I am preg and dog is pooping in house! Help!

Help!!

I am now 7 months pregnant and my adult (7+ yo, mixed breed, ~30 lbs, female) dog has been pooping in the house. Doesn't matter if we are both home or if she had been out in the last 2 hours. We penned her in the kitchen, but once our baby arrives I need axcess to the kitchen. Our vet said it was a reaction to the pregnancy, and to not react. Well my hormones are not allowing me to not react, I admit I do scream at her and it causes an anger in me I haven't seen. I usually just clean it up and then take her outside, with no potty happening outside but pee. Any advice?? She does have pretty extensive food allergies, she's had her blood work done 2x and is on a special diet....the pooping did start to become a daily thing though when I was pregnant. Our vet said sometimes the dogs know before the humans (about being preg). The vet wants to do homeopathic treatments, which we just did with our cat and its a very long, slow process. I need something quicker, ideally.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.....

Do you always go out with her or does she usually go out alone? The reason I ask, is that one of my dogs will run out into the cold weather and come back without doing a thing, especially if there's snow on the ground. I have to go out with her to make sure she does her business or she won't bother. Maybe your dog is feeling the cold more than in her younger years.

My dog was about the same age as yours is when I got pregnant with my second child. My oldest was already 13 at the time and she came before the dog. We had about 6 mths of messing in the house before it stopped. My dog was very spoiled and being dropped down in the family pack once the baby came was very difficult for her.

We gave one of the babies blankets that he had slept with to get her used to his sent and eventually all was well......that is until I got pregnant with the third child and we had to start all over again....same thing, took about 6 mths.

I am at a loss here to understand some folks attitude. It is not illegal/immoral/unneighborly to walk one's dog at 0530. It IS at least unneighborly, if not against local noise laws, to allow ones dogs to bark incessantly at 0530---regardless of reason. Again, when a person decides to have a pet, they need to assume certain responsibilities---one of which is to prevent the pet from creating a noise problem. I fail to see how this problem is in any way the fault of the 'Trainer from H%ll---other than the person is making good use of a training opportunity. However, if she has done this 'training' for more than a couple of weeks and still needs to do it---the dog she is training is not getting it, or she is a terrible trainer.

I also agree about elevating the older dog to a dominant position in the house. When our dog died, and we brought in a new companion for Ricky, we intentionally always went to Ricky first, and said so. Ricky, let's go outside. Our pup learned to "wait for Ricky" as he would walk proudly out the door first. When we fed them, we would say Ricky eats first. Actually we only set down his bowl first, then fed the pup. Even now a year later, we always let Ricky go first and make a big deal of it. Blaze knows nothing else. Ricky leaves and enters the house first. He eats first and gets in and out of the van first. We brush him first and pet him first. Even if Blaze runs up to us to the gate first, we often will stop petting him and pet Ricky when he arrives. All of our dogs are lap dogs. We just sit on the floor. In time when the older one feels more comfortable, the little dog may be a more exclusive lap dog, but for now, I would sit on the floor, and pet the older one first. We keep our dogs in the most popular area of our house, so we go to them. They are rarely alone, but we do not allow them into our living room or bedrooms. Those are off limits, so we don't have dogs with us 24 hours, and we sleep without dog dander since we are very allergic. Therefore we can easily declare that Ricky is first in whatever we do. I don't think you will have a problem after a couple of weeks. If you do, you might consider discussing this with the Vet to see if there is a mild medication you can give your older dog for anxiety. One more thing - when we were walking our dogs, Ricky used to always poop. We would scoop it up, and walk with it. Once my husband hurt his back and had to stop walking with us for a couple of weeks, I quickly got tired of this process. Before our walks I would take the dogs out as usual, and I began telling Ricky to do his business. He would walk inside, and I would call him out. I kept telling him to do his business, and he began doing it. Now he understand that he must do it before we walk. We haven't needed the bags for about 6 weeks. It may be that your dog is performing for you in a more dramatic fashion than the pup can do. You might keep the dog outside with you (and not the young dog), and insist that he poops before he comes in. Even give him a treat if he performs for you. Ah, what a great bunch of folks here! It does matter what age and breed of dog. The larger breeds should not receive a bunch of repetitive stress on their joints as they are growing. This would also be true with a little dog whose breed predisposed them to patellar subluxation, of course. What you win is some peace in the house, and tired out kids and dogs. :-) But an adult (over two years) sturdy dog is perfectly capable of fetching a ball up and down an indoor staircase, which is an excellent way to wear them out. If you have kids (depending on their age/maturity) who are also antsy indoors in the cold weather, you can have them train your dog in ways that will wear them all out and save your sanity. Have them play a game where they take the dog down the stairs on a leash. They climb up the stairs. If the dog gets out in front of them, they have to go back to the bottom of the stairs. They can use treats, petting and praise. The first kid who can go from the bottom to the top of the stairs with the dog on a loose leash all the way (no jerking) wins. They can win a chance to choose the video, or an extra story at bedtime, an hour of mom or dad's undivided attention to fingerpaint or color, a chance to stay out an hour later on the weekend, or whatever you feel is appropriate.

In order to not be rude, I am going to choose not to confront the lectures and negativity. I forgot to mention that, yes, we do take our dogs on walks daily as well as take then to the dog park several times a week. I always clean up after them. This is my yard. My yard that is not effecting my neighbors in any way. I am not a new dog owner, nor am I ignorant to the mess (ha) that has been made. I can, and will, clean up my yard, as I have been doing for years, minus this winter. I specifically stated in my post that I had read on this site that some people use organics and worms in order to make a positive ecosystem that uses the feces as food. I was curious enough to ask for more information regarding this method. I included a HUGE amount of information in my post so I could try to avoid the negativity that I knew that I would receive. To those that contributed useful advice or ideas- even if they're not what I'm looking for, THANK YOU. I truly appreciate you taking your time to read and respond.

Sounds like your dog isn't getting enough attention. Have you reduced or eliminated walks entirely? A dog walker and some play time can go a long way to restoring balance in the house. This presumes your vet has ruled out medical issues and determined this is behavioral. How long have you had her? I feel for you and your pupper, but getting her into a good walking schedule so that she has plenty of time to empty herself and get tired out could make a big difference.

First off, congrats on your soon-to-be-baby! A dog pooping in the house is no fun & even worse at this time for you, I'm sure. What does your vet want to treat for? Is it for an anxiety such as one when a new member arrives?
Could it be that your dog's routine has changed so much recently, that she is stressed/frustrated?
My thoughts are retraining, more attention, lots of walks & exercise. Try not too get too upset & scream. Easier said than done, I know - but does more harm, & think of the baby.

This brings back memories of when I was pregnant with my first child and we adopted a boxer. She was housebroke (so they said) but it was awful, and your senses seemed to be heightened dramatically during pregnancy, the smell alone was enough to send me running. She quit doing that about the time I came home from the hospital with the baby. I tried all sorts of things even tying her up outside (which I did NOT want to do, but just could not take the mess at that time) you cannot tie a boxer up, I found that out the hard way, her neck was bigger than her head, so then being 8 months pregnant in June I am running around trying to find her, because when she got loose she RAN. I even tried a harness, the dog was houdini!!! I finally just had to put her in the garage, then hubby got to clean it up when he got home from work, I felt bad about that but it was his dog:) after I came home, she stopped messing in the garage, so we started letting her in the house again, she loved to guard (or mama) the baby. it worked out, but I sure do remember being so frustrated with the dog and I did a lot of crying and screaming myself at the time. She really was a good dog, I felt so bad when I would yell at her, she would lower her head and look at you with those sad eyes, so then of course I would start bawling.
Walking is suppose to be good for you while you are pregnant (hah!!) if you have the energy (I never had any while pregnant, but I have heard others say they do) maybe you could try walking your pooch a few times a day, even just around the yard?? I feel for you and I definitly know what you are going through.

Im not sure I agree with your vet. Your dog could be experiencing a narrowing of the spinal canal, although she is pretty young to be showing that kind of problem unless of course she has had back issues in the past. The easiest way to determine this is to take the dog out for walks on a leash, and not just have to dog go in the back yard.
