What do you think of this idea?

After hours and hours of agonizing over this decision, I think I have an idea of what I want to do. I have no experience with window treatments so I need your advice. I've always loved the look of bamboo. Could I do a darker bamboo mounted at the ceiling with stationary panels on the outside of the window? My inspiration is beekeeperswife's room with the purple accents. I want to keep the window as open as possible. We don't have privacy issues and I like the light during the day. The rooms are not big.

Soon to be dining room: I had a fabric picked out from Penney's that was subtle with some print.

Living Room. I wanted to do something in the same tone as the walls so not to compete with the view.

The bottom line is this is a good idea. Olpea has some reality checks but I think as a community project it is good. I personally have been working with an antique orchard here in Seattle where the fruit is publicly picked both by passersby and by the ones who take care of the orchard and we use this fruit for our Harvest Festival. I have found that I can even enlist passersby to help sanitize the orchard (throwing away fallen apples) and to put on foot sox in the Spring. However, the fact is that when it comes to "divvying up the booty" at Harvest time it does become somewhat problematic....the "law of the commons" can work...but only to a point. www.pipersorchard.org My suggestion is to ask for volunteer donations from people who do not have to have a certain return in terms of the fruit they hope to get but are more interested in just giving their time and money away with the hopes of making the community better and getting an education. If they happen to get some fruit from it, so much the better. I think it's a great idea when you have the space. Especially since it seems to be a regular kitchen activity for you. I have an upright freezer in my laundry room, steps away from my all-fridge in my kitchen. We, also, eat a lot of fresh produce and the average fridge couldn't accommodate it all well and we had the freezing problem, too. So glad that doesn't happen anymore! I want to put drawers or small fridge in an area that we'd use as our beverage center to keep the rest of the family out of my work area, so I think your plan is stellar!

Let's see what I can remember... I don't think I saw white shaker doors. In addition to the new ash fronts, there's going to be a walnut or walnut-look front (not sure if it's foil or walnut textured laminate) with an integrated handle at the top of drawers and handles on the side of the doors, something like the Godmorgon vanities in the textured oak laminate. They're keeping the high gloss Ringhult white (I think it's their bestseller) but probably the Ringhult grey will be discontinued. As an alternative to the Ringhult, they will introduce a new line of less expensive high-gloss fronts in white, cream and some other colors. Also, the yellow accent doors will be replaced with orange ones.

I've seen this done with rebar and I've done it with 3/8" iron rod. Wire together the top or use a hose clamp to connect the top. IME just spreading them out in a triangle won't anchor them well enough; they need to be pounded down into the soil 6" to a foot, depending on how windy your area is and how big the clematis is. I've wrapped a long wire wrapping up in a spiral around the legs.

Stationary panels and a bamboo blind would look great, IMO.

As for placement, normally the blind is mounted on the window frame, and the rod from which the stationary panels hang is somewhere above that, often as far up as the ceiling. The inside edges of the stationary panels normally cover the window frame and the edges of the blind. There are variations, of course, but you want a visual connection among the three elements - the window, the blind and the panels.

Mounting the blind above the frame would keep more of the window exposed when the blind is open and make the window appear taller. But I don't think you need to mount at the ceiling to accomplish this.

If you mount the blind above the frame, you will probably need to pull the header away from the wall the depth of the frame so that the blind falls smoothly.

beekeeperswife, glad you popped in. So you think I can do that in these rooms? Do you think those blinds would block the glare on the TV? That's the biggest issue in that room. The sun shines in in the evening and puts a glare on the TV.

thanks mommap. I searched and searched for the right green for that room and I really like it. It's Behr Tate Olive.

One other question. If I'm doing bamboo in these two rooms, is it still ok to do cellular shades in the back side of the house? I thought I had to do all the same type of shade, but can't b/c the window in the back of the house is too wide.

Graywings, thank you for your input. I've searched and searched for different looks and try to pick the ones that really pop out to me. Here are some pics that I've saved to compare placement of blind and drapery rod. I just don't want the rod too far from the blind. Especially since the panels will be far apart from one another.

They do cut down on the glare for the TV. They aren't lined, but they do the trick.

I think they would look great in your rooms. I've used them in my LR, the FR, over the slider in the kitchen and also over the kitchen window. And I think I need another one for the room I'm just finishing for dd2.
