I've made a decision
Comments (14)Oh, yes, dear Cathy - time to say STOP THE MADNESS! I brought in a few more PVS eggs, but left the rest outside. They're just going to have to make it or not. I also quit bringing in the BST eggs, too. They are laying eggs on the tiniest stalk (no foliage) of fennel, so there will be no food for them. This has been a record bounty year for butterflies here in Oklahoma. I don't think we EVER get this many. If we had, they would have just layed eggs on the small amount of A. clematitis that I have had in my yard for 4 years now. I have gotten out and pinched the A. clematitis and the tomentosa and they are growing new basal and side growth. But, it's nowhere near what I would need to feed all of the cats that will hatch (or not). It is fun and enjoyable, raising butterflies. But when you get all frazzled just thinking about what the rest of the day will bring, it's time to reevaluate the purpose. The bugs and predators are abundant this year. Something needs to feed them, too, because they DO have their place in nature. Mother Nature knows best and we are actually intervening. If the population was threatened, I would feel differently, but I don't think it is, unless you have got Regal Fritillaries or some such declining butterfly population. Butterflies have made it for millions of years - wow! That boggles even my mind! I think they'll make it a few more. Also, unless you're tagging the Monarchs for research purposes, I wouldn't worry about it so much. We do what we can with what we have. If I don't have my wits about me, I'm likely to not be of much help to the butterflies, my family, anyone or anything else. You're a dear, Cathy, and we all love you here, but raising butterflies should be enjoyable and enlightening. If you're feeling discouraged about it, it's no longer either of those things. Comments (6)The drama continues... Apparently, in addition to "are koi the best for this solution" the shopkeeper also fudged a bit over "do I need to have a covered container?" The next morning, 4 of them were on the ground outside, jumped for whatever reason - mainly because it was just a terrible environment for them, I assume. One was still moving, so I cleaned him as best I could and put him back in, the others got a short ceremony and disposal. He bounced back a bit, but my wife and I decided that this just wasn't going to work. We either had to return these remaining guys, dispatch them all, or ... well, I now have a 40 gallon tank sitting in a hallway, filling that weird spot that nothing seemed to work in. The remaining two (the 4th jumper, unfortunately passed the next day) and a pair of plecos are now the talk of the house, and a source of unending amusement for our cats. They are already getting used to our presence when I feed them - the bolder of the two was willing to eat a pellet right up against my open hand. And I've started plans on the pond for next year. Just what I need - another obsession. :) Incidentally, I did not buy the aquarium from the pet shop that sold me the fish - he's lost my business, although I shouldn't be surprised if any consumer pet shop did the same thing they're not hobbyists, they're salespeople trying to make quota, and have always been covered under "caveat emptor."...See MoreI've got my cat on a diet.
Comments (7)Basik, I'd recommend getting a no-carb cat food to feed your cat. There are many formulations out there in all different price ranges. If you feed a cat strictly a "people food" diet, the cat will not get the nutrients it requires. Taurine is one of the most important ones. There are formulas for weight loss as well but if you feed a grain free food, you'll see a difference in her weight. Feed no more than the recommended amount and use set feeding times. I feed my cat a combination of Primal Pet raw and Blue Buffalo Wilderness dry. Stop feeding the treats! Those are nothing but junk! If you want to feed a treat, get dried chicken or turkey breast. Make your cat do something for the treat; use a feather toy and have her chase it. Teach her some tricks that have exercise built in (fetch is good) so she's working for it. I play tag, fetch and hide and seek with my cat. He runs around like a silly goof and really enjoys the one on one time. He knows when I should stop work and will pester me to play hide and seek. He really enjoys the activity!...See MoreI've tried a million blues and still can't get it right
Comments (14)Yaya - thanks for the link! I do love that, but DH died laughing when I showed him the price tag. I did order a color card so I can see the colors in person for my next project. Lukkiirish - Yes, the two we're debating between are actually grays with a bluish tone. I definitely can't do all blue, but the grays are much nicer. Nadine - Ooh, I can definitely see blue in both of those! Lovely rooms. I think we've decided (meaning DH has the nerve to take a stand on this one design issue - LOL) and are going with the Nimbus Gray. We'll just do the tiny bathroom first and see what we think. Our bedroom is packed with boxes of tile and fixtures for the new bathroom, and I don't really feel like moving all that around just to paint the bedroom first. If we hate it on the bathroom walls, then I may take the gallon back and have it lightened a bit and try that instead. Thank you for all the ideas and suggestions!...See Moreannzgw
