We have the Silgranit Double Equal, which is 10" deep. I'm 5'6" and have no issues with it whatsoever. I love my beautiful deep sink. I don't have grids and don't miss them. I hand-wash dishes almost every night, too.

Hubby has some kind of hang-up about them being too deep. He feels like he's wasting water. That's just silly, though, as all you do is just not fill it all the way to the top. This actually works out better as it reduces splash-over.

I'm 4 inches taller than you and have a 10"deep sink that I love.

As we went through this process, I became convinced that sink depth, through the source of a lot of worry and stress, is not nearly as critical as having the sink pulled close to you in the cabinet and a good height and reach on your faucet. Otherwise, no matter what depth your sink is, you will always be leaning into it. Think about it -- your hands are under the water stream or out in front of you far more than they are reaching the bottom of the sink. Even if you are reaching for something on the bottom of the sink, for most things you don't have to reach all the way to the bottom to get it. If you do, you aren't likely to stay there long.

I'm 5'8" and have the Blanco Precis Silgranite 1 3/4 (with sink grids) undermounted in Silestone counters. I love the depth but I'm not frequently washing items sitting on the bottom of the sink. If I really have to scrub something which has to sit on the bottom of the sink, I will probably end up just setting it down on the adjacent counter and clean it there.

I have to agree with lascatx as well. My parent's sink has a bump in the counter out which ended up setting the reach to the sink and faucet back a bit further than is comfortable. Especially for my 5' tall mother.

Yeah. Forgot to mention the reach factor. Our sink has about a 2 inch lip in front.

I am 6'2" and have a 10" deep sink (plus the thickness of the granite). I love that sink!! I hand wash nearly all of my dishes too, and the depth does not bother me at all.

I'm 5'9" with long legs. I feel that my sink IS too deep. I'm getting used to it, but initially, I found working over it made my back tired. However, since I do have long legs, I find many things to be too short for me. (Incidentally, because of this my counters are about 2" higher than standard, so my sink is a little higher too.)

Your point about how far the sink sits from the front counter is very good. How much would you suggest? Now that our kitchen is all torn out It's hard to recreate this concept. From talking to the counter/stone people yesterday I'm thinking the minimum they want is 3 inches.

The silgranit I was considering is the diamond double with a pull out faucet rather than pull down. (HD doesn't like the look of those large pull down ones for our space) I would center the faucet as close as possible to the back of the sink?

Do the silgranit undermounts have predrilled locations for the faucet, etc? I'm thinking not.

i don't understand why this is not mentioned more often.
It is SO important. Ergonomics, function and use.

Is there some technical reason why we don't see sinks pulled forward, close to the door of the cabinet?
Are people afraid their countertop material won't hold together?

Even in stores, they position the sink in the center of the counter, centered between the front and the back.
They don't place the sink close to the front.
This leaves 3" to 4" of granite in front of the sink.
It's especially visible with undermount sinks.
I don't get it.

With an undermount I figure I could leave a small strip of engineered stone countertop material in front of the sink. Less than two inches, for sure!

Then, a deep undermount would not require a lot of leaning over.

Leaning over and reaching over uses back muscles a lot. Between your shoulder blades, right in the middle. It can hurt. For most people these muscles are not strengthened by any other activity. Luckily for me it's not a concern since I have other activities that strengthen these mid-back muscles (I've trimmed tree branches with large lopping shears since I was kneehigh to a g'hopper).

I've often seen faucets installed to one side of the sink, so that the handle is closer than if the faucet had been installed behind the sink.

We have the Silgranit diamond double undermounted with 3cm soapstone. I'm 5'6" and my husband is 6'. No problem, even with our old bad (previous surgery)backs after almost 4 years of use.

Our Silgranit came with one hole and knock-outs on either side. The spec sheet at blancoamerica.com will give you the details on your particular sink.

I agree with Lascatx. It's not sink depth, it's how close or far away the sink it to your body. I knew this when I was getting templated and told my fabricator I wanted it as close as possible. Somehow I ended up with it being 4 inches between my body and the sink. I do have a sink tip out(which I never use), but I still think he could have gone closer. So, I do have to lean in to use the sink. My back muscles are stronger now, and it doesn't bother me as much. But, it is still annoying since it can't be changed.

THe depth of my sink hasn't bothered me at all. I think it is 9.5 or 10 inches.

I am having a sink tip out too. Never had one, but given that how far from the edge of the counter will I be able to have this installed? Will 2 inches be enough or can I go less? Are the quartz installers going to say I need more for some reason or another?

I also have sink tip outs and the guy doing the counter template had me worried I'd have to lose them. I ended up with a 4" front lip which includes the "standard" cabinet overhang. I think the standard is 1" overhang. Under-mounting takes up a little bit more inside clearance as well.

My faucet is the very big Hansgrohe Allegro so the spout reaches out quite far. This was a deliberate choice because I know I had a big sink. I also lost a bit more space behind the faucet by going with the thicker granite tiles instead of a thinner ceramic or porcelain tiles. It all fit with just enough space for me to squeeze my towel behind the faucet to clean there.
