Can you see any signs of blood? And is Tommy eating? If he isn't, I would be concerned about possible internal injuries. If the answer to the first question is yes and/or the answer to the second question is no, I would have him seen by a vet, soon.

We kept a few chickens many years ago, and a stray dog once caught one of them, pulling out feathers and leaving a big wound on its back. Our neighbor's son yelled and chased the dog and saved her. A vet gave me some sulfur powder to prevent infection and the hen healed up very well. But standing in one area all day doesn't sound good. If he had no injuries, you'd think that after 3 days he would be over the shock. To repeat, I think that by this time not eating (if he isn't) could mean something serious. I hope he will be all right.

No, I see no sign of blood. I am not for sure if he is eating or not. I can't get close to him, he is wild sort of. He runs if anyone gets near him, plus I have nothing to put him in to take him anyplace and he would go wild and spur or peck someone! So I am hoping for the best.

You said that you have him in a pen right now so can't you tell if he's eating or not?
We had a rooster that got attacked by dogs several times over the years. He wouldn't let us catch him either except once when he did get mauled pretty bad. The vet gave me a shot of antibotics to give him (as he shook his head and laughed at me). Gave it to him under the wing where the skin was thinner.
If he's eating and and still running from you he'll probably be fine with some time.

I think you need to have him checked by a vet. He could have broken wings, internal damage or an infection from the dog bite.

You can put him in a cardboard box if you don't have a dog or cat crate. Since you have him in a pen, you can catch him by throwing a blanket over him. You should be able to put him in the box from the blanket or you can grasp his body and wings with your left arm and hold his beak with your right hand to place him in a container.

Right now he probably needs antibiotics and extra heat.

Chickens can't see well at night, can they? Does he get up on a roost then? If he can't see too well or goes to sleep, you might be able to sneak up and pop a blanket or large carton over him or something.

Tommy is doing better today and out walking around. No, I can't tell if he is eating because the pen I have him in is rocked and I have been giving him bird seed.

Hope Tommy continues to do better. My parents had a pet rooster once - he was very comical.

Berk-can you put the feed in a container of some kind so you will be able to tell if he is eating?

I have a few chickens (started with six, now down to two). One got attacked by a coyote several years ago (not killed) and had bite marks on her back and lots of missing feathers where the coyote grabbed her. She made it through the night, aborted eggs for a week, and gradually got better. So, your chicken will probably be fine if he's made it this far.

Last summer I had to nurse one of the others back to health twice. I had to keep her in a box in the house to keep the others from picking on her. During that time, I fed her canned cat food to build her strength. Chickens love cat food, and it has lots of protein, so it's good for them. It's also easy to tell if they're eating it.

So I suggest you put a can of cat food in the pen with Tommy. It might also be a good idea to get antibiotics for him. I got powdered antibiotic from our local feed store and mixed it into my chickens' water container. It was inexpensive, and I didn't have to take the chicken to the vet (most vets don't know very much about chickens anyway--mine didn't).

You need to realize that unless you keep Tommy in a coop all the time, he will probably get hurt again. A free-range chicken is easy prey for many animals, such as raccoons, possums, hawks, cats, and dogs. (Three of my chickens were killed by coons, even though they are in a fenced enclosure.) It's not fair to your "pet" rooster to let your dog attack him or fight with him.

LOL, first of all , it is Tommy that starts 99% of the fights and I have another dog and a cat and they won't even make eye contact with Tommy for fear of a fight.
Tommy is doing great today. I got some of that powdered antiobotic stuff from the Vet and he is on the road to recovery and I have found out he loves my bologna salad I make. All it is is ground up bologna, sweet pickles and mayo!
Yes, there is a good chance he will get hurt again, this is the first time in 2 years he has been hurt, so he has been doing good.
I had read once time that chickens where very smart and had a good memory, time will till if that is correct or not.

Glad to hear that Tommy is on the mend! Chickens are pretty resilient creatures. I couldn't believe that mine survived being grabbed by a coyote. My chickens will be 8 years old this April.

I'm not surprised that Tommy likes your bologna salad. Everyone is always surprised when I tell them how much my chickens love meat. You should see them fight over a pork chop bone! :)

I had a pet rooster growing up. He was one of those fluffy little easter chicks. My border collie at the time adopted the chick who I suppose believed BC Bob was his "mother" and followed him everywhere in the house and yard. He ate dog food right at the bowl with the dog and would follow right along when I took Bob out for a walk. Finally grew up into a big leghorn rooster and crowed in the mornings.
