Another Mom Update

For those who asked that I keep the KT updated, here's the latest.

Brought Mom home from the hospital last Wednesday night late. Finally got into bed around 10:30.

Thursday was a follow up appt. at the eye specialst and she could see 2 fingers in front of her and some numbers in large print close up. The pressure was a 12. The doctors seemed pleased.

Flash forward to Friday afternoon when I went into the office after finding a babysitter (or 2) and talked with my boss and HR. They are very accommodating. I'll be taking off 4 days a week FMLA to care for Mom. She needs 24/7 care for this recovery period. I'm hoping only 2-3 weeks. My brother will take off Fridays and take care of her then and possibly Saturdays too. That way I can get 1-2 days of pay depending on if they approve me substituting a normal work day for a Saturday. I might be able to stay in touch with what's going on at work this way too.

Staying pretty close to home this past weekend and today. Had a minor meltdown yesterday after she decided to "rub her eye because something was in it".... Arrgh. It's called about a dozen nylon stitches!!!! Her NPH is really affecting her memory so she doesn't recall from one moment to the next that she needs to keep her hands away from her eye at all times.

We're being lazy today, I've done dishes and might tackle some taxes.

Thank you again for your thoughts and prayers. I've saved them all on my cell phone to reread when I need a lift.

Thanks for the update, Jasdip. Again, your mom seems to be one strong woman to have survived all of this at her age--most would not. That speaks well to a good recovery, though I know it will take a long time. I'm very relieved they were able to transfer her to a better hospital where her care is much improved! When you visit, do you chat with (to) her and read to her? That might be soothing for the both of you. I say a prayer for her, you and Wally every day. Hang in there. Erin

Social work is actually a good piece of advice.... Although they can't give you information protected by Hippa, they can direct you in the legal documents that you and your mother can sign to make it ok for you to get information. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but calling the Hospital Admin- no matter how demanding, angry, persistent, etc that you are- will get you the same result. As a nurse, I can tell you, HIPPA is something that is pounded into our heads on a daily basis. Trust me, sometimes it would be easier to give family the information so they aren't continually calling to harrass us for what we aren't allowed to give. This goes for Hospital Administration, as well. Social work is your best bet. Nurses can't give information that the doctor read and charted because if by some chance we give the information back incorrectly, we open ourselves up for lawsuit and the hospital for a lawsuit. This is also a rule- at least everywhere I have ever worked. Sorry but their are rules that need to be followed. Our society has made it hard because of the fear of lawsuits.

Lois, my mom left a huge stack of granny squares! I assembled them into about a dozen lap robes and gave them to the local nursing home. That’s what mom did with the ones she completed. The nursing home staff was thrilled! Donna

It's hard when your parents get old. I hope her eyes heal real fast, and you get your FMLA, and are allowed to switch your days of work. It seems reasonable to me.

You are an Angel! Good luck with your Mom. My husband went crazy when he had two cataract operations last year, he said the stitches itched so bad.
