Can I re-use soil that had damaged spinach in the container?
Comments (2)Spinach is a cool season plant. Check your zone for planting times. Potted soil is depleted more or less from what had been growing in it. It is recommended to start with fresh for new plants. For pots 5 gal. and larger I usually replace 1/2 the soil. I also fertilize with a very dilute solution every time they're watered since some nutrients, notably nitrogen, wash out....See MoreA failed kitty litter composting experiment
Comments (58)Ah, well, it seems I have survived the composting process myself! Anyway, for a cheap source of compostable litter, get 40 lb bags of stove pellets for wood burning stoves. It is about $4 a bag, as opposed to $8 for a 7lb bag of FelinPine®. As for toxoplasmosis, it is not pregnancy that is the issue, per se, rather it is only a VERY small time window (two weeks in the first trimester) during which the disease is transmittable to the fetus, and ONLY if the mother has not had prior exposure. And ONLY if the mother has a new cat, who ALSO has not been previously exposed, because th organism is only present in the feces during a brief window after initial exposure. I.e. it is almost impossible to get the toxoplasmid from cat feces. In fact, a study of the organism had to be scrapped and totally redesigned, because it was based on a sample population of cat owners, assuming they would harbor the organism. Instead, they found that there was no evidence that ANYONE had EVER contracted toxoplasmosis through this vector. Instead, they found that the vast majority of cases (close to 100%) resulted from pica....See MoreWill kitty litter work for this?
Comments (30)As most of you know, I have animals. 13 of them to be exact. Now I know this is not about removing a urine smell, but I use a mix of baking soda, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. I have light carpets and have never noticed a change in colors, but it does remove cat pee. This might help for the vomit. My step mom spilled egg nog in the back of her little Vega one Christmas. This was back in the 70's and they did not have all the cool stuff for odor removal we have now. That car stunk to the day she sold it. I would get sick just riding in it- Trish...See MoreWhere do you keep your kitty litter?
Comments (37)The things we do for our pets! We have 5 cats and 6 boxes. We have them in a closet in our laundry room, in a closet in our master bath, and a few in the basement. We make them from Rubbermaid type storage totes, which helps contain the litter in the box and prevents accidents (one kitty accidentally pees over the edge of traditional, shorter boxes). For the ones in our living space, I put them on heavy duty area rugs from Home Depot or Lowes - they're sort of like water hog mats that can be hosed off. I also use large, washable incontinence pads on the floor surrounding the master closet box, just in case. The one in our master closet also sits on an appliance tray. My husband gave up his side of the master closet to accommodate that box for the cat who lives in our bedroom all of the time. I lined that side of the closet in plastic to keep the walls/shelving dust free, and hung a shower curtain to the entrance so litter dust doesn't make it over to my side. I scoop all of our boxes ALL THE TIME. I don't love having boxes in closets, but it works for now. I figure only about 7 or 8 more years of this and then we should be down to only 1 or 2 cats at most, and can accordingly reduce our litter boxes. Yippee!!...See Morelydia1959
