Do you think you "grow out of", or into, allergies?
When he was a child, DH was "allergic" to oranges and tomatoes. He devours them now, and has for the 30 years we've been together. He doesn't recall ever having a bad reaction to them, but, then, he wasn't allowed to have them when they were in the house because of his allergies.
We got custody of my cousin when he was 13. Poor kid was "allergic" to everything when he was growing up. Dairy, citrus, strawberries ... he had never had ice cream, milk from a cow, cheese from cow's milk, etc. When he came to live with us, he ate all those things (introduced at a about 1/1 millionth of a drop at a time, because I was afraid he would die if he just wanted to "taste a bite of strawberry") without any adverse reaction, and still does.
I've never had allergies in my life. A couple of years ago I started getting a perpetual runny nose and itchy eyes. Husband thinks it is allergies. It's all the time though, not during any certain allergy "season" like some folks get during spring or fall.
Have you outgrown an allergy, or developed one later in life?

I think allergic sensitivities can change. Some may come while others go - mine have. After all, isn't that what allergy shots are all about?

Do I remember that you once mentioned you're a heavy smoker? I don't know any smokers now I could ask, but I seem to recall that many did suffer allergy-like symptoms. That could be the source of your discomfort. (I'll leave out the rest, you've heard it before).

I'm kinda in the middle of a 'self test' for peanut butter. Have over some time developed severe skin itching.... and Dr thinks it is/was dry skin. I've moisturized myself really well (Cetaphil Cream, by the bucket full), continued itching but not really terrible. Then to replace a missed dinner, I had Crackers and peanut butter and the itching in the middle of the night was beyond belief..... so.... no more peanut butter, for a few weeks now resulting is much less itching.... then had a whipped dessert while dining out and I think it had peanuts in it and the night was itchy again.

Gosh, DH leaves that jar on the counter and I am soooo tempted, but it is such relief to not be franticly itching now. I will get brave and test it one day..... not soon tho. I have never had a food allergy.... few pollen ones and not severe. Who knows, and I don't need or want another MD examining this falling apart body.

DH has been working too hard around the homesite lately. With his bad back and painful gut he doesn't need to be laying rocks! But he's doing it, because he loves to play with rocks and is good at it. The muddy morass between the back of the house and the old rock wall which contains the flower bed will be all ROCK. Spring is trying to be here..the dogwoods are just coming into bloom. The daffodils are all gone, the creeping phlox is going wild, the rhubarb is up (pie, soon) and maybe..just maybe..the berries will do something this year if we get enough rain. The peonies are full of buds. I hope we've had our last freeze. I need to mow the grass. That's my job, by my choice, because I don't like the way DH does it; and he's hard on MY lawnmower! I love driving the mower around, with the suicide knob on the steering wheel, and amazing all onlookers with my sophisticated pattern which leaves no blade unmowed without ever stopping and backing up. Tomato and pepper starts are living under the fiberglass leanto outside now, getting strong before moving to the garden. We've had too much wet in the past few days, so the garden area is untillable, and it's still really too early to plant. I planted two rows of Swiss Chard in the middle of the newly-cleaned out strawberry bed, with a row of radishes between the berries and the edging. Why not combine? It's close to the house, and I might even water it. I have rhubarb in the front flower bed, with the butterfly bushes and forsythia. The weather has been weird! A couple of warm, dry days..then two or three days of rain. The plants love it, that's for sure..but it cramps my style when I have to work on the only days that are sunny and dry. Planning a trip in August to the west coast to see kids, grandkids, and old friends. Haven't checked on prices yet, and am prepared for sticker shock. Haven't told DH I'm going, either, but he will support me in my need to connect with family and friends. It will be a busy, busy, trip; I dare not stay with DS and family for more than a week, or we would certainly NOT stay friends! Just too different! I just walked around the yard, and some asparagus is up! Spears the size of my thumb..but not enough to make a meal. I hope they do better this year than they have done in years past. I am getting creative urges..so it SURELY is spring! Replaced a wicker seat in a bench for a friend, and have been looking at my old basket books. Another friend wants me to paint an old window for her for her exercise area, so she has something to look at besides a blank wall. I have the window, and the paint, now all I have to do is do it!

You don't say whether your FP washer is a TL or FL. In my opinion and experience, having to buy ANY washer & dryer these days is a dilemma in itself. If you buy some Top Loaders you can have some control over the water level; otherwise, forget that with any and all Front Loaders. My Speed Queen FL (cost $1800) is built like a tank and works like a charm except for the water level (13.4 gal split between washing and rinsing!???). San Diego Steve will tell you that is plenty and he has even posted that he sold that model and bought the newer one which uses even less total water per wash cycle (11.xx gal I think). He and I are in complete disagreement on how 4 gal of water can rinse a set of King size sheets that remain in a wad. So FL vs TL is the first hurdle. I'm not sure how much water a SQ TL uses, but that would be my first question. My FL spins like crazy. I would have bought an FP but they are not sold anywhere in the Dallas, TX area. Maytag used to make a Centennial model which my daughter in law has and it has a deep rinse which fills the tub, but might no longer be made. Sorry not to have any more helpful information. The Chinese factor would scare me off as well with the FP. Good luck and please post your final decision with the outcome. It will be up to date and may help others.

buehl, Anyone who has cleaned a non-flow through, non-flushing whole house humidifier knows exactly what I'm talking about. Kind of looks like a science fair project gone astray. I know nothing about the Whirlpool (& related brands) implementation. It's possible they addressed this issue but don't know one way or the other. I looked through the service and technical training manuals for the LG steam washer and there doesn't appear to be any flushing of the steam generator. It does have a bleed-off port, but it's only meant to be manually opened if the generator needs replacement (the generator has no serviceable parts). Fans of the LG machine seem to get good results and always point it's top rating by CR. A careful read of the CR article doesn't show one way or the other if they even tested the steam feature. Often if something has a unique feature they will highlight it in a sidebar, but no such info appeared in the article. I believe CR just tests things in pretty vanilla default cycles so it's very likely the steam was never fired up in their testing. An email to CR brought no additional info. Nevertheless, the LG performed well in their tests (most likely without steam) to the extent CR testing has importance to you.

I never used to use the same recipe twice, I'd vary it although I usually used a guideline. I kind of liked a pizza flavored meatloaf and would use pizza type seasonings, mozzarella cheese cubes in it sometimes, a little bit of pizza sauce for one type, served with garlic bread and fries or potato wedges. Another time I used Marcia Adam's recipe for a guideline. I'd use what's on hand. I really like meatloaf. If you don't overseason it, it's hard to goof it up. The one thing that's not tolerable to me is the inch of ketchup or tomato sauce on top. That's gross. I like gravy and mashed potatoes most of the time with it. I think it's important to mix meats in there. I happen to like pork sausage (Jimmy Dean type), ground beef, some pepperoni and bacon. I used to use turkey but got some very unattractive stuff and was put off by it so I don't use it anymore. I don't keep oatmeal around or I might use that on occasion. Many like it and I thought it was OK. To me, it's more a guideline than a recipe. Getting too exact can be problematic. More or less meat, more or less additives will all vary the result. In the link above I gave the listing of things I used in the last couple meatloaves I made and probably how I'll make it most of the time from now on unless I decide to go pizza/Italian style or something. You certainly can substitute for or eliminate the onion altogether. It's certainly flavorful enough or you could add something else if you want. Don't be afraid of it. Meatloaf and meatballs are basically the same thing. You can make meatloaf patties out of it too and cook quicker. Make several kinds. Enjoy them. Combine them. That's what I did when I came up with what I liked. There is no "best" recipe for me, since I like variety. So no "one" recipe will do all the time. Want something a little different? Put some hard boiled eggs in there or some cooked bratwurst or polish sausage. Makes for an interesting presentation when you slice it. I do have one problem making meatloaf. I can't seem to get the good crust on there my mom's meatloaf had and I like the crust! It helped with the thin layer of BBQ, essentially brushed on and then seasoned. I imagine the gas oven was dryer than my electric oven and definitely dryer than the Nesco so that's probably part of the problem. Good luck and happy testing!

yes, per my doctor and knowing from actual experiences, people definitely can develop or lose allergies as they get older!

I was never allergic to the "world" until I was in my 30s...then I became allergic to grass, mold, etc. They may be seasonal allergies, but I'm allergic to something during every season! I quit smoking many years ago, and that helped--but did not "cure"--the allergies.

I have always been allergic to all types of cheese, and can only tolerate dairy products in small quantities.

I am violently allergic to penicillin and sulfa...and also allergic to codeine.

And I'm allergic to cats!! I could never go to visit my grandsons in their home because their mother has a lot of cats (14 at present).

I don't think there's a standard pattern. Some people outgrow certain allergies, while others can show up later in life. My severe allergy to solanine (potatoes, tomatoes, and a slew of other foods) started in my 30s and has gotten progressively worse over the years. I've been allergic to sulfa and a milk protein since infancy. When we owned horses I wasn't able to breathe through my nose for about four years.

Nanny, I, too, am self-testing for peanuts/peanut butter right now. I think peanuts might be a major contributor to my knee pain.

People with multiple allergies or chemical sensitivities might look into whether or not they have methylation problems caused by one or more MTHFR gene defects. These are not uncommon, and can be treated. Here's one explanation:

Add me to the list of those who have developed allergies over the years. One of the worst for me is dandelions. I tested big time for those prolific flowers. Springtime fun here we come!

Allergies definitely change over the years.

We have always had a cat or two, and my son was never allergic to them. Now he cannot even be in the same room with a cat without having a reaction.

Like Wanda, I started with hay fever in my 30's, but now I don't have that any more.

Another thought. It could be that one's immune system just doesn't work like it used to. Or weakens. See the below article for what I am talking about.
