Parker House or other rolls?

We're going to a smallish gathering for Thanksgiving (7-8 people). I'm bringing desserts and dinner rolls. I'm not very experienced at making bread, but I have made Parker House rolls. They're pretty good -- slightly sweet, with a rather dense texture. I've never made either Sol's honey rolls or Terri's honey wheat rolls, but they both sound so good, I'd like to try making them both sometime.

Can you help me decide what sounds good for Thanksgiing dinner? Parker House or one of the others? If my my baking attempt fails, my backup plan is corn muffins.

Thanks! I don't know why these decisions are so hard sometimes.

Make the Parker House Rolls; I'm sure they'll be delicious. I don't think Thanksgiving is a time to try something out for the first time, unless you're an experienced baker with usually good success. Next year you can experiment. Anything home-made will be welcome I'm sure!

I agree.....and there's nothing wrong with parker house rolls..
But you could take the dough for the PH rolls and form it into clover leafs...if that makes it different for you.
But as I said before...if it ain't broke don't try to fix it!

My dh and two friends had the pleasure of meeting Anne and Max this spring. We spent a Sunday helping them in their garden. They are two of the warmest, most generous people with a great sense of humor. The garden is incredible with the soaring giants rambling through mature trees and enveloping the fences. Anne was kind enough to share cuttings and being a novice at rooting, I still managed to root some. The garden is a lot of work for them and they are most grateful for any help that is offered. While getting directions from Anne she warned us they had several dogs and so I came armed with doggy treats. Hercules would follow and smell out my pockets looking for more. He's a wonderful dog. You might be able to successfully lubricate your wooden screens with paraffin. Paraffin is used for canning fruit and vegetables, so it can be found in stores that cater to people who do canning at home. Crayons, the kind that children use for drawing, are made from paraffin, so you could used an appropriate colored crayon to lubricate your screens (light brown color?). I have never seen screens that retract the way you describe. I would think that they are worth repairing and preserving.

I believe Parker House is a specific shape of any dinner roll, with half of the circle rolled and buttered and the other half folded over and baked like a half moon. . My favorite recipe for dinner rolls. Try a bread machine if you have one. Buttery Dinner rolls [Makes 32 nice size rolls] 1 cup warm water 1 stick butter or margarine 1/4 cup sugar 2 eggs 3/4 teas. salt 4 cups flour 3 teas. dry yeast Place water in bread machine pan. Add melted butter, sugar, salt and eggs. Put 4 cups of flour on top. Do not stir. Sprinkle yeast on top of flour. Turn on DOUGH cycle. It is ready in 1-1/2 hours. Turn out onto floured surface. Do not over work. Pat out gently to about 3/4 inch thickness. [About the size of a med.large pizza] No need to use a rolling pin. Cut with biscuit cutter. Place on sprayed cookie sheet just like in Annie's photo. Bake at 350 for about 15 or 20 minutes. Make sure the bottoms get a little brown. I also like using my large pizza pan with the small holes. This recipe was originally made in a mixing bowl. I changed it to work in my bread machine. Shirley

i always roll everything and infact layer things like underwear, tees, tops, pants and then roll multiple things together. i usually only wear linen and cottons and i layer cotton capri's w/ soft tees then roll. i don't have much of an issue w/ wrinkles, i do hang things as soon as i arrive somewhere and will spritz and run a hot hairdryer over things if needed. i have been caught several times w/ airlines w/ bags over the limit. if i'm close i remove items into my carry-on (my purse go in too) which i pack light just in case. i can't imagine just taking 1 bag OMG i'd spend a fortune shipping my shopping back to the US lol. i have had to buy a new piece of luggage atleast 5 times while on vacation because i bought too much for my luggage lol, this is my solution to avoiding paying $100 for being over 50lbs per bag. ~ liz

I think I'd stick with a familiar recipe this year. The good thing about a flour based roll as opposed to the corn muffins is you can sop up the gravy with them and you can use them for sandwiches with leftovers!!

Thanks for your thoughts and advice. I'll make the parker house rolls.

But here's another question. Whenever I do try making the honey rolls or the honey wheat rolls, are they equally good for both sandwich buns and for "dinner" rolls? Is either better for one or the other use? I was a little confused on that point, but I could tell that people on this forum really love them.
