I wish they would do away with that custom here. The cost and impact on the environment to package an ounce of lotion or detergent is unnecessary. Plus the fact that once a guest opens one of those dinky bottles they never use it all up and much of the product gets wasted. In Europe they had wall dispensers in the showers and at the sinks filled with needed products. They were kept filled by the maids.

I would be fine with dispensers as long as they are inaccessable to the guests.
I don't want the person before me leaving anything funny in my shampoo...

A simple solution would be, to package those things in one- use packages. The maid knows how long that guest will be staying, and she'd leave as many to be used for the stay. Everything is tamper proof, and no waste except the package.

When I travel,I take my own, because I prefer to use what I am used to. I thought most other people did also.

I do what you do Sue but when I had to stay overnight this week for work, I forgot it all. I was glad it was available to me but I sure don't like using it.

Yes, the dispensers are inaccessible to guests just like the soap in public restrooms. They were in fancier frosted glass orbs or other high end looking device. Shampoo, conditioner lotion, mouthwash, all dispensed in a sanitary manner.

And no, maids do not know how long the next guest is staying when they set up a room. It is not that simple. Sometimes rooms are empty for weeks before they are assigned. Sometimes a guest doesn't like the view the room they were assigned has or whatever, and switches last minute. Sometimes they switch after one night because of noise or something is broke in their room. Each day they get their assignments for that day and only know to either fluff or to turnover a room. They have no idea if the guest is going to be there a month or a day.

I used to take them but not anymore. I don't like bar soap and they're so small you're starting with a sliver. Last month when I stayed a few days I used one of the bars of soap and left the others on the counter so they could reuse them. I did use the shampoos though. I like the small sizes and reuse the bottles. One place had shampoo in the little packets, similar to ketchup packets. I often wondered how much those things cost. I imagine the packet is much cheaper than a bottle, especially considering the volume they must use but I don't really think they're necessary. I pack a grooming kit with thinks I like and use that. I like body wash, not bar soap. I like liquid hand soap instead of bar soap. I now pack a small pump bottle of hand soap so I won't even use one bar in the places. Maybe I can ask for an extra couple coffee packets instead of the soaps!

To me, a lot of these things are like the "food" on airliners. Why bother?

I did see a thing on some show about motels recycling the soaps. Was interesting. I just thought by going to liquid they could eliminate a lot of that waste anyway. Essentially 2 or more (motel sized) bars of soap are used on each stay and sometimes each night. People steal them so they put out more, sometimes. As I recall they recycled the soaps and sent them to Africa or something. I don't remember the details.

Yes, but we haven't gone on a trip in ages. Mostly we visit family around here.

We do usually take them, they work well when DH goes on hunting trips. I also use them to stock a bathroom drawer for any overnight guests we have.

I always bring my own toiletries including a small pump bottle of hand soap.

I only take the ones left if they will be useful to me or someone I know. Last hotel I stayed at had Pantene Shampoo so I took it and gave it to my friend who is on a very limited income. I liked the hand lotion so took them to keep in my purse. I don't take things just to take them.
