minor Clark Fish Hatchery, Solitary Sandpiper From April 23, 2010 birds plus we spent the weekend camping and birding at the Kentucky Ornithological Society's spring meet at Jenny Wiley State Park, so tons MORE photos to sort, edit

Cathy. . .well, the best time to come to the northern California coast would be ***right now***, but plan for just about *any* weather. Currently, we're in the middle of a heatwave. That's due to change come Thursday. Some mild showers are expected for Friday and Saturday. . .for the **best** in terms of the warmest weather? Believe it or not, typically, *October* is warmest. :) EVERYONE: thank you for your kind comments and posts. Eric, we thought it looked like an eagle at first, but then decided it was an osprey. I wouldn't place any bets on being right, though.
Is that the osprey helicopter?

Yeah, that's our home grown Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. They get a little touchy about refering to it a merely a helicopter. ;)

I'm pretty certain you captured an eagle in your picture, not an osprey. Merritt Island has lots of eagles. I drove through there just a couple weeks ago - something I try to do 3 or 4 times a year - and saw several eagles. Also captured this guy:

Aren't there 2 birds in the pic? One looks more like an eagle. The other could be an osprey?

On the left of the eagle/osprey (He sure looks like an eagle in the photo) is a gull. Everytime the other bird dropped something, the gull was right on it.
Kate, we went to Merritt Island WR 3 times this winter, we just LOVE it!

That is definately a Bald Eagle. An Osprey doesn't look anything like that.
