Honeycomb Pompoms Set a Party Mood
Follow the steps to make these quick and festive tissue paper globes
This fun project is deceptively easy and works well for Christmas, New Year’s, birthdays, baby showers … any occasion! With just a few sheets of tissue paper, a glue stick and a pair of scissors, you can create an eye-catching decoration in a half-hour. This activity is also great for keeping children occupied over the holiday season.
Tools and Materials
- Three 20-by-30-inch (50-by-75 centimeter) sheets of tissue paper to make a globe about 6¼ inches (16 centimeters) in diameter
- Scissors
- One 8½-by-11-inch (20-by-30-centimeter) sheet of gold card stock
- Ruler
- Black and gold pens
- Glue stick
- Needle and thread
- Paper clips
1. Cut tissue paper into rectangles, each measuring about 6⅝ by 7 inches (17 by 18 centimeters). Three sheets will yield 36 rectangles total.
2. On the back of a horizontal piece of gold card stock, draw vertical lines about 1⅛ inches (3 centimeters) apart. Alternate black and gold ink for this – you’ll see why in the next step).
3. Lay the first rectangle of tissue paper vertically over the center of the card stock. With the glue stick, run a line of glue along the gold lines. Put another layer of tissue paper on top and run the glue stick along the black lines. Then add another layer on top and glue along the gold lines.
Keep adding tissue paper and alternating the lines of glue until you’ve glued the 36 rectangles into a stack.

4. Draw two semicircles on the stack as shown and cut them out. Make the base line about 6¼ inches (16 centimeters) to create a globe that diameter. Glue the tissue paper semicircles together.
5. Turn over the gold card stock and cut out two semicircles the same size as the tissue paper ones. Sandwich the tissue paper semicircles between the card stock semicircles. Glue the card stock to the tissue.
6. You’re nearly done! With a needle and thread, put a stitch through each end to keep the layers in place. Tie a loose knot (if you tie it too tightly, the decoration won’t have room to open).
7. Carefully open your decoration. Ta-da! You have a beautiful honeycomb globe.
8. Use a couple of paper clips to hold it open. That way you can fold it closed and pack it away once the festivities are over to use again at a later date.
