update on jasdip's mom!!!!!

She asked me to post here. I'm just going to copy/paste the emails.

We're here at the hospital.

Mom had left the CCT last weekend and was on the 9th floor on the surgical floor.

We saw her Saturday and Sunday and she was doing great.

Today she started hemorraghing again. They took her to the CCT unit, and now she's in Radiology. They're trying to determine where the bleeding is originating from so they can stop it. They did a cat scan and her abscess/mass is surrounded by blood.

Her stent also has blood all around it.

Her small intestine, which should be "so" big around is much larger. The walls have been eaten away. They don't know if the bleeding is coming from the abscess, her arteries, the stent or what.

The dr said on Saturday that he's 75% certain she has cancer and it's eating/affecting her organs.

The top priority is finding and stopping the source of the bleeding. They have already put 4 units of blood in, her BP dropped and her Heart rate is elevated, but that's okay.

Her hemoglobin is low as well.

So here we are, praying that she comes out all right.

Little while later, I got this email! They sure need our thoughts and Prayers!!!

We just spoke with the doctor. He was able to put a stent in to stop the bleeding.

The bleeding was catastrophic and massive.......worse than on Nov.9 when she was flown here.

She was recovering....she didn't have surgery, she was awake, and they just used a fine needle, etc to fix it. They were getting ready to move her when she became unresponsive.

He thinks she had a stroke......either minor or massive they don't know yet.

She's in CT scanning her brain. Even if the scan looks good, it could take 48 hours before she shows sign of a massive stroke. She's in serious, serious condition.

He said "If she survives, it'll be miraculous."

Oh my gosh--I'm sitting here reading your post with my heart in my throat. My aunt was in an assisted living facility for the past 2 years (until she died 2 weeks ago). The charge was 'only' $4500/month (EXTREMELY reasonable for that sort of care). Even though it was only assisted living, she was so well cared for. She was incontinent toward the end--and the staff was always on top of keeping her clean. She had a number of medical issues--the staff took excellant care of her medical needs and always kept me informed. She was ALWAYS kept clean, her clothes laundered, even her own furniture was cleaned by the staff when needed. I daily think how lucky we were to find such a good, caring, reasonably priced facility for Aunt to spend her last days. And while I visited frequently, and the staff knew me well, NOT ONCE was I EVER asked to perform personal or other medical care for my aunt--that's the responsibility of those who are trained to do so safely. Your mom cannot speak for herself these days--she's in too much discomfort, feeling too week, and I can understand her wish to not make waves. BUT you and your stepfather are absolutely right to take on this fight for your mom. I know your health system is drastically different from ours, but you may want to start researching what agency regulates the health system--you've had so much trouble getting decent care for your mom over the past months, I really think you do need to consider the possibility of making a formal complaint at some point in the future. I know right now, you're working day-to-day, but someone needs to step up and demand that these facilities are made to account for the lack of appropriate care your mother has received. Will continue to keep your family in my thoughts. Hang in there--this sort of thing does teach us how to be strong--stronger than we ever thought we could be, right? You'll do fine.

Hi Erin, I don't mind you asking at all!! She's kind of at a plateau. They're taking another ultra-sound of her lungs on Monday....she has liquids in her chest and they want to make sure they aren't between her chest cavity and wall. If it is they might have to insert tubes to drain the fluids. She's got so many tubes and drains and ostomy bag, she looks like a pincushion the poor thing! This is a woman who's never had a problem with her kidneys, bladder, heart, small intestine, diaphragm.....now they're all at risk. Obviously spending the past 7 months in the hospital has taken its toll. When one organ has problems, it's a chain-reaction. She still has the ventilator in, and her diaphragm is so weak she finding it hard to breathe for long periods on her own. They're having another consult with the team of doctors on Monday......there's a very real probability they will do a trach on her. Apparently they look worse than they are. It will actually be better for her. It'll be easy to just disconnect the oxygen so she can breathe on her own, and get her lungs and diaphragm working for short periods of time, then it's easily hooked up again. Now with the breathing tube, it's down her throat into her lungs and has to be removed and re-inserted......not able to be done frequently. Step-father was up to the surgical floor yesterday and met some of the nurses who looked after her prior to her going into the CCT.......and they said they miss her. She's a terrific woman they said. (One brought her the first rose out of her garden and the man pushed her bed to the window so she could see a marvelous sunset, a few weeks ago). So she is well thought of. This is definitely taking its toll on her, and she's showing signs of despair which she had never displayed before. You're right Erin, the emotions are definitely a yo-yo. We go from great happiness seeing the positive strides she was making to horror and fear when she has such severe set-backs. Thanks again, I'll keep you posted.

I just got home 1/2 hour ago from seeing Mom. The last time I wrote, she had recovered from being in CCT, and in very critical shape, on life support. She's been back on the surgical floor, and is on a regular diet of food. She hasn't eaten for so long, her stomach is probably the size of a walnut, a few mouthfuls and she's full. I took her in a Smoothie last Sunday and she loved it! She's also had watermelon and cantaloupe and loves that as well. Once again, they figure she's in good enough shape that they want her to come to our local hospital. They frankly need the beds, and unless she's having surgery, there isn't much more they can do for her there. In one sense they're right, for sure, but the care she is getting is beyond wonderful. Remember the little fellow who pushed her bed to the window to watch the sunset? Well he's popping in all the time to see how she is, and just to talk to her. She's been there so long, they just pop in to visit. We laughed......one girl went in and said she would "ask the book of knowledge; she would know." So she asked mom if "Don" was working today. Mom said, Yes, he was off yesterday, so he'll be in today. Sure enough, when the shift started, there was "Don". The girl who asked, said that she Knew Mom would know. LOL Anyway, she's improving (except today was a bad day). So every day is not like the next; there are still hills and valleys. Even when she comes to our hospital, her Dr. where she is now, is the one calling the shots, and she'll be sent back, if something were to go wrong again. He's made that perfectly clear, and reiterated that today when he came in. Just the matter of waiting on a bed. Oh, my step-father was there today as well, and the two of them gave me my birthday gift early. ( a new laptop, cause mine is on it's last legs). I cried.

This is such sad news. She seemed to be doing so well. My heart goes out to Jas and her family. I'm saying prayers for all of you.
