I looked and couldn't find a waterfowl forum so I thought I'd post these here.

While birdwatching we saw these beauties on the Mississippi River, Quad Cities, Illinois...

i think it's mostly that we are backyard birdwatchers and just don't get to see waterfowl in the yard. and only get to go to a lake or resevoir a few times a year in the summer for a picnic or fishing. i enjoy seeing any pictures of any kind of birds. but most of what i get to see are from the window or a walk around the neighborhood.

Nice photos! I live on the SE MA coast and sometimes see Bald Eagles but always in the air; I've never seen one actually standing on the beach. I wouldn't have thought the gulls would stick around with raptors nearby. Do the eagles concentrate on fish? One of the few times I saw a juvenile Bald Eagle here it was chasing a bird.

I hope the BST is okay too, but I doubt it since we've had freezing temps since I released it. I just wish it had waited until spring. I've not been feeling well lately and just didn't feel like rigging up something for it to stay in the house for several days until it hopefully got warmer. Even so, we have cats and they'd have been after it. It's out there either alive or dead and I think I'd rather not know. I just hope that most of yours and mine (and those of whoever else has BST chrysalids) will wait until spring to eclose. I couldn't really enjoy it's eclosure too much knowing that it hasn't been very warm here lately. I'm looking forward to next year and expecting more BST cats and hopefully earlier than they were this year. I'm anxious to see if I will see any new butterfly species next year. Hi Lrae, I am so worried. My dirt is expletive deleted and it has taken R.J. like almost an hour (I think) to dig each hole. Then I have to mix the good dirt with the best I can find of my sandy stuff, mix in the black cow and make the little mound. It's been at least an hour or more on each plant. This week we've had fires all over our area and and his father have been busy. One day the air quality was not good enough, one day he had finals and a retirment party. So today was the first day since Saturday morning that we could plant. We got about four in the ground. I have two more in the back to plant and ten in the front! I am so worried about my daylily puppies. We were planting in the dark (could not start til seven pm tonight. He was so exhausted he had to stop. I am so worried that I am planting wrong. The holes do not look completely even with the bed, but I guess we can work on that. Because of magnolia roots, there are places that I would have liked to plant to make a nice design that we have not been able to. He's been digging out big pieces of concrete (??) and weird hard white soil that is like rocks. Now we have big piles of dirt that has to go in the woods and the bed looks disgusting. waaaaa. Sorry to be a whiner. does anyone else have such problems. I have been told daylilies do not like ANY roots around. I am afraid even in the front yard bed there will be roots from the ligustrum tree, and juniper but we're digging out as best as we can. I need encouragement. I also thought we could plant all the fans in back, so took two out prematurely from their littel mound. I had to remake the temporary mounds and water them. Although I was told not to water more than once a week, I think, when I took them off their mounds it was bone day. I guess due to our windy conditions late last week and during the weekends. You may have read about our Palm Bay and Malabar, Florida fires. Thanks for listening. Lin

Thanks, I am excited about how it looks since I was so nervous it would be too much that I almost had them install it as an accent behind the bar area which meant it would have to be made into a long pattern. I really wanted my island slab in Before I decided about putting it behind my cooktop. 'twas not to be with the crazy timing of my workers; so I took a deep breath and said ,"go for it"! I'm now basically wiped out with all the decisions. I am really on my own with all of these decisions since my DH has abdicated any responsibility ( except for the all important money aspect). He gave me a good budget if it only covered the kitchen but somehow it needs to cover a face lift of most of the house, including ALL of the flooring. I hired a KD for 5 hours as a sounding board for my vision of my kitchen. she gave me a few sketches with no dimensions. Beyond that, she's been available by text.... Hoping we'll be finished with the kitchen next week. My DH has been awesome and uncomplaining throughout. I guess I am one lucky girl. It's been sort of a dream to finally try out all of these ideas floating around in my head for the past 12 years in a kitchen I never liked. Hope it turns out . A fun adventure that I am so enjoying sharing and learning from all the GWers here. Thanks! . Heres Another shot. The mullions above will have antiqued mirrors.... No wonder I have been afraid to post photos. There's a lot of "clowns in my kitchen" And i hate clowns! But I love beautiful things that appeal to my eye.

Oh, I adore that last picture ginni!!! The Eagles are amazing!!! I would die on the spot if i saw such a sight in person! I actually enjoy seeing the waterfowl pics. I don't often get next to a large body of water to view them, and they are as interesting to me as my yard birds are.~~Angie

Your 'Golden-eyes' are actually Scaup; I'd say Lesser based on the head shape, though I'm not positive about that part of the ID.

Angie, it's really neat living near the Mississippi river...we get to see all sorts of amazing sights. Eagles are such a gorgeous bird...we are truly blessed to see them frequently, even flying over our house (would that be considered a backyard bird then? LOL) Once I got photos of a bird way up high in the sky...I thought it was an eagle but when put on the computer and edited, it turned out to be an osprey...that was a thrill!!!

ginni, those are so neat! In summer, we fish several times a week. The lake where we go has many osprey. One time my husband says, "there's a real pretty osprey" and I thought "oh, why not, take a picture," even though I had tons of osprey pics already. When I looked at it, it turned out to be a bald eagle! Very rare for our lake! You are so lucky to have seen the eagles.

I dug around and found that osprey photo...It's not the best because it was so high up and was just a speck in the middle of the photo until I cropped it down a lot... so there's a lot of fuzz.
