I am one of the lucky people who don't get scabies, but many of my colleagues sure do. Scabies mites are perfectly happy to live on human skin, but it depends on whether or not you are susceptible to them. Demodex mites are also called mange to make things confusing, so some things you read about "mange" may be about demodex and not scabies. I have no idea how to treat them in people- that would be a question for human doctors. Hope the puppy is otherwise healthy and happy!

When our son was a toddler he unfortunately got Scabies at daycare. The whole family got treated with a cream that contained permethrin (if I remember correctly). I had to wash all pillows and blankets in hot water and freeze the non washable stuffed animals. It was winter, freezing them was not a big deal. We didn't catch it.
We didn't get it either when the dog had when we found him and it took 3 trips to the vet and 2 weeks to correctly diagnose it. You might be lucky.

depends on the bug your dog has as to wether it can be transferred to humans or not. treat it as directed...good luck

Scabies itch like crazy. Bascially they're little bugs crawling on your skin.

I've seen them under a microscope. People can get them, just like animals. They are transferrable. Wash your hands and everything around. Be careful with everything that the dog touches. Scabies are treatable in animals and in people. I think Nix or Rid is used on people...

Years ago, I got my poor puppy with LICE. I bathed her the night I got her home. While bathing, I saw this tan bug stuck to her spine. I knew it wasn't a tick.
I had a lot of work with her...

If there's any itchy disease around, I'll get it for sure!

When I broke out with mange/scabies on my arm (an exhausted stray puppy, who had mange on his chin & neck, rested his head on my arm & fell asleep there on the way to the vet).

My doctor was horrified & made a big scene, told me I had a "third world disease" & that I would have to apply an expensive medication 3 times a day & wait 15 minutes for it to soak in, & then shower to wash off the contaminated medication (really doc? 3 showers a day?...
I'm just grateful he didn't call the health department & try to have me quarantined!)...

I couldn't run home from work every day at lunch, so I used a medicated over-the-counter anti-fungal during the day, seems like Tinactin (although "mange bugs" are mites, it worked because it smothered them), & vaseline & long sleeves at night.

My dog and his 4 sisters had mange of that type when I rescued them as pups. I bathed them 2 x's a week for 6 weeks and I never contracted the things. I treated them with Revolution and gave them benedryl for the itch. Make sure the pet stays on its' own bedding which should be washed daily. They are contagious to other animals, but to prevent this you just treat the other animals with the Revolution and they won't contract them.

I took care of a man in a health care facility that was so infested with scabies, his entire back was a scab...they burrow right underneath the skin and that is what scabs over..gross......

Thank you all so much for the advice! Our vet treated him with revolution and gave him all of his shots and worm medicine. We bathe him every other day and the sores are getting much better. I cuddle him a lot and then I wash. I don't like the idea of him not having touch during this time. He is a good dog. We were told that he is half neufoundland and half great pyrenees. He is smart and very cute. I work with foster children and hope that he can be a good therapy dog. I have heard that neufies are gentle and sweet.

dog scabies and human scabies are two different types. Better find some - try Googling the CDC- there is info there that tells which scabie is infecting dogs and which one is human- it says that the dog type does not infect the human. Better run off a copy and update your vet- shame on him- he should know!

Some people ARE affected by dog scabies. It's not truly an infection, because the mites don't live on humans very long, but they apparently itch a lot when they are on the skin.

Animals do not spread human scabies. Pets can become infested with a different kind of scabies mite that does not survive or reproduce on humans but causes "mange" in animals. If an animal with "mange" has close contact with a person, the animal mite can get under the personÂs skin and cause temporary itching and skin irritation. However, the animal mite cannot reproduce on a person and will die on its own in a couple of days. Although the person does not need to be treated, the animal should be treated because its mites can continue to burrow into the personÂs skin and cause symptoms until the animal has been treated successfully.

Like I mentioned, some people I work with are *very* sensitive to dog scabies and get very itchy for a few days, but then are fine. I don't even get a temporary itch. However, the vet *should* know that it isn't really zoonotic (ringworm, now *that's* a different story).

ringworm..... you had to bring that one up. I work with foster kids and their pets. I got that awhile back. Still itches but not so bad.

Ringworm isn't really a "worm", it's a fungus;
I treated it with the anti-fungal Tinactin.

I used the spray since it was cooling & since I didn't have to get gooey stuff on my hands every time I needed to apply it to stop the itching (gooey was very inconvenient when I was at work), but the gooey stuff in the tube is cheaper.

sylvia, You caught mange/scabies and ringworm and treated them both with Tinactin?

I feel sorry for your dog, and anyone that has to be near you.
