Max coughing and puking

We got Max from our local shelter about 3 months ago. It turned out he came with feline distemper as standard equipment. So 4 days of intensive care at the vet and $500 later I seem to have a healthy cat. He seemed to be thriving and gaining weight for about two months.

Fast forward to about 2 days ago and he starts barfing twice a day. He gets dry food and a "treat" of canned for supper which he wolfs down. He barfs about midday and at night. He also has a cough which doesn't sound like the coughing cats have which is associated with hairballs. It is just a brief strong coughing spell. He also seems to be dry retching occasionally.

The puke seems to look like his canned food (no blood, no bile), you could almost put it back in the can and resell it. There is a very small amount of hair in it. I made another appointment at the vet for today but he didn't puke last night so I cancelled it figuring he just had a bug he managed to fight off. But today sometime around noon he barfed again.

He wolfs down his wet food for supper so we going to give him just a very small portion of wet food tonight. I was thinking of cancelling his canned food supper entirely also to see if that would help.

Anybody have any other ideas, he is a beautiful cat with a nice mellow disposition but these medical problems are beginning to be a drag on my finances, another vet visit and more treatment and I am getting close to $1000 for a cat (I already have a sweet, economy model 7 year old) and then what might happen next in another couple months?? My wallet is getting to the end of its rope.

It does sound as though it's food related. If he seems healthy otherwise, I'd be inclined to play with a change in diet.

My dog used to barf regularly and was eating one of the high quality dog foods. After changing brands he hasn't had an episode since. Your cat's problem could be either the dry or the wet food so you may have to do some test feedings. Does he eat mostly dry thru the day or does he hold out and wait for the wet food?
Try pureeing the canned food, since he wants to eat it so fast, or try a brand that is more of a pate.

BTW, more vets are recommending cats eat only wet food.

We let him graze during the day since he was so skinny after his bout with the distemper (he needed to get his weight up). He just seems to go nibble over the course of the day.

We also had him on some of the easily digestible wet and dry for a couple weeks after his bout with the FD. Tonight he got less canned and if he pukes tonight, tomorrow we'll feed him some of the easily digestible dry and wet to see if that helps. If things don't start to get better by Monday I guess he'll have to make another trip to the vet.

What has been said above is so true. I may repeat what has already been discussed: 1. Do not try to fight with nature: Do not plant most of the sun perennials in shade locations. My shasta daisies, Veronica, etc do not like it. 2. Vice versa. Do plant endless summer hydrangeas in places with more shade. We had a very long, hot and dry summer and I ended up watering them almost every other day or they will wilt even though they only got a couple of hours of afternoon sun (try to avoid afternoon sun, as per planting instructions, but I did not follow the instructions:( 3. Do not try to have more plants than your space and garden design allow. I had to work very hard to stay away from the nurseries or mail order websites. otherwise I'll keep getting more. Then I ended up having to frequently move, re-arrange, thin,.... for me, less is better with the right combination of plants. And this weekend, I had to get a rose of sharon, so here goes with my learning::( And this shrub will need a lot of space to grow. 4. Try to divide plants in mid spring or early fall (Late April and mid-late September here in Chicago), when day time temperature and sun are not too harsh. It is much easier to do divisions during these times with less need of watering and better return of my time. 5. Plant most of new perennials or shrubs in early fall, most of them will be on sale, and need less watering, and they will perform very well next year. 6. One more thing I have not figured out is how to fight mildew/fungus. I lost several garden phlox, even the mildew resistant ones (some of them are in sunny locations). Once they have it, it is very difficult to get rid of. I tried spraying, etc. but finally give up and got rid of the plants. But I really love those tall garden phlox. Seysonn, So are you saying its better to keep them in the smaller pots. I have 40 plus seedlings that will eventually be potted up and placed outside for the season in the next couple weeks. I have pots ranging from 1 gal to 20 gal. Any suggestions on which plants produce better vs pot size. For example should I keep the sweets and milds in the smaller pots and put the hots and super hots into larger pots. Or vise versa. I know for sure now that Im going to keep the max size to 5 gal now but was just curious. Will keep my bigger pots for my tomatoes. Last year my peppers produced til early October and I just purchased starts from Lowes and planted in June so I can have a fairly long season with the early start now. I'm glad to hear that segregating Max from Pumpkin and the kittens has calmed things for the time being. I hope he keeps his cool until you can get Pumpkin spayed. I certainly know how the dynamics in a cat-heavy household can ebb and flow. I currently have 13 feline and 3 canine kids. We were up to 14 felines until we lost Bitsy to CRF in Feb. Yes, we kept all of Tommy's babies and nephews, though one disappeared a few years later. We still have Tommy's three daughters and one remaining nephew. Tommy's sister was killed by their previous owner during a drug-induced rage. Tommy and one of her kittens were injured during the event, and Sister's two kittens were severely traumatized. I rescued Tommy and her three kittens and two nephews. I nursed Tommy and her injured daughter back to health while Tommy nursed all five kittens to weaning. The Queen of the Domain, Pea, detested them all. We lived in a very small, two-story house, so Tommy and the kits had the upstairs while Pea had the downstairs and outside kingdoms. When it was time for Tommy to wean the kits, I had nowhere to put her, so I gave her to my friend. Eventually I managed to integrate the Babies into Pea's kingdom, but she always hated them. Fortunately, the Babies never challenged Pea's position as top cat, so she tolerated an uneasy truce with them. Pea was a tough old gal, in her teens when the Babies came into our lives, and never gave them an inch of slack. Congratulations on a job well done, Dr. Janie. (Even resulting from using some of the local characters as guinea pigs). With them saying these days that with our diet and lifestyle being such as it has become, with so many juveniles tending currently to obesity and diabetes, and likely to suffer from them later, and that possibly the long average lifespan that we've achieved may reverse, with a substantial number dying younger in a few years, it sounds as though your specialty may be needed in those years. I hope that, along with our continuing emphasis on curing people's ills, we may become more concerned with building a lifestyle that will forestall many of those illnesses in the first place. I hope that you find a position where you can be of good service to the community and find much satisfaction while doing so. 1) try a different brand and flavor of canned food. 2) Feed much smaller amounts over a longer period. 3) give him a quarter pepcid AC (=2.5mg) daily for a few weeks... that might help a lot.

I gather he was not doing this until recently, so it might not be as food related as you think. A few weeks of cutting down his stomach acid might help a lot. I agree that cats should be exclusively on canned food, as much of a pain that is... but there are perhaps exceptions where that simply will not work. Good luck!

As for the coughing, that may be a sign of asthma.. some cats can cough so badly they puke. Rec: radiographs of the chest. Most severe asthma cases will show up on X-rays.

We cut back on his canned food by 1/2 and the barfing stopped. The cough went away about a week later after he fought off whatever bug he must have had.
