any toy poodle breeders in Maine

Hi, I love dogs, have a poodle, would like another. Any recommendations of poodle breeders in Maine? I want a smaller one, like toy or small toy.

There are huge numbers of toy poodles in rescue waiting for homes rather than breeding them.

Hi again Cindy,
I went to the rescue website yet again & re read the 'rules'. . . according to them, toys & minis are too 'fragile' to be in families with kids! Some families are probably not suited to a small animal, but that's just wrong. We have small poodles & kids, matter of fact the smallest belongs to one of my kids. I think that carries things a little too far . . . They're willing to let you rescue a standard, who, may or maynot have behavior or violence problems. Think that is a little ridiculous. My kids know how to behave around animals, and treat them respectfully and with love.
No wonder I've never heard back, except for the little card saying 'we have a lot of applications, we'll let you know'. Dont flame me for being irked, and yes I know some kids are mean, rough, abusive, etc. Not mine, and not the majority of kids.

Digby - great name, Marda and he looks a handsome lad. Love those curls. I'm so happy for everyone - even the cats. They are going to love showing how they run the house:) Josh, I once named a dog Deoge and a cat Ceatee. Seemed easier. My present dogs are Scoop, named because her breeder owned an icecream parlor and Rags...well, he looks like he's in tatters.

Hi cindyandmocha Thanks so much for writing! I love the standard poodle. I think they are wonderful, smart, and beautiful dogs . We are very interested in obedience and agility also! They seem to be a perfect family dog and a nice choice for kids . My concern was not that I thought the standard would not "get along" with our maltese, the concern was the size difference . Some breeders thought they would be fine together, others thought I would have to worry about the poodle hurting the small dog accidentally.. stepping on her etc. along with keeping them separated when we go out. One breeder of mini's actually told me a standard as a puppy is crazy and hyper.. The reference was something about a bull in a china cabinet. Many mixed reviews on this. We love our malt and I need to think about her safety as well. ThatÂs when I was thinking about the mini.. again, I hear different opinions on them as well.. Some say they are very hyper ( mostly the breeders who breed standards) others say the best dog they ever had (mainly the breeders who breed that size) I totally understand their love for the size they breed..everyone has their own preference and I do respect that. That led me to asking pet lovers on here.. I wanted to see if anyone can share big dog/little dog and also from people who have the miniÂs & standards. after having a toy size dog, it would be so nice to have a large size dog.. As much as we love our malt, she is just a little lovable lap dog.. She hates walks, doesnÂt fetch or run with the kids in the yard ..you get the picture.. The non shedding coat of the poodle is a huge plus to me as well. I guess we need to give the size much more thought before we make a decision.. Time will tell! Thanks again for writing! Ree

dbarron, I think you were harsh too. I think it's a far more responsible pet owner who gets a dog and realizes that they are in over their head and find him a new home, than one who keeps the dog but ends up confining it because they are in over their head. While it's easy for an outsider to say "Just put in more time", that's easier said than done with two young kinds and a baby on the way. It doesn't sound like DH is on board with helping with training, which makes it even harder for the OP. Unless you've had a puppy, you don't necessarily know how much time and effort it will take. It sounds to me like the OP doesn't have a lot of dog experience, much less puppy experience. She expected her 4-month-old puppy to come when called - and didn't have a plan to enforce that command. To me, that suggests that she isn't sure how to actually teach commands to the dog, and that she doesn't have realistic expectations. OP, this is not a slam to you AT ALL - there's no shame in not knowing stuff. I'm suggesting to others on this thread that keeping this dog, at this time, is not in anyone's best interests. We got a Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppy when our twins were 7 years old. We waited until they were that old, because we knew that the pup would require a significant amount of time, not on our schedule, but on his. By that age, the children were able to assist with his training, Because of his strong herding instinct, the first thing he needed to learn was to not herd the children, and that would have been difficult if they had been a lot younger. I completely agree with handymac that a different breed would be a better fit for the OP's family, and an adult dog would be even better. But I would wait until the baby is a couple of years old before taking on a dog. OP, I'm really glad you fond a good home for your poodle!

I think some individual dogs are harder to housebreak than others, but I haven't found a strong breed correlation. In line with what Munkos said, the single most important aspect of training any animal for any behavior is consistency. Which means that if you do not want your dog peeing in the house, do not train it to pee in the house. Extinguishing a learned behavior is many many many times more difficult that learning a new behavior. Trying to get a dog to unlearn peeing in the house is much more difficult than simply training the dog to go outdoors in the first place. You may have to take the dog outside every hour, literally- toy breeds have tiny bladders, but a dog that never has the opportunity to potty in the house learns very quickly that potty is outside only. The second most important idea of training is to never underestimate the power of positive reinforcement. A dog that WANTS to perform a certain behavior is much more likely to do so than a dog that is trying to avoid punishment. When all the "training" is focused on punishing potty in the house, the dog is left to figure out what the proper behavior is. This takes a lot of time. However if the dog is rewarded for potty outside, it will quickly WANT to potty outside and will know that within a few well-timed treats. Then it simply becomes a matter of providing your dog with enough opportunities to be good by taking it out as often as possible.

My neighbs one house down have very young children and they have two toy poodles. The dogs are older than the kids. No problems that I am aware of.

I think you have good reason to be concerned with rescuing a toy. First of all, they are all too often treated like human children and spoiled rather than like dogs, setting what Cesar Millan would call "rules boundaries and limitations". This sets the dog up for a number of behavior issues and it doesn't surprise me that a lot of toys would be aggressive toward children and/or finding one that isn't totally neurotic could be challenging.

Almost a year ago, I began the arduous task of finding a breeder for a pretty uncommon breed. I joined a mailing list for the people that had years of experience in the breed's community and I asked them who of the breeders I found were reputable. They even had a breed association website which posted all the litters that were happening in the world at that point from registered member breeders which do the testing and all that. So that's how I found my breeder. You may ask someone who is their breeder then ask the breeder what they do with the dogs like health testing... cerf, ofa, all of that which applies. If showing the dog is important to you I guess you need to talk about that. And when puppies are very young it's important that breeders expose them to people and have people handle them and expose them to interesting sights and sounds. I'd imagine there's quite a bit of competition in the toy poodle breeding, maybe you can even find a breeder who teaches the puppies some basic obedience commands by the time their ready to leave. It's not the easiest of processes and frankly I don't think it can get any easier than adoption but adopting isn't for everyone. You aren't starting with a blank slate. Puppies are a giant pain in the rump with all the training and socialization you must do. At least the good thing is you know that with a puppy that training and socialization is getting done.

Have you gone to AKC site, toy breeds, poodles, breeder referal? They are often listed by State.
