Mom's Update

I haven't posted in a couple weeks.

Last time, I mentioned that Mom was in the CCT and recovering; her kidneys and diaphragm kicked in and are working.

She's been out of CCT into a regular surgical room for a week now. They still have the trach in, but she can talk and drink, and eat fluids.

So she just finished breakfast; cream of wheat, some coffee and juice. The only lunch and dinner she gets are soup, which she has a problem with because she doesn't like soup. I keep telling her she has to eat some of everything, in order to prevent the feeding tube from going back in. She said she certainly doesn't want that again.

I'm going to get her a milk-shake when we see her. Mind you one, is too much for her, she eats so little nowadays, but it'll sure taste good.

So she's on the upward mend again, we just have to keep these set-backs from happening, and she can be on a permanent mend. All the while knowing she does have a slow-growing cancer. If she can actually get well enough to come home sometime; hopefully this year yet, that would be the greatest gift. The cancer will be part of her, but I'd love to have her for a few more years yet.

It's hard when your parents get old. I hope her eyes heal real fast, and you get your FMLA, and are allowed to switch your days of work. It seems reasonable to me. Leslie

Doodle, that's great! It's nice to hear your excitement in her progress. I'm think an hour or two supervised now is a good start, but as she makes more progress that should be rewarded with a little more time and trust. That will likely just go to encourage her more. Here's to hope!

Enjoy the peace while you can! She is probably embarassed and heartbroken. She is probably one of those people who walk around forgetting their wrongs and all she can think about is how "her" babies are calling you mama. Forget the fact that she has been in and out of their lives! GRRR...she reminds me of my skids bm. So on another note how is your pregnancy going? When are you due? Do you know yet if your having a boy or girl?

Was looking to see if there was an update and hoping things are going better today. As I scanned recent replies and thought about you saying she was off Oxy, something else occurred to me. Absolutely continue to press on your concerns (and I would make sure they are looking for any signs of a brain bleed or any other continued internal bleeding), but consider that her body may be responding to pain an injury. If the pain is too great, her body may be muffling all kinds of stimulation or tuning out to a certain degree as a coping mechanism. If everything else is checking out okay, it's something to think about. Being a bit druggy or having some side effects might be worth it if that seems like a possibility. I've not has as serious an injury as your mom's, but I've had a couple of very painful ones and have a chronic (nearly 30 year) source of pain I've had to learn to manage. Part of getting a handle on it was understanding that my body was responding to an injury where there were not nerve endings to signal pain. Learning that systemic reaction help start explaining and unlocking things for me. Whatever helps, I just hope your mom is on the mend.

Ahhhhh, love to hear when your mom is on the upswing! Do they know why she has taken downswings in the past? They seem to come on so suddenly. Enjoy your visit with her, Sherry, and give that great gal a hug from me.

This is great news,girl! My Prayer now is that she continue to get getter and better and that she WILL get to go home...and be there for a LONG time!! Ya'll have some catching up to do!

Glad to read your post. Your mom is so amazing! When we don't get an update once in a while, I know (or hope) she's doing okay. Since she's out of intensive care, maybe you could wheel her outside again if you have another beautiful day. Always in my prayers.

Hi Jasdip - thanks for the update. You and your mom are on my mind.

When my Dad was in the hospital they had something called Nepro (I think). It was a nutritious "shake-like" drink in a can and came in a few flavors such as vanilla, coffee, etc. He really liked it, especially when he could get little else down. Do they have anything like that that might be palatable for your Mom?

Thanks for the update...and the positive news! (One of the canned drinks for people who need to gain is 'Ensure'. I'm sure your mom's MD has something like that in mind -- maybe not appropriate for her digestive tract just now.)
