Birthday Party for me?

I trust you to be honest with your opinions so, I'm asking you this?

What would you think if someone you knew threw themselves a birthday party? Self serving? Just a good time to party with friends?

I'm turning 45 this summer and although I love my family very much, they stink at remembering my birthday. Last year a few of us went out to an Asian buffet. Very loud and noisy, just get up and get your own food, dessert included. "We're too full so we're not having cake." And I still have 3 gift cards that I've never used!

So I was thinking of throwing myself a birthday party this year. I live in a very large apartment community and we can rent out one of three different rec centers for only a refundable deposit. Each is near a swimming pool. The rec center closest to me has a living area with a big screen TV, lots of tables and chairs, bathroom and a mini kitchen. I was thinking of a swim party with catered casual food (bbq and the like) and just having friends over. No gifts!

What do you think?

I think its a fine idea!
Since your footing the bill I'd say you'll have relatives coming out of the woodwork to enjoy it! LOL

Javachik--thanks for posting! This gave me a much needed kick in the pants. And your daughter is beautiful! This thread totally captures my m.o. I considered starting a similar thread a couple weeks ago, but I got distracted.. ;-) Lately, my MBR is the unending 'work in progress.' I spent several months shopping for a new duvet cover, then finally gave up (couldn't find the colors I wanted) and purchased a regular comforter. It took me two months to put the new comforter on the bed & store my old duvet covers. For about a year, I've intended to buy new chairs to replace the wicker chairs at the foot of the bed. I finally ordered some a couple weeks ago, and DH assembled them last weekend. Now I need to work on replacing art in that room. I framed & hung prints over the bed yesterday, but I still need something to put over DH's nightstand. I promised myself that I wouldn't post to this thread until I'd made progress on at least one more task! So that motivated me to do a 'test run' of various framed prints that I have in other rooms to see if anything works in the MBR, and confirmed what I suspected (none of them quite suit the space over DH's nightstand). So I will probably order something tonight. This thread also motivated me to frame one of my uncle's drawings (I bought the frame in September(!) but just ordered a custom mat last weekend). I ordered custom wood blinds for the MBR in November(!), and they're still in the boxes in the sunroom. My goal for today is to decide whether we can hang the blinds ourselves, or whether we will hire a handyman. I couldn't hang them when they first arrived because I had major neck pain in Nov-December, but that subsided in early January, so it's no longer an excuse.

As they say now: the back story. Birthdays had always been celebrated in our family. My DH passed away in December, 1982. Life was just a blur for months after that. On my Birthday in 1983, my DD and my DGS and I went out to eat. That was it. June 21st, 1984 was my 60th birthday. I had heard nothing about any birthday plans. My DGD was spending the day with me, but that wasn't unusual. I spent the afternoon sewing, as my cat sat in the window and watched. After a while I noticed the cat getting down from the window and heard a thud. A few minutes pass and I noticed the paper boy looking at something on the sidewalk. I went to see what he was looking at and there was my cat. Poor Fluffy was dead! On my birthday! She was 17 years old, but had no signs of being unhealthy.I called to my DGD and she and I went to the back of the area where we had a garden and we buried her. By now I was sad, dirty and sweaty and it was about 6 o'clock. I was wearing some old shorts and a shirt with the hem coming out! I sat on the swing on the patio to rest a minute and then I heard voices and saw people coming down the driveway carrying food and packages! We had always had parties, cookouts, etc. in that backyard, but without my DH, I had done nothing like that. I just didn't have what it takes to do that without him. The yard was his favorite place. My DD had planned this Surprise Birthday Party for me. Now today, how could I not be happy, surrounded by the love that brought these people here to break down the wall of gloom? We didn't have big birthdays either. But one stands out in my mind and still makes me tear up. I must have been 8 that year and my birthday gift was a new pair of school shoes. My mother picked out the most godawful blood red oxfords with argyle plaid laces. Man, those were ugly shoes. I wanted saddle oxfords like my older sisters had. My father's birthday was the day before mine so I never had my own cake. Every year mother made an angel food cake with white icing and that was the cake for both of us. I did get to pick the menu and it was always fried chicken. Sometimes I asked for fried chicken AND chicken and noodles. Now that meal would still make me forget I never had my own cake. Anyway, the year of the shoes, we were watching TV--a new novelty in our home. Back then we watched TV with all the lights off. Don't know if that was the norm, but that's what we did. I kept seeing those ugly shoes in the TV light and I just started crying. Very softly so nobody'd see me. But my dad did. He sat me on his lap and started telling me how neat me new shoes were. Well, I gave it my best try of acting happy about them. Then he got up, went out in the kitchen and was gone for a while. I was beginning to feel better about the shoes when he came in the living room with a bag from the drug store. He'd gone out, walked the 5 blocks downtown and to the only store open and bought me two new sets of paper dolls and a few other little things. I felt so guilty for being a baby about the shoes and somehow I just knew that was probably his lunch money for the week. It's not a happy memory, but that's how much daddy loved us. And that part is a happy memory.

I do not like surprises except maybe a small gift. I arranged a surprise party for my mother’s 80th birthday. My BIL spilled the beans and ruined the surprise, which turned out to be a good thing. Once she knew about the party she added a few names to the guest list and upgraded the menu. That party was a huge success! Another time a friend’s SIL gave my friend and her husband a surprise anniversary party. She told my friend they were going to a fancy restaurant in the city but instead we all were hiding in the rec room. My friend nearly died of shock and looked like she wanted to kill somebody the entire evening. My nephew in law surprised my niece with a new car. She hated it. Hated the style, the color, everything. She also loved her old car which was perfectly fine. Never surprise people with a big purchase. Half the fun of something new is picking out exactly what you want.

Yes, do it! I had my own 40th (small with just friends) because I didn't want a surprise party (not that I'm sure I would have got one anyhow) and because DH is really bad at those sort of things.

I'd just have a summer party if you want to enjoy everyone's company, but personally I'd leave the fact that it's your b-day out of it. Even if you say no gifts, most people would bring them anyway.

Don't blast me, but I do think some people may find it strange that you are throwing yourself a b-day party. Adult parties like that are usually thrown by someone else. Is their a close friend or relative that may be able to 'throw' the party for you (even if you do most of the work)?

I think you should go for it and I don't think it's tacky at all. I wish more people would do that. Personally, I don't like to make a fuss for my b-day and so I don't for others but I love to b-day parties especially when I know this is what they want. Just last week my boss had a b-day. She emailed everyone and asked that everyone bring something for making sub sandwiches, each person brought one thing to put it together. It turned out great. She bought her own cake and had them write "It's my birthday." We thought it was great fun!

Go for it...you're only 40 something once....and for the nay sayers,just say its a summer get together that just "happens" to tie in with my bday
