'Mom, can Santa bring me a dog?' (long)
Comments (77)Jo, WonderWeiner never bit anyone, ever, wasn't even nippy. On the other hand, Elery's chihuahua has bitten me twice, he's a PIA. The only other dog who has ever bitten me was a black lab and now the neighbor across the street from my stepmom has a very aggressive black lab, Animal Control has already been called twice for dog bites, one more time and the dog gets put to sleep. My Grandmother had a cocker spaniel who was a "submissive wetter". Everytime he got excited, he peed on the floor, very annoying habit. So, I'm not sure those things are "breed traits" they may be particular to specific dogs. I like big dogs, Amanda has a lab and St. Bernard Cross that's smart, friendly, but a little over protective of the kids. She will grab the back of their shirts when they try to slide down the slide because she doesn't like them doing things she thinks may not be safe. She doesn't like them to use sleds either, LOL. However, I do not like big, stupid, slobbery dogs, the ones who sit and slobber, or dance around saying "yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll fetch that ball a million times, whatever you want, just to make you happy, yeah, yeah, yeah". They all have their own personalities and you have to find the one that "fits". And, as dlynn said, if I went to the pound regularly, I'd have a LOT of pets. Sigh. I just couldn't leave them there. Comments (7)My Aleksander had bad allergies that were mostly controlled with diet and immunotherapy shots. But he still had issues during certain times a year. I'd give him about a 1 mg/kg dose twice a day, then skip a couple of days, and if he needed it give it again. Pretty much just as needed. But I didn't have to give it continuously after I started the immunotherapy. Aleksander had severe liver reactions to pred- his ALKP went up over 10 times normal even when I dosed him as above, and it lasted for months afterwards. But in the long run, he did better with a short quick burst of pred rather than long term lose doses. And his liver was never truly hurt by it, just messed up his bloodwork....See MoreHow long to leave dog without pottying
Comments (30)Our 2 1/2 year old dog (shepherd/lab mix) is home alone all day, from about 7:15 AM to sometimes as late as 6:30. We kept her crated until about 9 months of age, but after that she had free-run of the house and she has not had a single problem/accident (although it's only been the past few months that we don't get home until 6:30-- prior to that, I was always home by 5:15). She has a full bowl of food and water when we leave in the morning, but she NEVER touches either all day, until we get home after work... So maybe she knows she'll have to hold it, so she doesn't drink or eat?? I have no idea. But I DO know that when we let her out after work, she usually does a little running around the yard before she pees, so I don't get the impression that the need to go is critically urgent. I guess every dog is different... I would suspect that larger dogs would have an easier time holding it than smaller dogs, but that's just a hunch......See MoreLook Out! Prednisone!
Comments (15)After seeing the effects it did on our female dog, no way would I take that at all, it was horrible watching what it did to her, we had to have water for her to drink at all times as she couldn't make it otherwise. She bloated up so bad. She couldn't stop eating and demanding food all the time. She lost her fur, she lost her energy, it was awful and we had to put her down after all. Poor her....See Moretoomuchglass
