Hi Jeannie, I've been thinking about MAC for a long, long time. It might work in that spot if we were younger here and more able to stay after the rose all the time and if we were willing to let it work on the obelisk without too many horizontal turns requiring much bending. The problem is that MAC isn't very flexible once a cain gets some age on it, and will do its own thing, sort of set in concrete, if you don't keep at it. We'd have to train it frequently to avoid the walk path beside the camellias as well as to keep it from totally taking over the obelisk and choking out the Mortimer Sackler. We're probably not up to that much rose work nowadays, though I do love the rose and want it somewhere where it wouldn't have to share a limited amount of supported climbing space with another rose. I've thought about it more strongly for one or two other spots where its own growth ideas might line up better with ours and not take too much work on our part. The same considerations apply to Lamarque, but the difference in flexibility might be a real difference. Once or twice a year of pulling the rose away from the camellias would probably work for Lamarque, but might come too late for MAC. Both roses are such vigorous growers that they'd be expected to outgrow the obelisk and start to claim other areas by year three. With Lamarque a discreet peg here and there when you get around to doing it might work? With MAC, my thinking is that perhaps you'd better get around to doing it now, or perhaps get handy with a saw later. That said, I still do keep thinking about MAC. What a wonderful rose it is! I will have to say this: it does sorta end up on your face, depending on how you wash your face at the end of the night. Now I don't know about y'all but I go through this 20-minute ritual every single evening. I first rinse my face with warm water, then use eye make up remover (you do need it with Lash Expansion - it's not waterproof but it has staying power). Then I put Clean & Clear cleanser on my face and let it sit, then I exfoliate. Then use the astringent and then of course the lotion and the eye goop. Then like a day later I'm ready to do it all again... LOL... kidding... Anyhooie you most likely will need an eyemakeup remover. The best overall that I have ever used, and this is coming from a girl with sensitive skin AND who wears contacts !!!... is Victoria's Secret eye make up remover. It is crystal clear and it is kind of an oil-water mix. You have to shake it first. It is not oily and not alcohol-y. Just perfect. It didn't harm my sensitive eyes or my sensitive skin, it removed the Lash Expansion, and you only need a little. Normally I dislike V.S.'s line of make up, cuz it's either too perfumey or too expensive, but my friend works there in the mall and she told me I had to try it. @ erett The travertine-look tile is too blue for your kitchen. Sorry but that's going to be one BIG clash. The more marble-y looking one is the best match to the counter tops AND the cabinets. Right now the cabinets are driving everything towards the creams (yellow based white). As for running right over top of the current tile, I am going to caution you to think about this one. Please take the time to purchase an 8ft long level (the metal things with the glass bubble in it) and stretch it across your current floor. See how FLAT and SMOOTH it is. Vinyl is highly flexible. It LOVES to dip down into hollows (grout lines and pits in the tile) and hump over edges (each edge of each tile). We call this telegraphing = horrible thing to have happen when you spend money on a 'perfect' floor. I can tell the tiles have some texture to them. That texture has to be 'knocked down'. That is to say you need to grind them (all that dust you were trying to avoid = still going to happen). And then they have to be filled (leveling cement = SLC). But before you do that you probably have to prime them. Each and every 'high point' of the tiles (normally seen at each and every grout line) has to lie flat against the next tile = filling all grout lines. Whew. The cost of doing that = $2-$3/sf (depends one where you live). The cost of removing the tile = $2-$3/sf. The benefit of removing the tile = you never have to deal with them ever again = very good thing.
