Satin Or Semi-Gloss For JeldWen Interior Molded Panel Doors

Replacing all the interior doors in the house w/JeldWen pre-hung, molded panel composite doors w/ProCore insulation (so they're not entirely 'hollow'). We're getting them from Home Depot in the textured -woodgrain finish as opposed to the smooth, and they're already pre-primed.

All the instructions re painting these type doors says to use semi-gloss or gloss. I want satin! Satin doors w/semi-gloss trim. Called the company (and even their competitor: Masonite) and no one there could give me a logical reason why they both advise to use semi-gloss or gloss.

I'm guessing because they think doors usually get rough treatment and need frequent scrubbing/washing, that the semi-gloss or gloss will withstand washing better than the satin. But it's just me and DH and there's no little ones bashing their bikes into the doors anymore, so that's not an issue. Besides, like I said, I much prefer the subtler satin on the doors.

Do you think that could be their reason? All I wanted was to know if there was some technical reason as to why satin paint can't be used on these doors and no one seems to be able to give me a logical answer. I'm using Sherwin Superpaint, btw.

Anyone care to take a stab at this one?

Yes, I'm sure that is their reasoning. Semi-gloss and gloss are more durable than satin. This logic is actually a bit old school though, as modern day acrylics are quite durable in any sheen. Satin is certainly fine. That's what I would use even with kids.

Thanks, paintguy. I wish I could get that validation from the company or even from Masonite that makes a similar door. (Called them, too.) :( I mean, it's not a rocket-science question for the people who make the product, right?

Your explanation that modern-day acrylics, especially good quality like Sherwin Williams, are more durable than older or cheaper products makes perfect sense.

I've waited y-e-a-r-s to replace all my interior doors, and I really want satin finish. I don't want to have 12 passage/privacy & 6 sliders & bifolds "reflecting light" when the sun hits them because they're semi-glossed! Satin, IMO, on doors is way more classy. Semi-gloss on trim? Yes.

B.M makes a washable matte finish. That (or their less expensive flat) would be my preferred choice for a warmer looking wall in bedroom,dining room and living room. I know some folks like eggshell (and the gloss varies with brands) because it cleans better (not as good as their special matte,though) or is more reflective. I know some people like to use a flat or matte on the walls and eggshell on the ceiling. For these rooms, I would never use anything shinier than eggshell. Bathrooms, I prefer full or semi gloss. Kitchens- kinda depends on how much tile you have etc. The higher sheens are easier to clean, but it depends on the look you want. Wood Trim- Full or semi-gloss- latex for indoors I'm a strong believer in water based latex paints. Your brushes and rollers clean up better and it's healthier. There are some very low odor, no VOC or very low VOC paints on the market now, and Milk paint (I haven't used it). Oil based paints - I use them on metal window frames, sometimes on wood, but I don't think they're necessary. Clean and prep walls and trim. Use a good primer-if necessary. Zinsser makes good primer paint. Primers are latex,oil, or shellac. I mention the shellac (B-I-N) because it covers water stains or grease, mold, and stops odors better and dries really fast. Sometimes it's used as a touch up primer.

Molded door so no true floating panels, therefor caulking will not be necessary. I would select the same paint/finish for the doors as used for the jamb and trim. That is personal, for appearance, not a necessity. I use a semi-gloss enamel. Not familiar with the paint you reference. Make certain the surfaces are clean and free of any oil. Wash with Dirtex, or similar, if necessary. You might find that a foam roller will give you a smooth finish but you'll still need a brush for the 6-panel inside edges and the edges of the door itself. A good quality paint will self-level, just don't rework following application. Yes, personally I prefer to paint doors flat, resting on horses as I have a better chance of eliminating runs. I do two light coats a day apart, flip the door and do the reverse side. I remove the hinges and knobs/mechanism too - less trimming. I'm sure one of the pros can offer some techniques but I don't paint doors often so the above has served me well. Hope this helps, enjoy the new bathroom.

Gloss for all woodwork (doors and trim) and I'd never change that. You get the durability of an oil based paint, in a latex based gloss paint. Anything less is well "less" :) I guess if cleanability/durability isn't an issue...and you like to baby your woodwork...go for semi. I'm in agreement it's a fad ;) Gloss or oil based paints have typically always been the standard for wood trim. For walls, I decide that based on the particular room. In a bath or kitchen I like either a gloss or semi at minimum (cleanability) and for accent walls to feature art (they pop better off gloss). Otherwise I almost always use semi. I do the same on ceilings. I like a bit of gloss on the ceiling for evening light, a trick I learned from a great interior designer way way back. She HATED flat paints with a passion :)

I plan on painting my interior doors, base moulding and moulding around the doors. I plan on purchasing BM ADVANCED Interior Alkyd but I'm not sure if the finish should be different for the door and moulding. Should I use a semigloss finish on the moulding and a satin on the doors or the same on both? If so the which finish? Does the Satin have a slight shine to it? The color will be an off white. The house was built in 1999 and the paint as sprayed on both molding and doors and in the daylight I can see a slight difference in the sheen. Thanks for the help in advance

I am having my Jeld-Wen Interior Molded Doors of 6 years painted again. Any difference in repainting them than with other doors. (I consider this the normal: slightly roughen up with sandpaper, prime with acrylic latex then 2 coats of acrylic latex eggshell)?

why semi-gloss on trim? I now do satin on doors and all trimwork. I think the sheen as well as the color should match.

Not only that, sometimes if you change sheen, the color appears differently or is different. One time when I had trouble getting my chair rail (semi) to match the lower walls (eggshell), I learned that the color formula was actually different for the semi-gloss sheen. Once we (Ben Moore dealer and I) used the eggshell formula on the semi-gloss paint, all was well.

Yeah-
Satin on doors is fine....AS LONG AS you choose a good paint line!
For color/appearance-consistency, I'd use the same sheen on trim though.
Personally, 2 sheens meeting at a door would drive me nuts!

I bought semi gloss; however, I'm going to purchase Satin. Too much of a sheen reminds me of the way EVERYTHING was painted years ago. I'm very much into decorating have worked as one in the past. Satin for my doors!
