Stop stool eating with For-Bid, just sprinkle on pet's food to make stool highly unpalatable so that your pet will avoid eating them. Vegetable protein and sodium glutamate work in the digestive system to give stool a bad taste. For dogs, cats, and horses.
I got this off Drs. foster and Smiths website. I don't know how well it works. My dog will eat rabbit poo. Gross!

I have read that supplements such as those rec'd by dirthappy work for some dogs. Not for ours, or others I know who are determined poo-eaters. For my dog it seems to be a delicacy (ick!). She's always done it, even the first time we ever saw her poo as a puppy. I think in her case it started out as "den cleaning" at the breeders and she never could break the habit. I even tried putting a very small dab of tabasco on her poo when she wasn't looking. She liked it all the more. I don't recommend that method - - she had the worst gas afterward so it was just punishment for the rest of us.

The only thing that works for my dog is to leash-walk her and clean up after her. If she goes in the yard unsupervised, we have a "don't ask don't tell" arrangement with her! :-)

Before you go out and purchase anything, what are you feeding your dog?? I suspect if you add some canned dog food to your dogs diet it might help. Also are you walking your dog or is it just left ot its own devises in the back yard? If you are waking your dog, teach your dog "leave it" you can take with you a small travel tube of toothpaste and immediately tell your dog to drop it and then put it on your dogs tongue. NOTE - Some dogs like the taste and in that case use a small bottle of tobasco sauce. Your dog should not be picking up anything you dont okay. Let me know what happens and we will see if we can get this worked out.

Thanks for the replys. I leave her out in the backyard. She is a 7 yr old Dobbie. I haven't been able to walk her.....I'm having back problems and she is strong and pulls me. I did google it and there are few reasons for this behavior......bordom being one. She gets hard food for breakfast and a combination of hard and soft for dinner. I'll have to try For-Bid and see if that works. Thanks.

Neither of our dogs will eat their own poo, but casey will eat the cats poo if given the chance and foxy will eat casey's poo and the cats poo, but no other dog's poo, it's gross but funny.

Certain breeds have a tendency to do this, but I don't know if Dobes are one of them.

My toy fox terrier does it and she eats a prepared mix for dogs of grains, nuts, and herbs with raw veggies and various meats I add, so I don't think her diet has anything to do with it.

The Forbid didn't slow her down one bit, either. The only thing that stops her is leash walking and cleaning it up immediately.

Goldens are known for this, although obviously they don't all do it. Two of my six do - and they happen to be grandmother and granddaugher. We know many of the dogs in the line, and joke about being on the 6th generation of pooh-pooh eaters.

My 10 year old (from a different line) has never touched it in her life. My male, who is a grandson in the above group, never did until he took a short course of steriods for an allergic reaction. He became insanely hungry, and suddenly started showing an interest that now comes and goes.

My two puppies (littermates) are related to the older ones, but not as closely. And they've never shown an interest.

Many times it starts for one reason or another and becomes habit. By that time, it's almost impossible to stop. I know some folks who have had luck with the various products - I've also heard of adding tomato juice to food, and even rabbit pellets - but most of the time the improvement is temporary. And I know pooh-pooh eaters who are fed premium kibble, cheap kibble, home-cooked food, raw food, etc. So I don't believe the notion that it's caused by something lacking the diet.

So I live with poop scoop in hand and am obsessive about picking up. Probably not a bad thing ;)

And my guys have it down to an art form. When I let them out, one will run to one corner of our large fenced yard, and one to the other. They know that it's almost impossible for us to make it across before they can eat it.

My neighbors used to crack up at us racing around yelling, "Don't you dare!" while waving the poop scoop in the air.

If you can still find Adolf's meat tenderizer and sprinkle it on her food it often helps eliminate the problem.

I used Adolph's meat tenderizer (just a few sprinkles on food) and it worked.

I know there are other reasons for this, but I think my dog used to do it just to annoy me......as she did other things that I forgave,,,,,,,,,,

I have this problem with my youngest lab. He and the middle child are confined to the backyard.

The youngest will literally eat the poo as soon as the middle dog goes, if not sooner - I know totally gross and I like the above poster am out there screaming like a fishwife at him. It doesn't matter.

The vet recommended the meat tenderizer on the dog whose poo is being eaten. I don't like all that sodium to be in his food, and why am I punishing the non-offender? Another option was a basket muzzle for when the youngest guy is outside. I don't know about you all, but to attach that every single time he goes out to the yard is an ordeal, at least for me.

My dogs eat Nutro and get enough food, probably a little too much at times. They also get treats.

Funny thing is, middle dog used to eat old gal's poo when they were both pottying together. That stopped because my younger two males are confined to the backyard together.

Old gal is the only one who is allowed to go out in the front of our house. She doesn't go away, and loves to lay on the cool steps on a sunny day. Also, she can't do the steps on our back deck so the front is the only option for her.

It is so frustrating and I like the don't ask - don't tell post, only thing is, when the young guy comes in and wants to get close and give you a kiss - YUK ;).

Just have to clean up more often, at least 2 times per day. I found it very difficult this past fall with all of the leaves on the ground, so young guy got a lot of "hot off the press" treats.

BTW - boys are half brothers. They have the same mother.

labmomma, I agree about the sodium, I wouldn't want to sprinkle it on the food long term. When I had the problem with one of my 2 dogs I sprinkled it on both of the dogs food for less than a week and the problem was solved. Apparently it makes the excrement taste bad.

These have given me a chuckle! I don't have any dogs that like other dog poo, but 4 out of 5 will eat cat poo! Ugh. My vet told me when the first one snacked in the cat box years ago that there was nothing wrong with him, he just liked the taste of it.

Not only does the cat poo gross me out when I catch them, but seeing the litter on it - sure doesn't seem like that could be good for them. One of the reasons I like my automatic cat litterbox - the exposed poo isn't there too long before its swept away.

I will try the For-Bid on my cats' food and see if it helps.

All of mine feast from the cat box if they can get at it while I am at work. It is a dead give away when you see the pieces of litter stuck around the jaw and under their noses;).

Old girl eats it in our yard only if it's made of dry commercial food; she also savours cat poo, that seems very common. Breath isn't sweet then! She leaves the bony/ home made ones alone.

Your dog will more than likely start to exhibit some other negative behaviors as long as it is unable to go out for walking. I suggest you contact a neighbor or a friend or even contact a dogwalker to take your dog out at least once a day for a 45 minute walk. Your dog will benefit greatly as a result and you may be able to ward off any unwanted behavior which result for being in the same backyard all the time. God luck

Toby has always enjoyed occasional poo eating. When it gets to be frequent, we get tablets like Forbid. He and Casey like the tablets, so they get them as treats.

Megan only ate poop when she cleaned up spilled birdseed and had it show up in her poop the next day. She diceided to give it another go at digestion, I guess!

Casey rolled in poop a few weeks ago. It was after they boys had gotten pigs ears as a treat for the first time. I figured that there was enough undigested pig ear remanants in the poop that he was filled with joy to find it and decided to roll in it! We have had him five years and the only other time I have found him all poopy was when I met him. He is usually as clean as a cat.

This is all very gross, but my dog eats pooh, too. She'd eat horse's, rabbit's, bird's or any other animal's pooh. Ohh, but she doesn't eats her own pooh. :)

Wow! This site was very helpful! I'm relieved to know that there are others out there who understand this yucky habit! I have a maltese who loves to feast on her pooh and I had a maltese before who loved doing the same thing! The vet said that it was lack of enzyme and by giving her enzyme tablets it would defeat the bad habit. Haven't tried it yet but these other suggestion sound good too! Thanks! Only us owners of poop-eaters understand the frustration of this habit!!

My dog, a Jack Russell Terrier, was doing the same thing and we tried the Adolf's Meat Tenderizer and she wouldn't eat the food, and also tried other store bought pills and they would work for a couple of months then she would start eating it again. I changed her food to Iams and started feeding her baby carrots everyday, on the request of my vet. This seemed to start working for a bit, she loves the carrots, and they work nice to keep her teeth clean. I did some research and found that adding canned pumpkin and sweet potatoes (can use fresh also) is supposed to make the poop taste bad to them. I asked the vet and he agreed, so we have been doing this for about 3 weeks now and she has stopped eating her poop. She is litter trained, because she is scared of outside and people. Shortly after I got her from a rescue place I found out she was a puppy mill dog. In the mills the dogs keep their young clean as well as their cage. This is something she has been doing her whole life (she just turned 5 in February). It's a hard habit to break and takes work to do so. She now gets her Iams dog food for small dogs, about a cup of baby carrots a day, as well as about 2 tablespoons of pumpkin, sweet potatoes, squash or carrots a day mixed with a little applesauce. This is working great and she seems to be healthier and happier to be getting her "treats" everyday.

i enjoyed reading these! sounds like we are all pretty much trying all the same things-except pumpkin and sweet potato lady.but i think i had heard pumpkin was good for dogs anyway so why not? the best thing is truly making it a priority to pick up right away and have the scooper ready-the adolphs is so-so but surely it can't be good to give them all that salt!i hate to say it but denial does kinda work in this instance
