help with bedskirts

Hi, I hope this is the right forum to post this question in. I usually post in the bathroom forum (when I post at all) but I couldn't ask this question there.

I am looking for a bedskirt for my queen-size sleigh bed. It has a 17 1/2" drop. It will need to cover the box spring, which is visible (even though the bed has side rails), and go down to the floor, to hide the storage boxes I am going to put underneath. I want some shade of cream, but the cream bedskirts I am finding are actually two-toned - white fabric that covers the box spring and cream fabric that goes to the floor. Is if possible to get a ~17" all cream bedskirt? Or should I just put a cream-colored fitted sheet over the box spring and get one of those bedkirts that you tack on with those screw pins? I would prefer to get one that is all one piece, but I am not finding it. Any help?

Thanks - that was quick! Of course, I am being picky, and don't like the ruffled/eyelet/jaquard ones. There was one plain queen-size box-pleat skirt in there though. I had hoped to get out of this without spending over $50, but that is looking unlikely. I guess I am cheap, in addition to being picky. Bad combination, no?

There are many varieties of detachable bedskirts available! Also have a look at Bed Bath & Beyond, Linens and Things, Cuddledown, The Company Store. Or just google "detachable bedskirts". We've had various kinds and personally, I prefer the velcroed ones over the elastic ones. You can even find a system that has a sheet that goes under the top mattress, to which you attach the bedskirt. I ordered one of those, custom-made, from Cuddledown and it worked wonderfully. But then we upgraded to a king-size mattress...

Hi....I have attached a link to a discussion on this forum in 2009 about this very subject. I have since made 2 bedskirts, a king and a queen. I tooke the existing bedskirt off and sewed velcro along the edges of the top just above where the skirt falls down. I then sewed the other part of the velcro to the top of the skirt I made. I put the old with velcro skirt back on the bed and then attached the new skirt with the velcro. So far they have both stayed on without any problems, even in changing the sheets. One of your questions was how to measure your fabric. If you are using 45" wide fabric, just cut it "longways" so you get two pieces about 22 1/2 wide. You will probably only need a drop of 18-20 inches from the top of your box spring to the floor. Hope this makes sense. LOL. Anyway, I just measured both sides and the bottom and used half that measurement, allowing for the wrap at the corners and a small wrap at the head of the bed. Hemmed all sides, attached the velcro, voila....a bedskirt. I have only made straight tailored skirts but the next one I plan to gather, it will just take more fabric. The corners at the foot of the bed are tricky, I just wrapped the fabric around and kinda overlapped it. It covers the corners and stays put. Also, with the velcro on the old bedskirt, to change the look and match whatever quilt I have on the bed, all I have to do is make a new drop and attach. No more lifting the mattress to remove replace the bed skirt. Hope this helps you with your project.Good luck! You will need: One fitted bottom sheet (used or brand new) Washable fabric pen Fabric for bedskirt that is 2.5 to 3 times the size of the mattress (2 long sides + 1 short side) as you will want a fuller skirt Sew on Velcro that is the length of 2 long sides + 1 short side Thread to match fabric If you purchase a new fitted sheet, pre-wash it to remove the sizing. Place fitted sheet on the box spring. Draw a line, using the fabric pen along both sides and one end. Using a yard-stick will probably make this easier to accomplish. Remove sheet from box spring and sew the "hook" part of the Velcro to the sheet along the drawn line. Create your bedskirt from the fabric. Hem top and bottom and all sides. Gather the fabric and pin it on to the "loop" part of the Velcro. Sew fabric to Velcro. Next time that you want to redecorate, buy new fabric and more Velcro. You will only need to loop part because you will be able to attach the new skirt to the fitted bedskirt that already has the hook part on it.

I would suggest you go to the sewing forum -- they can talk you through it. Making a bed skirt is easy easy, rewarding and fun. If you think you don't know how to sew or don't want to sew, maybe you shouldn't try it. However, if you have a measuring tape and a sewing machine and fabric you love, you can do it.

Here's an option since you have a bed with wood side rails. Get a pretty fitted sheet to put over the box spring. Measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of the side rail just below the ledge the slats sit on and get a bedskirt that length or a little longer - should have plenty of room with a conventional-size bedskirt. Detach the skirt from the center flat bit and, if you have to, trim a bit off the top to get the right length. If there are pleats, put a few hand stitches in to secure the pleats in place below your cut line before cutting. Sew or glue (use heavy-duty washable fabric glue) the soft side of a strip of velcro along the top edge of your bedskirt, on the right side of the fabric. Velcro tends to be cheaper if you buy it by the yard at a fabric store.

This next bit is easiest if you can remove the mattress and box spring and work from the inside of the frame. Using a staple gun, staple the hook side of the velcro to the inside of the side rails and footboard along that ledge the slats sit on. Stick the two pieces of velcro together (if your skirt has pleats, make sure they're centered on each side) and tah-daaah, you now have a bedskirt. You could just staple the fabric to the frame if you wanted but if you use velcro you can take it off to wash or change the skirt easily.
