Kilz or BIN....question about using outdoors.

Hello! In our attached garage we need to first paint a stain killer on the ceiling because there is some discoloration from the pine boards in the attic. Do Kilz or BIN come in interior/exterior formulas, or is it just one product that can be used either inside or outside?

I ask because although it's an attached garage, it gets quite cold and hot in the garage because it's unheated. We live in Indiana, and in the winter we can get sub-zero temperatures.

And can BIN or KILZ be used as a primer, or will I need to apply an actual primer over them? And then when I paint, again....should I use an exterior paint instead of interior?

I trust the people on this forum more than I do the employees at the paint store, so I'm asking here. Thanks!

I have always treated attached garages like interior areas. We have always painted the walls with interior paint too....it's not like you have rain and snow getting in there. I would probably use CoverStain on the wood though. Kilz, CoverStain and BIN are all real primers that are also stain killers....you do not need to use another primer on top of them.

2nd-ing PG here on Zinsser's Coverstain!

Forget Kilz...the Zinsser line is better.

Indiana?!!? He&&, I'm in Fargo, ND! We'll sometimes see MINUS 30!

Zinsser's BIN is a great primer, but TOO much temp-change can be too much for it. BIN is a little more "brittle", and meant only for Interior projects, and "spot"-priming on Exteriors, like over resinous wood-knots only.

Yep, Interior paint is fine in the garage. Since the garage doesn't see direct weathering, Interior paints are fine. I'd use a Satin sheen, possibly Semi-gloss.

(I'm at a pretty busy upscale/independant paint/hardware/decorating/furniture store here. People often come to us though, after receiving "incomplete" advice at some of the "Boxes"...;-)
We dropped the Kilz primers, and just handle Zinsser's line, C2 primers, & a couple of ACE & XIM primers.)

You wont have much vc in 4/6 weeks. Worms take a little while to get started (a week or so) and at first they don't eat half their wait in food. What have you got in the bed for bedding? They do well on newspaper strips, small pieces of cardboard, a few rotten leaves, 1 handfull of garden dirt, and a little bit of blended up cantalope or something sweet like that on top of the bedding and covered with a little newspaper to keep the flys and bugs off of it will do to get them started. Don't leave any food for the worms out where flys and bugs can lay eggs on it as you will be raising maggots instead of worms if you do. You and the daughter are going to want to feed them every day and you will probably kill them if you don't resist the need to feed the new "pets". If they have good bedding they can go without "food" for weeks without any problem. Make sure that the have eaten all of what you gave them last time before you give them any more! Best to even give them a day after they finish it before you feed them again. Newbies always kill their first batch, mabye you can be the first to keep them alive. You will also be wanting to see them often, keep the room in dim light when you want to see them and you will be able to get a good look without disturbing them to much. If the worms want to leave they will go right through that screen as they can stretch out and get very thin. Keep the bin in a lighted area for a day or so to keep them in the bedding till they get used to their new home. Good luck!

Olychic, Lowes sells Valspar, Behr is at HD. I used a custom colored Behr in the two-story LR and kitchen in our old house. We lived there for seven years and before we put it up for sale, we had all the walls washed. Cleaned up beautifully and looked brand new. We were on a budget and it suited our purposes well. We had light coming in from all angles and, in a situation like that, maybe the full spectrums aren't as important as they would be in a room with one directional light. I used C2 in the main bath and loved it, Ralph Lauren suede in the MB and got so many compliments. Powder room had a short lived line from Lynette Jennings (don't recall who made the base). Her palette was just lovely. I think the color was Thyme and I sure liked it better than the Svelte Sage I have in the hall bath now. There's a paint for every budget and expectation.

linelle - Painting the DW was pretty painless. DH removed the door panel, which also has the sides on it on my KA model, and I took it out back and scrubbed it with soapy water, rinsed well and let dry. Then, I lightly scuffed with fine grit sandpaper like 180 or 220 and wiped down with a dry, lint free cloth. Sprayed first coat and let dry, then sprayed second coat and let dry. DH put the panel back on and you can see the result below. As I said though, I want to try and see if I can paint the plastic part at the top with that Krylon paint that fuses with plastic so it won't wear off. The door latch is in that part (obviously) and gets touched a lot so I want something that will last. The appliance epoxy I used was a Rustoleum product. It looks so much better painted than the white is used to be, but not nearly as nice as an actual SS DW will when I can afford it. I'm planning to paint my fridge also with the same paint at some point as it is all white too. Much bigger job than just the DW door panel, however. Before: After with partial backsplash install.

Since no one has yet replied to your opening posting I will offer things for you to think about... What kind of worms did you get? Africans are okay with those temperatures... red wigglers? not so much. If the bin temperatures are exceeding the air temperature then either its in the sun, lacking sufficient air movement or too much greens and it is hot composting. If you've got a lot of garden trimmings try composting in a traditional compost pile... then after its cooled down you can feed a portion to the worms when they require more food. Bottom line: excessive heat will kill your worms. If you do have red wigglers, strive for temperature in the 70s... bin temps above 84F will definitely stress them. Fly larvae? What kind of fly we talking 'bout? Bottle flies? Blow flies? I would not want these in my house. Larva eventually become adult flies... If you are referring to Black Soldier Fly larva, then they will not be a bother in the bin, however I doubt you'd want the adults in your house... but really, since they would need earth (actual soil) to burrow in to transform into the adult (pupate), you're more likely to find dead larva lying around every where in the house as they dried out after escaping the bin in search of soil to burrow into. Outdoors the BSF larva would not be an issue, however know that the larva are voracious eaters and will thus compete with your worms for food with the downside being the BSFL consume much more and yet return far less of it as castings, which wouldn't be an issue if you used them to feed to chickens or fish however if they instead escape the bin to pupate then all that nitrogen (as protein) etc will be lost from the castings left in the bin. BSFL can slip through tiny cracks seeking the earth they need to pupate in to transform into the adult form (metamorphosis)... this stage simply CANNOT be achieved in the bin, they MUST escape to burrow into earth. Now for suggestions... I would suggest doing whatever you need to do to maintain bin temperatures below 80F... even if you have to dig a hole in deep shade (backyard), put the bin in and cover over with either plywood or a kiddie wading pool (with an inch or so of water). Traditionally compost anything in excess of what the worms can consume and use the partial compost that has cooled to feed the worms later if need be. Finally, I suggest that unless you have a need for BSFL, you don't want them in your worm bin as they are very inefficient if you're trying to simply recycle garden wastes into castings. And if you have any other type fly larva in your bin... Eeeeww. Hopefully you will get other responses soon....

Thanks to you both for your help. The reason I'm really concerned about this is the fact that this garage has had a history of peeling paint off the ceiling. My mom lived in this house, and I spent many hours trying to scrape and get rid of big peeling pieces of paint off of the ceiling in this unheated garage. I would get it looking pretty good, but before you knew it, more was peeling off. Ughhh!!

I always thought the reason was that someone had painted with an interior paint not suitable for extreme temperatures. The garage did get very cold despite the fact that it was attached to the house. I don't think it was insulated (it is now, however).

So.....my husband used a sander and got off all of the remaining old paint, and now we have a new coat of drywall over it. Stains are already showing through it, and the drywallers said it was from sap from the the pine boards up in the attic. Although I don't understand that because those boards are so old.....hard to imagine they're still seeping sap.

Last night we were in a big box store (Menards in Indiana), and we got a sales person who actually was pretty good. He confirmed what you've said, and he recommended the Cover Stain also. He said it's much easier to work with (and cheaper) than the shellac-based BIN. That sounded good! After all, we don't need to cover up odors or smoke or anything like that.....just the stains.

Thank you so much....without your help I'm sure we would just have bought the KILZ because that is the brand we are familiar with.

When you say "Pine boards in the attic...", do you mean the rafter material, lumber layed-down that is stacked, or flat sheets of 4'x8's??

Or...is the whole ceiling made of pine 4x8's that were drywalled over?!

faron.....I keep forgetting to ask my husband the answer to your question. Believe it or not, I haven't been up in the attic yet. He just installed a pull-down stairway to access it.

But I think it's just the rafters, not sheets of lumber. Why do you ask? BTW, he painted the ceiling today with Cover Stain, and it did conceal all of the stains.

Fiddle-

I was so curious if boards laying FLAT were bleeding.
* 4x8's laid flat would have potentially resinous knots in direct contact with your ceiling sheetrock.
* Were your peeling areas kinda lining up with the rafter lines??
* Or...are/were they pretty random?!
* Reason I'm asking that is...boards can't bleed thru IN BETWEEN rafters!
* Another possibility...have you guys been checking for water leaks? What kind of condition are the shingles in?? Age of roofing??
