Am I crazy to put a silk rug in my main living area?
Comments (15)I own two silk (all silk) rugs I bought when travelling in Turkey. I bought them whilst with a colleague who grew up there, and who took me "where his Mom shopped". Mom was doing okay, it seems. : ) This was a very high end shop, and I had thought id get some great bargain. I fell in love with a small silk prayer rug that was way over what I'd planned to spend. I agonized and decided to splurge. Then, I also bought a larger, 8X10 rug, too... The credit card slip could not fit all of the digits, because the exchange rate was 240,000 turkish Lira to the dollar, so the transaction was in the billions of Lira. Crazy. At any rate, I was told it was best to hang them up and NOT use them on the floor. So, of course, I used one in my entry hall for several years, and the little one I now have in front of my pedestal tub. I have had no issue getting them cleaned, but have done so only twice for the large one, and never for the small one (more on that in a bit). A tipsy guest spilled red wine on the large rug once, and it came out. One of my kids tipped over their bottle another time, and, that stain did not come out 100%. You can see it in certain light. Recently there was a mysterious leak in my BA and my small silk rug was drenched through. I was on my way out the door for a school trip w one of the kids, so I asked DH to try to address it. This rug is one of my fave posessions so I was so distraught. I was so delighted when I came home and it was in place, perfect, looking especially clean and new. I was so delighted with DH! I asked him how he did it. "I hung it up, it dried". The same leak occurred a few weeks later. The rug once again was fine once it dried. Short answer: get it, enjoy it, be a little careful. PS Make sure everyone puts the "telephone" back the right way on tub hardware. The cleaning person would use the hand sprayer to rinse the tub, and replace it horizontally, causing it to drip onto the floor....See MoreThis is why my DH thinks I am CRAZY!
Comments (12)Speaking as an *almost* professional 2nd hand shopper, that chandy is a super bargain and I'd have snapped it up in a second. If anyone worries about their DH thinking they are crazy be assured that most men are on a different wave length than women when it comes to home decor. Compare to what many DH's buy in the way of car or tool thingies. Sometimes mine buys something that's a "must have" and it sits for the next millenium still in the package. But he had to have it, usually "just in case". Go figure. Think of something useless your DH bot and play a little fun comparison game with him. Or just ignore and he'll get over it when you hang it and everyone else oohs and aahs....See MoreThinking of boxing in my windows.....am I crazy??
Comments (10)Thanks all, and Lil, you are right. That inspiration room is to die for including the high ceilings which I don't have, and that is perhaps my biggest worry. Anything that inhibits or blocks light is would seem like an easy "no". But I also think somehow the boxes might make the ceilings look higher, which could be good. I'm wondering if it's possible to have a box without a top so light would come through? I don't think anyone would see that the top is missing. Would be curious if anyone might have experience with that??...See MoreAm I making myself crazy, how can I approach my yard issues better?
Comments (9)Hello again, and thanks again so much to both of you for your help. If you don’t mind I still have a handful of questions and would be so appreciative of any more advice. In terms of putting down pea gravel and not mulch it’s because the area is kind of on a slight side hill and I didn’t want the mulch washing away during heavy rains into my neighbor’s yard, plus the area is close to my house and my soil is very clayish and holds moisture the way it is and didn’t really want to encourage anymore moisture near the foundation. However the more I’ve read about this idea, it sounds like I should possibly use something a bit bigger than pea gravel so it doesn’t get suck in my pup’s paws, etc. So is there something that encourages the Tall Fescue and Oxalis to grow as I’m fairly certain the tall fescue is growing in areas that I “repaired” from dog pee and the seed shouldn’t have had any tall fescue in it. I’m still a paranoid that I’m pulling more areas that I think are tall fescue that possibly aren’t so here are some more pictures to hopefully confirm that what I’m seeing is indeed tall fescue. In terms of other areas that I recently repaired and if I see some of the seedlings/grass growing taller than the others what does that mean? Are those weeds, tall fescue? Am I better off trying to pull them now then dealing with them later? I’m mainly just trying to figure out what is the best use of my time and resources at this point since I’m in the Midwest and summer is almost over anyway ☹ I’ve attached some pics which hopefully helps explain my questions. So is is Tall fescue mixed in right? Is this more tall fescue mixed in and then see the few sprouts of brighter green grass, which is from new seed as this is an area I reseeded this year. Are those brighter tall sprouts weeds or... another example of an area that I reseeded....the brighter thicker strands that are kind of curled over are what? In general what type of grass is in this photo and is the thicker bladed stuff tall fescue near the bottom of the photo or something else? I get confused cause it doesn't seem real "clumpy" Is this a weed or a type of grass? I'm assuming this is a weed or type of bad grass here mixed in, notice the whiteish/reddish blades Well again, thanks so much for all your help, it's so greatly appreciated!!...See Morealterit
