I don't know what to tell you, honestly. Here's the deal...if you really do not feel you can afford to spend money on paint, then, you can't. Once money runs out, it's gone and it doesn't matter whether you like what you have or not, you have to live with it. And some people really like the faux finishes. Plus, sometimes a photo doesn't tell the whole picture. But I do not care for how it turned out. The photos on my monitor do look like someone just used leftover paint and stopped. If you liked it yourself, I don't think you would have asked for honest opinions, so I must conclude that you are not pleased either. You sound just like me 2 years ago, when I bought the molding and the stain and the antique gold rub n buff to do picture molding around my big bathroom plate glass mirror. We had spent all our money on tile, new sinks, new faucets, and a new light fixture for my master bath. I had seen where people did the molding around the mirror to punch it up and give it a new look. Well, I stained and I did the gold metallic. DH cut the molding for me. I bought some glue to glue it to the mirror. Then, for the next few weeks, I tried to convince myself that I had NOT just sent my bathroom back about 3 decades into a 70's vibe. Finally, I gave up and told DH how much I hated it. We had to wait a bit till I had money to do a couple of antique copper Pier One mirrors and a matching light, but the finished result is a much nicer look.
My advice to you, is to either find a way to paint that entire room in a pretty shade that you love, then, do your chair rail and move the furniture in. Or else, move the furniture back, save your money and wait till you can give it your full attention again.

I think Redbazel gave a great opinion. I too am not crazy about the faux finish part - but perhaps the walls will feel different when all the furnishings and fabrics are in the room. What does the furniture look like - what is the bedding like? What look are you trying to create?

If you like the green on the upper wall, do you have any of that color left? Could you mix just white and that green to get a softer shade, and put that below? Or, have you checked out the 'oops' paints at the home centers that are often sold for $5.00 a gallon - you might find another color to work below.

But again, it may have a whole different feel depending on what is coming in as furniture, bedding and decor. Can you share that with us?

Ok, honesty...I don't like sponge finishes. But my mom would LOVE this in her house. She's done sponge finishes in her rooms and it's her thing. My brother did something similar in his bathroom, but I wouldn't have it in my house.
But, that's me. I painted my hallway two shades of bright yellow stripes, and my mother nearly plotzed when she saw it.

I guess I could critique more if I knew what you were planning to do with furnishings, etc.

We actually did these same colors in a faux finish on our home office walls several years ago. Basically we started out with a green, didn't like it, put a pink over it, then finished up with a white. It was ok for a year or so, but we soon grew tired of it.

In fairness, the distracting blue painter's tape makes it kind of hard to form a definite opinion BUT...there is something sort of Monet-esque about what has been done so far that I have to say I like, and I don't as a rule like faux paint finishes. The technique is actually better than a lot of the faux finishing I've seen in person. It's got a rather nice airy-cloudy feel to it that is kind of interesting. It just needs to be completed. I think it could form the setting for a nice space, given the right things.

That faux finish is done fabulously well. I think it depends on how well it goes with what's in it too. I wonder if the green is a little strong. Maybe a more pastel green would not compete with the faux finish which is beautiful!

I was expecting something splotchy and amateurish after reading your post. But you've actually done a beautiful job of blending your colors. It looks very well executed.

How it looks in the end result will depend on what you put with it.

I suspect that because you asked, you're not feeling really pleased with your work at this point? Why do you think that is? Is it the colors? Are you working from an inspiration picture you could share? If money were not an object, what would you do with that wall?

I think you could get away with it in a baby's room but otherwise, and with a stained trim, I think it's tough to work with depending on the rest of the room. But look how much better it looks trimmed up!

I'd find an inexp paint in the giveaway area that people talk about here -- maybe Home Depot has one or Lowes or another paint store. That's where the paint was mixed wrong for a customer or something, so it's dirt cheap.

For next time -- You might have gotten a useable beige by mixing all the colors together : )

I'm assuming the final job is going to look like squirrel's first picture once it's finished, I would say it looks fine. Looks soft and clean. Considering you don't want to buy any more paint, you did a fine job with what you had.

Count me in as one who thinks you did an outstanding job with the faux finish. I've done several rooms of it in years past for myself or others and know working with the colors you have there could not have been easy. So often doing faux in distinct colors like that can end up creating a color not seen on any rainbow before - you did a fine job of keeping them from forming into that! ;) Like kim2007, I immediately thought of a Monet (I got to see a Monet exhibit years ago at the Art Institute in Chicago and it was captivating). I'm kind of curious to know what tool(s) you used to achieve that look (doesn't appear to me like a sponge was involved ;)
