Not really, unfortunately. However if your dog is good, the vet may be able to remove the growths with local anesthesia. That removes the risk of general anesthesia, which is higher for a dog with Cushings. My friend just did this for her own dog, who is a 15 year old Golden also with health problems that make general anesthesia risky. The growths have a better chance of coming back because it won't be possible to get great surgical margins with local anesthesia, but the vet would be able close the wound and stop the bleeding/oozing.

Thanks for the info, Meghane. The vet cauterized a few but it really didn't help. Some of his growths crust over and stop bleeding but as soon as he's bathed they ooze even more. I asked the vet about local anesthesia but unfortunately some of the sores are too close to joints where the skin is too thin. I guess I'm grasping at straws.

It's getting closer to having to make that dreadful decision. Ah! It's never gets any easier and I've had several dogs over my life time.

I'm sorry that you might have to make that awful decision. A few days after Christmas I had to have my golden put down. It never does get easier. Even though I got another dog a few days ago I still miss her very much. Angie

Thanks, Edna. I had adopted my adult golden from a shelter and she had a good life with me, and I with her, for over 7 years. Chip,the one I just adopted, is 4, part border collie. The lady at the shelter said he would never be adopted since he had lost so much weight and scared of everyone. I knew, then, that he had to come home with me. Turns out he a very loving dog and now I can't imagine being without him.

My golden had those growths, too, but the vet could remove them without putting her under. I remember gently brushing her and once in awhile one would bleed. I would rush her to the vet and he would remove that one. Finally she could no longer walk without her legs giving out, had a hard time getting in and out of the house. She seemed be in constant pain. We had her on pain medication but it got to the point nothing helped so the kindest thing to do was to put her down. I held her as she was euthanized and thought I would never stop crying. I decided never to get another dog but here is Chip. For me my house is not a home without a dog.

I guess it's time I use my real name. I have been using Angie as my name but that was my golden's name.

One of the vets I used to work for would freeze some of them depending on size and location.
Maybe you could ask if that is an option?

groomingal, they did that to the one on his paw. It didn't do much good and still growing. The sore on his paw is what's causing me great concern as he limps sometimes and I know it's causing him so much irritation. It looks very much like an open wound from a burn.

I'm so frustrated. I've done so much research hoping I could find SOMETHING topical to treat it so he has some degree of relief. Otherwise he's doing just fine.

I'm calling the vet.
