Thank you Felix and Kat. I looked up the tree info and it looks similar to growing trumpet trees. I have a mania for trees which is not too smart at times, but sometimes I get lucky and fall for small ones. This one will go in a 3 gallon tub until I find the best place for it. Thank you cindeea for the kind welcome. You all made me feel very comfortable. I am used to solving these things on my own and it is great to know I can ask a question when I need some help.

Actually, that was the side I didn't do anything to other than cut a few of the larger berry bushes at the bottom of the hill. That birch is in rough shape and without staking it up and waiting several years, it won't survive. I would just assume take it down since it's not really in a great location anyway. I hate to do it since they are becoming relatively scarce due to disease and insects. This picture http://minus.com/lbx4OfKnwRF4xc shows what are definitely blackberry/raspberry bushes. I wouldn't mind having them, in fact I would welcome having a ton more, just not here. Being on the slope they will not be easy to get to when the mature and have fruit. If there was a way to transplant them or something I would love to hear it. I had tried it in the past, but the only way I have ever seen them grow was by accident and negligence. Based on the size of a few of the lower bushes, I would bet they may produce a limited amount of fruit. The smaller ones at the top of the hill however are definitely not mature enough from my experience. Going off on a tangent... I loved having berry bushes growing up and we had a large sandy area on my parent's property that they grew like crazy in. They eventually began to die off and my dad chopped them all down. The began to come back by the time I went to college, but it took a while to get any amount of fruit from them. My last year at college I rented a small cottage on a back road that had the biggest patch of black raspberries I had ever seen. I started picking as soon as they began to ripen and then ever couple days for the next 3 weeks. I stopped for lack of room in the freezer for 1gal ziplock bags. I made at least a dozen pint jars of jam and a few quarts. I gave a bunch away but i'm hoarding the last few of the "good" batch for myself. :) So in other words, I would love to have berry bushes, just not where they are. A lot of what you see on the ground on the left side (looking from the house) is debris and not much in the way of live plants other than some weeds. Obviously it is still very early here and not much has come up yet though. The tree shown in the background of this picture http://minus.com/lbwhVJrx76OE9d appears to be planted from what is left of the mulch/preparation around the base. This shot http://minus.com/lvFny84VUSjeW shows a rock swail that comes down from what is left of the last owners fish pond sort of thing. There is a reddish low lying plant growing on either side that I failed to get a close up picture of. It appears that it will look nice later in the spring but needs some weeding and/or mulching. I will take your advice and try posting some pictures on the "name that plant" forum. In the meantime, would I benefit from getting some sort of tall meadow grass mix to put down in a few weeks? *whoops, I wrote a book

Sure arjay! I bought our kitty condo from overstock and am very pleased with it. It was reasonably priced, very easy to assemble and once I attached the bobbles to it, the girls took to it immediately. They love it and use it all the time. Unlike a lot of them this is not covered in carpet, but in fleece which is great as it doesn't rip out or shred like carpet does and it's much softer.

Hi, Joules, where in Brevard county are you? Did you get beat up by the hurricanes? Seems like I remember parts of Brevard really taking a beating, but then again what parts of Florida didnt. I hope you didnt sustain any damage, and if you did it was minor and quickly fixed. I was so lucky. I dont have many trees, but I have huge live oaks along the perimeter of my property. I woke up the morning after the hurricanes thinking I had done so well, with no damage or trees down, then went out the driveway, and my road looked like a logging company had come down the road cutting down trees. Lost electric for a week, which was difficult having horses, but we all made it. Small price to pay for living in paradise, huh. Barbara, Callie is adorable! Is there anything as sweet or perfect as a sheltie? They arent even dogs, they are precious little souls. My motto is "love me, love my Sheltie". Boy, Tampa was under the gun this year too, wasnt it? One of the hurricane, I forget which one, looked like it had dead aim on Tampa, then at the last minute it hit south of there. Scary stuff. Thanks for the warm welcome, guys.

Things are a little quiet here these couple of weeks because of the major storms. Still many people are without power, heat or a place to live.

I perused your blog. Where in the Great Lakes region are you? There are a number of people here near the Great Lakes.

And did I read something about a short growing season and you want to try things indoors?

I brought a ginger root plant indoors for the winter. We shall see how that turns out. I have a lot of sun - but I am in Minnesota and the winter sun on a bright day might not supply what the ginger needs. We shall see...

I am in NWPA. The season is over outside so I am trying to grow plants indoors. I am attempting tomatoes, peppers, new zealand spinach, herbs, strawberries, cucumbers, and eggplant. I am using a mix of South facing windows and plant lights. Not sure how much success I will achieve but I am having fun trying.

I'm not up on social media so the blog is a huge step for me. It will be mostly pictures and silly stuff. But I figure if someone asks what I am doing, then I can send them there.

Pretty.gurl, welcome to the CF! I am new myself but I like it here. Like you I love to learn.
One year I grew for gifts a type of miniature tomato plants, 10 or 12 inches tall, different colors that can be put on a window. If you like Asian greens like tatsoi, they can probably be successful indoors. From England sometimes somebody post in my threads and she grows passion fruit indoors and get to eat the fruit...

Teresa- You should try sprouts indoors also mesclun mixes don't need much space.

Welcome pretty.gurl. Experimenting with gardening during winter is fun and keeps the gardening urge happy. Have you tried winter sowing seeds outdoors? I'm trying to remind myself to do some. I didn't get to prep any ground but I'll a least put some lettuce seeds in pots. Interested to see how early they come up.

All I have planted outside are onions, garlic, and shallots. I have never heard about lettuce seeds in winter. Thank you for the suggestion.

Growing things indoors can be very interesting. If you have good window light there is a lot you can do.

Thank you dcarch, for those great pictures. They are prettier than bonsai even! I have a black thumb, in the past my indoor herbs had either black canker or white flies. I wonder what potting soil to use, what to fertilizer with, and how often I should water indoor plants? Thanks.

Welcome pretty gurl or I might just call you PG, lol!! I used to live in NW PA but now live in NE PA. I also love to learn, I have a very experimental attitude in the kitchen, much to my conservative SO's chagrin! He loves the tried and true! I also love to garden.
