Dog with platelet count of 16,000, and bleeding.

This will get long but here goes. My old girl (11-12), Sweetpea, has been healthy all her life. The other day, I noticed some blood coming from what I thought was her gums. I thought it was maybe something to do with her teeth. I was going to make an appt with our regular vet to talk about a dental cleaning etc. The next day it was worse. I woke to find clumps of blood all over the floor in my bedroom. Upon inspection of her mouth, there was lots of blood, large clumps, like blood clots. She was still acting like her old self, harassing me for my eggs at breakfast etc. I took her to my regular vet and she sent me to a specialist emergency clinic. After waiting several hours to see the doc she examined her and gave us an estimate of her care with a list of things she wanted to do. All in all, her estimate was around 5,000. We said ok and signed the paperwork. I would do anything for my girl. She asked if we wanted to spend some time with her before we left, I guess to say goodbye. She had said there was a chance she would die while in their care. This was very difficult as you can imagine. Leaving her just broke my heart. Sweetpea, has never been boarded, never really been away from home. Follws me from room to room. I could almost not bare to leave her.

We started with the bloodwork. Her platelets came back at 16,000, her red blood cells were low at 25% (normal is 35%-50%), her white blood count was normmal. They did an ultrasound and saw no signs of cancer, just some age related stuff. At this point, we made the decision to come and get her and bring her home. The vet was strongly against this, as I can understand. She wanted to do 1-2 blood transfusions. She could give me no explanation of why this would be happening other than the immune system attacking the platelets. If that was the case, she would start her on prednisone and doxycycline in case of a tick born illness. We decided she was old, had had a wonderful life, we wanted her here with us. I would never forgive myself if something happened to her in the hospital. I wanted to be with her when she passed, not in some cage.

We brought her home and started her on the meds. I gave her her first dose of prednisone and antibiotic around 5. She is also getting Carafate to help coat any ulcers or irritation in the stomach. I noticed a decrease in her bleeding before we went ot bed. This morning I see no signs of blood on the floor. None where she is sleeping at the moment either. There is a lot less blood in her mouth. She was prectically dripping blood yesterday afternoon.

I assume this is a good sign. I feel like we did the right thing bringing her home. Her heart rate was very high at the vets yesterday because she was so scared. SHe is calm and happy at home surrounded by people that love her. I guess I am just wondering if there is someone here that has been through something similar and what the outcome was. We are going to follow up with our regular vet on Monday and continue to check her platelet count. My feeling is it's going up because the bleeding is much less.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sandy
