Looking at these pictures it's hard to imagine them any other color -- they look perfect. I'm so happy you found the right formula for you, and thank you for coming back to post pictures!

Unfortunately, my spring break is not looking like much of a break, so it might have to wait until I finish the semester in May.

OK...you've inspired me to finish mine. I did 3 doors in my entry hall and then couldn't deal with it anymore. I have a slider and french doors left to do. What brand of paint did you use and what color "black"? My doors remained very sticky for quite a while after they were finished. I wonder if that's because I did them in the basement and it was too humid down there. Did you tape the glass on your french door or scraped the glass when it was done?

I'd love to do all my windows also, but it's never going to happen!!!!

this is not fair. Do you have any idea how much I want to see if I can get the builder to paint all the doors black? I've been saying this to my dh for awhile now....

Would I do the insides of the bedroom doors too? Or just the outside that faces the halls? Oh brother.....

Lol, I know how hard the decision is to take the plunge!

Paint is Sherwin Williams Greenblack (also known as Charleston green, six parts black and one part green)

Wood doors with a light stain/varnish are first:

1. rubbed completely with deglosser
2. painted with SW primer tinted gray
3. painted with SW greenblack satin finish
4. painted with SW greenblack semigloss

French doors were all taped. It is a lot of work, but we have a very patient painter.

Went back and forth on the question of whether to do both sides black or only one side, and finally decided to paint both sides. It adds a real punch to the insides of the rooms, too. And as an added bonus, I am FINALLY going to have Painter Guy do my daughter's room, which is green and I was never happy with the shade of it. She has blue and white toile and the bedroom next to hers is blue and white with goldish yellow walls, so I am thinking I might paint hers a lighter gold. She has a palladian window in her room that lets in a lot of light. There are bifold paneled doors to the closet that we are also painting black. I've got my fingers crossed on that one.

Beekeeper's wife, to my surprise my DH--who never has any opinion about anything concerning the house---came home and said immediately how much he likes them! My mother, on the other hand, sees nothing stylish or interesting about the doors, and doesn't understand why we did not just paint the doors white and repaint miles of baseboard and 12" crown molding all through the house while we were at it.

The painter initially thought I had Lost My Mind... he is now a true believer :)

gsciencechick - We almost have identical doors. I painted my doors black two years ago and still love them today as much as the day we did it. I think yours would look fabulous black.

I agree with cyn427, stop posting these pictures!! Really.. I still have a major amount of work to do on my house restoration.. and now I'm looking at my doors and thinking which should I paint black!! LOL Seriously... I would have never thought black doors could look soooooo good!

kswl: I feel your pain on the tediousness of this project! Are your doors REAL wood or the faux panel wood(cheaper) variety of newer homes? Yours look fabulous, mine were not changing color.

Stork lady, your front door looks GREAT! Every time I see a black door I am surprised all over again at how great they look.

Ratherbesewing, our doors are solid wood. That's one reason I put off painting them. But the stripping, sanding, restaining, and varnishing process was going to be ungodly expensive just for the 23 doors we have on the main level, plus we would have to live without doors for at least a week. As it is, we will end up spending about $100 a door on the painting by the time we are through. It sounds like a lot, but that is still much less than the refinishing process--- that would have left us with brown wood doors instead of these glorious black ones.

The black is so pretty, adds so much character and depth to the rooms. I would love to try it too...

My heart still skips a beat when I see your doors!!! I love storklady's front door as well. I like my stained oak doors (wish they were less "Golden Oak" and more of a brown color), nicks and scratches are sooooooo easy to touch-up using a stain marker, but your black doors have me lusting....!

DH is not opposed, so we'll see when I can actually do this.
