old cat and young child

Our almost 10 year old cat has never liked our almost 6 year old daughter. Usually just ignores her but, if dd gets too close, the cat will bat, hiss or growl. She has, until recently, scratched her twice (and they weren't bad scratches, we had to give the cat a bath in 1999, I KNOW the cat is able to do damage!). However, recently, the cat is stalking dd. She will hide under the coffee table and burst out and scratch her, charge after her, etc. No warning at all. DD is VERY respectful of this grouchy old diva. Lets her have her space, doesn't pick her up, walks a circle around her, etc. She feeds her and changes her water AND cleans up her litter box. What could be up with the cat all of the sudden? I feel so bad for dd and the cat.
