Have you tried yogurt? Let her have a spoon w/o the tablet, then give her a spoon with the tablet and a spoon w/o the tablet. Also the cheese that squirts out of the can works well too. If that doesn't work just get her to open and lay it in as far as possible and use a medicine dropper with some water in it and squirt it in, you have to be quick but it works. You can also get a product called pill pockets that you stuff the pill in, but if she is being picky she may not eat them. Good Luck and hope your furbaby feels better!

Go to the pharmacy and buy some empty gelcaps, then put the crushed tablet into a gelcap. That will mask the med's unpleasant taste. She should then eat it if you put it in a small, tasty treat.

I know what you talking about. My dogs do the same if the tablets have a smell.
This is what i do.I break the tablets in 4 quarters and
stick each quarter in 4 pieces of String Cheese(Mozzarella)
and feed it by hand.
If the tablets have no smell i crush them til they like powder, and mix it under the food.
My vet also recommended putting the med. in "Honey buns"
I have rotties and it works for them and myself.
I don't know about ice creme.
Ice creme is bad for a dogs belly.
Mayby wait until she is real hungry????

Often we are more freaked out about giving dogs medicine then they are. Wait until your dog is relaxed, give her a bit of a massage, be calm and relaxed, open her jaws and just put the pill down her throat as far as you can. She will make a face and spit it out if you did not get it down far enough. You and your dog will get used to it. Really try it, it is not so bad. My dog has gotten to the point where he can ask me for pain meds for his leg....

I can relate! My last dog, though small, was the worst at giving meds. I would rather medicate a large dog any day!

First, ask your vet if the med comes in a liquid form. It may cost a little more but it's worth it. Only recently did I find out one of the antibiotics I had to give on a continual basis came in liquid. The vet never mentioned I had a choice.
If it doesn't come in a liquid form, crush the pill (check with the vet first to see if the med can be crushed) add a small amount of water or broth, draw it up in a syringe and put it in the side of her mouth.
Life will be a lot less stressful.............

I have given pills to dogs to many times to count. I now have a large dog that is somewhat difficult.

I use boiled chicken liver. When boiling it, don't over cook it, it gets dry. I usually stand and wait for it to get done, cut a piece after a few minutes to make sure it's done.

When it's just done it's moist and easy to hide a pill in. Just press it between your fingers to make a little ball.

Works! Dogs love liver and gulp it down.

debbie - I don't know what med you are giving, but don't crush it unless your vet says its okay to do that. Some meds are compounded to be released at a specific rate, if you crush the pill, that release is absorbed all at once.

One word answer - VELVETTA - cheap and dogs love it. My old gal takes 16 pills per day. Until a bout with GI upset, we always gave her meds in Velvetta. Now she gets the pills mixed into some wet food in that is put in with her dry.

If your pet has no stomach problems, I say use Velvetta. I've never known a dog that didn't like it. It's cheap and lasts forever.

Or ask your vet if you can get injectible meds. No idea what you're giving her, but I always get injectible Pepcid for my ancient kitty with tummy problems. Cottage cheese works well (it's lumpy:-) for hiding dog pills in dogs not feeling well. And cream cheese balls are my method of choice for healthy dogs.

My Great Dane has severe thunderstorm anxiety, sometimes by the time I get here meds in her the storm is already here and she is petrified and won't eat a thing. If you can get the pill between her gum and the back of her throat even if her teeth are clenched shut and rub her throat she is forced to swallow. Just watch your fingers! LOL

I always try to hand feed her first though putting the pill in a piece of smelly lucnhmeat or cheese.

One little trick I learned from a vet tech. If you pop the pill in their mouth and then immediately blow on their nose/face, they tend to swallow. Try that.

I put my rotties meds in tuna. Maggie and Abbie both love tuna so it works for us.

sort of off topic but I'll never forget a story from Readers Digest.

A couple had a horrible time pilling the cat. It would be a nightmare routine, wrap the cat in a towel, one hold the cat and one force the pill into the writhing cat's mouth. It was always a fight and struggle.

One time all heck broke loose. The cat got away, the pill rolled across the floor and the cat walked over and ate the pill.

I've found that mixing it in a bit of meatpaste works as my pup has been on long term antibiotics and then decided she didnt want to take them. Pop it into a bit of meatpaste roll into a ball and she should just swallow it down mine does. good luck

hiding it in her food, or if its a liquid, poor it into her water bowl, add some water, and let her drink it up(dont worry, if a dog is thirsty, she'll drink anything! how do u explain toilet drinking?)take a peice of bread, hid a pil inside it, and give it to her, or stuff it in her mouth,tilt her head so her muzzle points upwards, and gently rub her throat, urging her to swallow it. if u think she did, check her mouth by firmly, but not roughly, squeezing the top of her mouth, and gently forcing it open.

I use ice cream to give my dog meds. Just bury the pill in a spoonful of ice cream. My dog loves ice cream and never refuses. A gob of margarine works also.

I wrap the pill in a bit of any kind of cheese, mushing it up into a ball, placed on top of his dinner, it's the first thing to go. He thinks dinner had a treat on top.

I use a little bit of canned dog food. Drop the pill in the can, make a little ball with the spoon and she eats it like it's a treat.

Use a little piece of bread covered with peanut butter - put the pill inside.

two of my danes are on antibiotics right now. i find the easiest way to give them the capsules is to hide them in a "meatball" of canned dog food. they don't normally get it (they're raw fed), so it's a real treat and it's gone in one gulp, meds and all!
