Paint for toy chest question

We have a 20+ year-old pine toy chest with 20+ year-old satin white paint of unknown brand covering it. The paint is in good condition, except for one area that has a bleed through of sap or something, an oval that is amber in color and about 2 inches long. I would like to use a white primer on it and then paint it with a number of different colors and patterns for our grandson (e.g. black and white checks, pastel spirals, sailboats). I like the chest a lot because of its safety hinges and air openings. What paint would you recommend?
