Another black interior door question

Catkin has a post about black doors and it reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask. Didn't want to hijack. So, here's my question -- the interior doors in my house are an off-white (BM Vanilla Ice Cream). There is one french door between formal living room and DH's office. I love black interior doors and have been thinking of painting the french door black. But, I do not have the energy or the time to repaint all the other interior doors. Would it look weird to have only the french door black? Or OK since it's a different type of door (french vs. solid)?

Also, if I do paint it black, what kind of paint do I use? I use Benjamin Moore paint and I recently tried to buy black Waterborne Satin Impervo to paint a small cabinet. The guy at the paint store said he couldn't make that paint in black. Something about it not coming in a dark base. He said he could do it in oil based, which I didn't want. Or he could do it in a non-semi-gloss base. Was he wrong? What kind of paint do you use for the black doors. I'd want either semi-gloss or high gloss, I think.

I think it would look fine since it's a french door and different from all the other doors. It would be like having an accent wall, something different from everything else. You do need a dark base to make black paint, I don't know if that paint has a dark base, but it's true that you need one. I have heard that SW Cashmere leaves no brush strokes so you might want to try that. I've never used it.

I have a similar question. Do people that have black doors paint every single door in their house including bedroom doors and closet doors?

Lol, I know how hard the decision is to take the plunge! Paint is Sherwin Williams Greenblack (also known as Charleston green, six parts black and one part green) Wood doors with a light stain/varnish are first: 1. rubbed completely with deglosser 2. painted with SW primer tinted gray 3. painted with SW greenblack satin finish 4. painted with SW greenblack semigloss French doors were all taped. It is a lot of work, but we have a very patient painter. Went back and forth on the question of whether to do both sides black or only one side, and finally decided to paint both sides. It adds a real punch to the insides of the rooms, too. And as an added bonus, I am FINALLY going to have Painter Guy do my daughter's room, which is green and I was never happy with the shade of it. She has blue and white toile and the bedroom next to hers is blue and white with goldish yellow walls, so I am thinking I might paint hers a lighter gold. She has a palladian window in her room that lets in a lot of light. There are bifold paneled doors to the closet that we are also painting black. I've got my fingers crossed on that one.

I do like the look of the dark wall. However, the views from the back of this house are really great. And when I was choosing wall colors what I found was the darker colors around the windows (for the back side of the house) took away from the view. Hard to describe. With the dark walls, you saw the dark wall and window frames. With the light walls, you see "view". Here's my breakfast area, maybe you can see what I mean. I think I'll just put the black doors on the back burner for now. Thank you for the mock ups, they are so helpful!!

Thanks everyone, your suggestions are much appreciated. I have so much to consider still, as the house is only block at this point. It's a ranch style stucco home, with square windows and columns so the direction is pretty much up to me. With the modern front doors that I chose , and the gray and white exterior with some stone, that I'm planning I think it's more transitional than modern or traditional. The furniture is a mix of Farm house and traditional, a lot of grays, creams. I plan on adding touches of black so I thought black doors would look nice. I'm up in the air with a lot of things, and putting the cart before the horse so to speak with the door color it may seem...but I'm being pressed about the door choice from my husband and if they are to be painted black I'll need to know soon. So thanks for all ideas, much appreciated. I'll decide soon:)

Thanks, Sashasmommy. I was hoping it would look ok. I would like to give it a try.

Has anyone painted their doors (or cabinets) black using a Benjamin Moore paint? If so, which paint did you use?

I'm doing ALL my doors, except our wood stained entry door. We also have four french doors that are also exterior doors that I'm on the fence about.

Hi jillinj! So for our front door (both sides) we used Benjamin Moore High Gloss Black, oil-based. For the interior doors I also am using Benjamin Moore High Gloss Black, latex. I know that oil goes on and wears like a dream but the clean-up kills me, so latex it is. Did you see nanny2a's pictures on the other thread? Gorgeous!

It's got to be latex. As you say, the cleanup with oil is just too much. So, which BM latex paint did you use? Regal? Aura? Thanks! Oh, how are the tiles in the laundry room? Did you post finished pictures? I've been dying to see, but I haven't seen a post about them being done? Did I miss it?

The paint is (Benjamin Moore) Impervex Latex High Gloss Metal & Wood Enamel, and it comes pre-made in Black. That's what I get. It's expensive! Here (Boulder, CO) one gallon is $57. The reason I use it is because it's what I was told at the paint store umpteen projects ago. I should probably check out Valspar and / or Behr but a bird in the hand ... and I want all the doors to match. (The SW store is a bit of a drive, which is why I didn't mention it.)

For my children's rooms I'm planning on just painting the hall-side of their doors, not the side which faces into their bedrooms. I'm planning that because I don't want to introduce that much black into their rooms and then I'm concerned I'd have to paint their closet doors too. And I don't want to do that either. (lazy)

Thank you for asking about my tiles! You are too sweet. They were laid a couple of weeks ago and I just got finished putting the second coat of wall color on. Seriously, I am like one year ahead of schedule. Yea!!! I still have to paint the cabs and then do my gingham effect on the walls, so now I'm one year out again.

I think I haven't been really enjoying the tiles yet because they've been covered with a dropcloth and I am instead focusing on what isn't done, instead of enjoying what is. Sister, I am going to turn over a new leaf!

Thank you, rmkitchen. I thought I knew about all the BM paints, but that one is new to me. Learn something new everyday. Well, about the same price as Aura, so I can justify that. And, I don't need more than 1 gallon for my 1 double french door.

Get that dropcloth up and start enjoying (and sharing pictures with us! I know I am not the only one waiting for pictures:-)
