Worried: Frameless Cabs Over 32in Wide w/o Center Stile
Comments (15)The reason I prefer not to go over 32" without a center stile is that I'm known for loading up my shelves. Only a weightlifter would be able to carry a single row of the art/history books that are crammed tight onto every shelf of all 23+ bookcases we own. My DH worked in a warehouse and regularly hauled around 100-lb boxes, but even he can't carry around more than about half the books on a single shelf comfortably. Now, my kitchen stuff is very good quality but not as heavy as an entire row of my art books. However, it wouldn't take much to get there - my 6-qt cast iron Dutch oven and two 25-lb bags of rice (which a lot of Asians have on hand), and you're getting dangerously close to the 75-lb limit on most kitchen cab shelving. I have five different sets of dinnerware service, and some of them are VERY heavy, to the point where you wouldn't want to carry all 16 dinner plates at one time (unlike bone china, where an average adult could manage 16 plates with no more trouble than it would be to carry 15 lbs. of sugar or flour). If you have any doubts about your shelving in a cab wider han 32", the solution is simple. Weigh what you are going to put into it, and see what the total is. If you are well under the weight rating - your cab maker should be able to tell you what the max load limit is per shelf - then you'll be fine; e.g., you're only putting 50 lbs of kitchen stuff on a shelf rated for 75 lbs....See MoreHelp! How much space is between your upper cabinets and counter?
Comments (29)Mine are only 11.5! We re-used our 80 year old cabinets (all new insides and refinished) and in 1927 when they built houses, that's what they did. The downside -- very few appliances will fit under, but that's alright with me because I want them put away off the counter. The toaster and the Breville convection oven both fit (the Breville, just barely). The upside -- the plates and dishes inside are very easy to reach. I'm 5'3". Now 11 would be way too low for most people but going lower than the standard 18 can have its benefits....See MoreNewbie Kitchen Remodel-Cabinet Guidance Needed!!!
Comments (14)I just had Kitchen Cabinet Kings's cabinets installed. My thoughts: Pros- 1. they gave me a design that I like. 2. They arrived quick! Probably within 10 days (how far out is your custom guy? Maybe with your condo that's not as concerning) 3. All plywood, soft closes 4. Cost (big one for us, especially this isn't a forever house) Cons- 1. My installer is a retired cabinet builder and while he didn't say they were awful, he didn't say "wow! these are awesome!!" either. He did say quite often "these aren't square" and once "anywhere they could cut corners they did" 2. The crown molding was about 1.5 of an inch from the ceiling. Their design didn't have way to deal with that. That seemed like an obvious thing to me, make the crown molding go clear to the ceiling....Good thing I had a good installer. I contacted KCK and they weren't so friendly, but did send me some moldings to make a stacked molding so I was to the ceiling. 3. The base cabinet shelves they send are like 1/3 of a shelf. I can't tell if I hate this, or it will be handy for tall appliances. Overall, I think our cabinet guy made them look good. They were pretty good to work with too. Jessica always got right back to me....See MoreFinished yellow cabinets w/ mirrors mix DIY
