I don't understand why she has two crates- one for sleeping and one for going potty. That alone can be confusing. At almost a year old she should be able to make it through the night without having to go out.

I would eliminate using the two crates- use one for sleeping- if you have to don't put any bedding or a potty pad in there. Wait until she is potty trained better and then add them in. Quit using potty pads- mainly because she is eating them and they are not healthy by any means.

Feed her earlier in the evening if need be and make sure she has a b.m. before you go to bed.
Do not let her roam the house- she has to be more reliable before you let her have free reign.

Does she have a small crate- she shouldn't be able to get in much trouble if she only has enough room to stand up and turn around.

Not one mention of taking your dog out for leash walks - which should be done AT LEAST twce a day for AT LEAST 30 minutes a walk. Your dog is suffering from FISH BOWL syndrome, same place same smells every day every night. Your dog NEEDS to be able to go out and smell other dogs, and cats and mark its place in the world.

Great advice here and I agree with it. Ditch that second crate and the potty pads. Unless there is absolutely no way to avoid it (like you broke your leg and live at the top of a highrise), we just shouldn't teach any puppy that it's okay to potty in the house. From now on, no potty in the house at all. Ever.

Basically, you can't take your eyes off her for at the very least the next six weeks -- and you must keep a close ewatch on her for the next six months after that. Every time she has an accident in the house, add one week to the time you have to watch her every second.

Please go outside with her every single time and praise and treat her for doing her potty. It works even better if you use a clicker (much personal experience both ways).

When she is in the house have her right with you all the time. Shut doors, use baby gates, tie her to your waist, tie her to a table leg -- do whatever you have to do to keep her with you. If you can't watch her for a few minutes, like when you're in the shower, either put her outside or put her in her crate with a stuffed Kong or other fun chew toy.

All of my puppies -- of every breed -- have been able to hold it for 8 hours overnight at 8 weeks old.

There is only one sure way to housebreak any and every dog, and that is to make sure they never have a chance to go potty in the house. That means they're watched at all times until you know they're reliable. She must be in the same room as you all the time, and more than that, you have to be watching her. When you're sure she's reliable (at least six weeks with no accident) you give her a wee bit more freedom. If she can handle that, you increase a wee bit more freedom and so on.

Sorry, it's that way for all of us, a pain in the neck. There are no shortcuts. If you do this right, she'll become very reliable. If you don't, she won't.

Yorkies are supposedly very hard to housetrain. I have a relative that has a yorkie and remember one time we met at another relatives house and the dog was repeatedly having accidents on the bed!

Anyway, as much as I hate to say it it sounds like you've encouraged going potty in the house with this potty pad system. Instead, reinforcing that we potty where it smells like grass would have been a good idea. It's going to be tough but not impossible so start fresh with consistent housetraining and pottying outside, praise and reward for doing it outside and do those walks, that takes time out of your life but all dogs need walks.
I would keep him/her crated in one small crate until reliable unless supervised to make sure he/she doesn't sneak off and go somewhere in the house (Which is why smaller dogs like that can be hard to house train)

Your experience with potty pads are one (of many) I don't recommend them.

Why you might ask??? Because you are trying to alter the way a dog does things naturally, and has been doing it for thousands of years. Dogs really need exercise at least twice a day to get things moving.

Using two crates is a HUGE mistake, your dog is confused. Crates should ONLY be used for keeping untrusted dogs safe while you are away, or for OTHER training purposes only, such as CORRECT house training, chewing and teething issues.

You have a real problem on your hands that will only get worse unless you decide you want to correctly train your dog.

My co worker was telling me their beagle is completely puppy pad trained. His wife is a resident and works long hours right now so the dog is home alone. He tells me that the dog is simply content to use his puppy pad as a toilet (they put it inside a large cat litter box). He does his business when he is indoors and when he goes out makes the switch without problem. The dog is exercised regularly, but their hours at home are not regular enough right now to have a set schedule. I've never ever heard of a dog basically being litter box trained before. I believe the dog is at least two years old. He is not crated at all. Since they live in a condo the option of a doggy door doesn't exist.
