About cat allergies (Sleeperblues!)

Sleeperblues posted in the kitten thread that she'd love to have a cat but she's deathly allergic......

If it's really deathly (or at least severe), I guess you'll have to avoid cats. But I just want to bring up the possibility that you might not be allergic to all cats. Many people with cat allergies have found the degree of reaction to cats varies from color to color. I do best with black/black & white cats--I can bury my face in their fur--and orange, especially if the fur is light and fluffy, like a semi-longhair. I also did very well with a part B&W, part Siamese cat we had once. My allergy is at its worst with grey/white tabbies. With pure grey I just have to be careful not to touch my eyes.

My son, whose cat allergy is worse than mine, does okay with an orange tabby and a brown tabby.

This topic was discussed at length in a Cat Fancy article some years ago, and I've found it to be quite accurate.

There's also Allerpet-C, which you can apply to your cat's fur.

I hope there's a chance you can have a cat!
