When the Search function doesn't work

On Saturday, Foodonastump said the Search function is not working (sometimes it is, but it's so not good you can't tell. LOL.)

I don't recall who, earlier this year, said she uses Google instead. For example, Chase was trying to find a posting on ginger cookies. Using Google, enter "ginger cookies" gardenweb. (The quotes tell the search engine to search for both words in the order given.) When I did this, I got:

There are a few reasons that the search function doesn't find things:
The data that it is searching is only updated every 24 to 48 hours so if you are searching for something that was posted this morning, it may not be found.

The search engine only looks for exact word matches. Say you are looking for a post on what to do with your carrots and you type carrots into the search box - the carrot cake recipe that calls for a cup of grated carrot won't come up if "carrots" because the search will only find an exact match. Same thing if you search for "carrot" and the post only has "carrots"

If you are looking for "ginger bread" and a post has a recipe but but called it "gingerbread", the gardenweb search won't find it.

That's why a google search works better.

I always use Google to search on the Gardenweb. That was how I found the recipe for Nancy's Vodka Pie Pastry that Sharon was looking for. I don't even bother with the quotations.

For years I have used http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en with gardenweb.com in the domain field. This allows for a variety of inclusions and exclusions in the keyword and phrase fields. The display of sort order is unfamiliar but one can quickly get accustomed to this by adding and deleting keywords and phrases. Once one finds what one wants there are several ways to save that thread. If one wants to save it brieflly just drag the address to a gray bar usually found below the address or bookmark it for longer keeping. An additional advantage of Google is that on very active forums one may find stuff in cache that is too old to find on Gardenweb. Here is a link that might be useful: Google Advanced Search

What brand finish works/doesn't work well on old oak floors

We had our 85-year-old floors professionally sanded and finished with Glitsa. It's what our flooring guy called a "Swedish finish" and it was stiiiiiinkay! But it's beautiful, our floors look brand new. The problem is that I'm sure that the guys who applied it were wearing respirators while they spread it; the fumes 24 hours later when I came in to open the windows were awful, and we could smell it when the house had been closed up for at least a month. If you're doing your own work I think I would pick something a little less pungent. Nevertheless, it's a lovely, tough finish. Vicki

Comcast remote doesn't work well when recording a program

John, You are 100% right, the Box is just a mini Computers and are subject to everything a normal computer is (Lockups, freezes, resetting etc...). Sometimes you do need to replace the box ifthe same problem persists. This will happen on my box whether I have anything on the DVR or not. It is very temperamental and will something do it's own thing. There are times none of the Buttons work (on the remote or on the box itself). I usually have to unplug the box and let it set for a while (resetting it). My real problem is with all the Trips I've made to Comcast exchanging equipment. I recently replaced 2 Cable Adapter Boxes and my Modem/Router. The Modem/Router was the 6th in a year. Once I was home and all hooked up one of the Cable Adapter Boxes didn't work correctly and neither did the Modem/Router. I ended up having Comcast come out this time and they found nothing wrong! I packed up the Modem/Router and took them back again to Comcast. They Replaced the Cable Adapter Box with the same model. The Modem/Router, well I requested a Modem this time with no Router. I decided to use my old Linksys Router. I now have everything working except for the Cable Box in the front room (it had a bunch of stuff on the DVR my daughter recorded). I couldn't return the box for fear of being killed by my daughter (would have lost all her recordings)(maybe next time).

Thanks Kathleen - I actually did end up finding it on google. It's a good method to remember because the internal search engine is pretty lousy.

CS - At the time that I posted my frustration absolutely nothing worked. Even something like a lone "ginger" wouldn't have any results.

So many sites seem to have their internal searches driven by google. I wonder if it's a cost issue or something but it sure would be nice to have something more effective than what iV's got. Nothing more frustrating than trying every conceivable way to find something that you KNOW is there but just refuses to pop up!
