Even though we have yet to hear from the "COMMITTEE", we began working on the plan. Today we unloaded and spread 60 (2 cubic feet) bags of mulch. I planted a few pansies.

Lowes's had the 12 pack carriers for $1 a carrier. I picked the best six I could find. They are past prime, but once I clean them up they will be fine. Last year we had such a cool rainy spring and summer that my pansies bloomed for about 5 months.

I didn't have the strength to come in and get the camera. It took all I had to eat my hamburger. Now that's bad. I'll crawl out there in the morning and take a couple.

Dear Cousin Kathy ~ I'd say that you did enough for one day and a nice good night's sleep, and watering the pansies to morrow will do wonders for your heart and soul. I'm wishing you a full carpet of pansies starting now and lasting a good 5 months of pleasure for everyone, convincing the 'committee' that front yards need NOT be green slivers of grass.

OHMYGOSH, 60 bags!? That's a lot of work for sure!!!
Take it easy in the morning! It may take a while before you "get all the kinks out" of your bod!

The pansies will be wonderful and will be something the committee can recognize!

Intersting, ethnobothany...;-) Indeed the world loves you or strikes back with every heart beat- but that's only one way to put it. That is, knowledge, in relationship, in human relationship, is DESTRUCTIVE. I'm not sure though if georgeiii is seeing human relationships and the related realm from such perspective, though. I may be wrong, but I doubt as well that there are many other forum members that care about such rather unusual philosophical and sociological perspectives. I believe they primarily want there screwed-up setups and PH to improve and get sound and safe LOL. In half a century of existence, (how philosophical does that sounds anyway LOL) I've learned only a few things that I am certain of. And one of those most certainly is: people will only believe what they want to believe, only accept what they are ready to, only listen to what and to whomever they chose to (no mater if it's a genius or some lunatic) as well. No matter how "you" put it, no matter if it's nicely said or bluntly shouted at their face, true or false, most honest you can get it or an infamous lie, most objectively described or just a very personal impression. A bit like with plant physiology, people "take only up" what they like to hear and grab at that moment in time and with their very own attitude and state of mind. That is why I stick with a more simplified philosophy since a while: I primary care what I have to say and what's actually on my mind, not anymore what others may or may not think of it. In fact I still may try to not offend or compromise them intentionally, but I actually cannot anticipate what others may like or not like, understand or not - hence accept or reject. Sooner or later you find out where the more adventurous spots, the "no go places" and the play safe areas are. If it doesn't bring you at your goal, simply turn to an opportunist or an hypocrite, or even better, a unlucky combination of both - and there you go and it works like a charm until you wake up from that bad dream too. Some people evolve by trying them one after the other, but I recommend to drop the "freaky douche attitude" though, I believe that's the worst call ever! LOL

Don, he wasn't my first parrot....He could be likened to finally getting a Porsche, if you're into cars. I brought him home when he was 5 weeks old.... about mid-April, 1999. Here is his baby picture when he came home. I'd been going over to my friend's house (the breeder), to hand feed him when she pulled him from the nestbox. I continued to hand feed him, with what is called "abundance feeding" so he weaned himself, at 22 weeks old, without feeling deprived. He weighed 600 grams as a well fed baby boy, and he weighs that now as an adult. He has beautiful feathers, no fat, great muscle tone especially in his breast which allows him to fly efficiently.....but consider that birds are so aerodynamic, with hollow bones, hollow feathers, they eat moderately frequently, also poop frequently and do it almost EVERY time before they take flight....which is a clue to imminent flight, by the way.

Thanks, everyone, this house has been a lot of work, and Elery and I are doing most of it ourselves, so it's taking a while. So, the kitchen is not finished. The cabinets are in, walls are drywalled, painted and trimmed, the countertops are on and the appliances installed. Cherry trim and laminate on the floor, but the window on the East overlooking the water needs to be replaced, and it was a "special order", so I can't finish the backsplash until the window is installed. And we still have the white battleship shaped homemade island with pink ceramic tile top sitting right in the middle. It'll stay, kind of, but it will be covered with the same stuff the cabinets are made of and have a butcherblock top. We tore out a wall between the kitchen and dining room to make one big room.... Right now I'm working on the pantry, tearing out old shelves and replacing them with chrome racks and laying tile. Supper tonight was pasta with Mama's Meatballs, a red pepper sauce, garlic bread and broccoli. I have half of my cooking stuff there and half here, so the garlic bread was from a local grocery store. I would approach the question of which tree to plant as "which conifer can handle a reasonable amount of shade (but that a good number of hours of direct sun wont hurt), that also looks like an Xmas tree". Upon first look that does not appear like an ideal situation (it obviously isn't, that fence height is a good % of the final height you want your tree to be), but as mentioned earlier it appears to get full sun in the later afternoon which have the strongest rays. Having said that, I think it is more than workable to get something that you will be happy with. My experience has shown that norway spruce are a reasonable amount easier to grow that colorado blue spruce(handle shade better, etc). Now you are faced with the dilemna that 50% of the questions on here revolve around (I needed a (row of) tree(s) yesterday that is 20' tall, 9' wide already and wont grow anymore). If you are willing to wait 20+ years then go buy a small reasonably priced smaller (slower growing) conifer, be patient and wait (eventually it may/will grow bigger than you want, perhaps much bigger than you want) Or (if there is even a nursery around you that sells older (and larger) slower growing conifers, you could shell out big big big big bucks and get something bigger so you dont have to wait as long. What Im learning about this hobby is that it is a lot about being patient(or having deeeeep pockets, but even then still being very patient). Im not the best person to recommend specific trees, not much experience. Ive got a lot of basic conifers- norway, colorado, black hills, serbian, canadian hemlocks, etc but not so many fancier/slower growing ones (and Ive only been into conifers/trees for 3 years) Canadian Hemlocks like shade but growing them can be finicky in Ohio(and they may not have the Xmas tree look you are looking for). Actually that is way too much sun for a Canadian hemlock(at least in Ohio, up North not as much, but I would say still too much sun, even where you live). Im thinking some type of slower growing Norway spruce, but like I said, not an expert. Im sure others will offer specific suggestions. The Norway spruce is the most bullettproof conifer I have met. Ive got a bunch planted in shady areas. They dont fill out as much when in shade but they still look great to me and plenty "Christmas-tree like".

Now that the tarps are gone, I doubt you'll have much problem with the HOA. The plan is now pretty obvious. Clearly you are planting what will become a beautiful garden. I recently read that landscaping can up the value of a property by 5-15%.

Personally, my experience has been that everywhere I put in a garden, several neighbors soon followed suit. Gardening is contagious, and sometimes it gets competitive, too!

I hope you've recovered from your 60 bags of mulch orgy. I prescribe a hot bath followed by your favorite cold beverage, a cozy chair, and a stack of garden magazines or books.

Last night I filled the tub as full as possible and soaked for quite a while. I woke up at 3:30 a.m. not feeling too great. I got up and took a pain pill. It has been almost 2 years since I have had to take any. It was April 2006 when I had back all my hardware installed.

Thank you kindly. I like that "plant on" too.

Happy, what part of TX are you near?

I went to the habitat for humanity store today to see if I would luck out and find pavers. They did not, but my oh my they have everything in the world. Old doors, new doors, old windows etc.

It is a 57 mile round trip, so I doubt I will do that very often.
