Cat vomiting blood...

First off, my cat is at the vet as of early this morning (as soon as they opened...). They are running a bunch of tests and also doing ultrasound and IV fluids.

He began vomiting blood yesterday (Sunday) - two times total - morning and then evening. He ate and napped and 'seemed' fine.

He is 15 yrs old and has both pancreatitis and diabetes. I have looked all over the web for any info on what would be the cause of vomiting blood and cannot find any info. His blood glucose was running high all day yesterday and seemed unresponsive to his insulin shots.

Does anyone here have any info or experience with this that they can share?

I'm a nervous wreck waiting for the vet to call with the tests and ultrasound results. I just want him to be better. :(

No experience but am praying for you and your cat. Can't imagine how thoroughly frightening this must be.

I have recently discovered the many uses of Hydrogen Peroxide! I also have fur balls that stain yellow/orange. I pour the HP and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Get a rag and blot, then rub hard. All my hairball stains and vomits come up easily. Very few times do I have to repeat. Works well for lots of stains. I just soaked up an old OJ stain and an old coke stain. Did a great job. Hope you have luck with it. A friend sent me this e-mail on the thousands of uses of HP- that's when I decided to try it on stains. Now I can't seem to find the e-mail (I printed it out) and have missplaced it! Darn!

Thanks for sharing.My cat will only eat 9 lives wet cat food.Sometimes he throws up when he tries to eat too much too fast though. Good to know about the small bones though,that cant be good!

Breanna, I certainly would be concerned by a cat vomiting that regularly. What would concern me as well is the long-term prednisone treatment. (Note: prednisolone is safer for cats). Prednisone can cause diabetes. But why continue with this treatment if there is no significant change, especially as steroids have serious side-effects? Did the vet prescribe the dry or canned version of allergen-free food? I usually do not get into dietary big discussions, but dry foods are not the best for cats, although many vets continue to prescribe it. I am sure there will be more expert advice coming your way. When was her last blood test? I certainly would ask for another blood test. Any changes in urinating? --diabetes, kidney problems? Those would have shown in the blood work. The bloodwork and x-rays were within the last couple of days? The vomiting cat could have: Overeating/gluttony Swallowed abrasive material Toxins Food sensitivity Gastritis Dietary indiscretion Food sensitivity Foreign body Enteritis/colitis Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis Rounds, hooks, whips GI ulcer Gastric dilation and volvulus (bloat) Intussusception Constipation Pancreatitis Hepatobiliary Acute hepatopathy Cholangitis Biliary obstruction Acute renal failure Nephroliths Prostatitis Pyometra Peritonitis Septicemia Addisons Htyperthyroidism Vestibular disease Drug reaction Obvious that is a very long list of possible problems, and the physical exam and history is extremely important. For a young cat, foreign bodies are very common, so my first order of business after looking at the bloodwork and x-rays myself (if they were recent) would be to sedate the cat and look in her mouth. Lots of times they have string foreign bodies and sometimes you can see the string wrapped around their tongue. Severe dental problems such as abscesses can also cause vomiting and decreased appetite. I'd deworm the cat regardless of previous history and of fecal test results just in case parasites are the problem- it's harmless to deworm if that isn't the problem and sometimes you get lucky. If you want THE test to find out what is wrong, then abdominal exploratory surgery is the answer. In a cat of that age, foreign bodies are extremely common, and while you're inside the abdomen trying to figure out what is wrong, you find it and fix it. If there isn't a foreign body, you can look at the pancreas and rule out pancreatitis, get biopsies of each section of GI tract and possibly diagnose IBD or other inflammatory GI problems or GI cancer. Losing weight and not eating will lead to hepatic lipidosis which is a potentially fatal condition of anorexic cats. It is caused when their body sends all of their fat to the liver to make glycogen so the body can make ATP the source of energy for all life's processes. Unfortunately if the negative energy state continues, the liver becomes overwhelmed with fat and function decreases, causing even more nausea and vomiting, and if not stopped, leading to death. So it is extremely important to either get the cat eating on her own or to have a feeding tube placed so she can get adequate nutrition and prevent or stop hepatic lipidosis. I just heard from the vet. They think the cause is a bleeding ulcer due to his lengthy prednisone treatment for pancreatitis. The ultrasound was somewhat hard to determine between a mass or an ulcer, but based on the symptoms, we're going to treat as an ulcer.

He's lost a lot of blood and is quite anemic so he may even require a blood transfusion. His red blood cell count is at 13% and normal is in the 30% range. :(

He's going to be there for the day and I 'should' be able to pick him up by the end of today - which is good news.

Unfortunately, he had a turn for the worse and went back into the vet this morning.

He's stopped eating and his blood sugar is quite high. Now, the vet feels that we have exhausted all possibilities and thinks that perhaps it is not actually a bleeding ulcer but quite possibly lymphoma.

I don't know what to do right now. He's eaten about 2 tbsp of turkey babyfood since we got home. He hasn't stopped purring since we got home either.

I asked my vet to do a consult with the local vet specialist clinic to get any recommendations. But, this may not be something he can recover from.

I'm so sorry.

Is there a test for lymphoma?

I've had good luck sometimes mixing a little Karo syrup with baby food (read the label & don't give him anything with onion) or strong-smelling fish such as sardines.

I just lost him. He had a stroke. I rushed him to the vet and he was completely blind by the time we got there. I thought he was going to die in the car. His temp dropped very quickly and his tongue turned white.

They recommended that we end his suffering.

I'm overwhelmed with grief right now due to the loss of my kitty. We had 15 great years together. He will be dearly missed.

I am so very sorry.. The hardest is always to erase those last images of your beloved suffering and to remember those 15 wonderful years... There is no word that can take the pain away!

Thank you everyone for your kindness and for understanding.

Here's some photos of my beautiful Siamese boy, Saki. He was my very first rescue cat. He was a kitten from a pregnant cat I found and took care of. When I saw those blue eyes of his, I just couldn't give him up.

I have a 'former' pregnant feral cat/rescue, Savannah, who is now a full-time tamed house cat. She really attached herself to Saki and he was instrumental in socializing her. She has been walking around meowing looking for him since last night. It's so sad to watch.

What a beautiful cat!! We have a Siamese mix who is about to turn 16 and is having some health problems. We've had him from the time he was a kitten and I dread the day we have to let him go. I really feel for you!!
