I am baffled because I have the opposite point of view entirely. Has anyone ever thought about what your ancestor Gunter in Germany was eating a thousand years ago? Probably cabbage, cabbage, cabbage, onions, garlic, barley, cabbage, pork, and turnips. How about Earnest in England?... pretty much the same. Far from food going extinct, I think there is tremendous diversity now in food production. Industrial production might require GM and capitalization of research through protection of intellectual property, but the fact remains that you are eating tomatoes, kohlrabi, six kinds of lettuce, two kinds of carrots, brussels sprouts, etc. All of those are robust and are grown as millions of mini varieties in gardens all over the world. I mean EVERYWHERE. Seed banks, seed companies, and people's dresser drawers hold huge stores of DNA, all slightly different. In five minutes, I could buy 100 different packets of seeds at the hardware store. Was that even possible in the 50s? And that is F1 or F2. Some okra farmer in Alabama has seeds produced through 50 crosses. People can and do create and study their own cultivars of darn near everything every season and then trade them internationally. How will that change? Activism is all well and good, but GM and Mxxxxxxo are small in the big picture and probably getting smaller. Remember that they have to invest millions in a cultivar just to get it to a commercial seed stage. How many cultivars can they do that with? And they and their timing are going to be wrong how often? Monsanto is not a juggernaut, it is a riverboat gambler. The bigger it gets, the bigger it bets. For better or worse, some gardener in China has a seed that is better than what Mxxxxxxo has got, and it is only a matter of time before the rest of the world finds out about it. In Japan, a single pumpkin seed can sell for hundreds of dollars. Mxxxxxxo has not moved in on that action, and it never will. The market is fuelled by enthusiasts and connisseurs. If the market gets cornered, people will immediately lose interest. Viewed in terms of sheer greed, it is in Mxxxxxxo's interest to maintain wild type specimens in environments all over the world. Even if Mxxxxxxo could sell one type of tomato seed that would make all others extinct, it would not do it. Has anyone considered that? Well, I guess that is enough. I could give 20 more examples. Viewed from a wider perspective, food diversity has never been better. And I will not be buying Mxxxxxxo stock. I should watch more TV, it sounds very entertaining.

First--no orange juice or acidy food or drink! I used to be a pediatric nurse on a floor that also had an occasional adult tonsillectomy patient. My experience was that really young children did very well after the anesthesia wore off. One of my sons was a pre-schooler and the other was in first grade when their tonsils came out. The doctor always instructed the parents of young children to keep them quiet for a week because the tonsil area is very raw post op and can bleed easily. When I told my doctor that my school age son was outside, climbing trees a week after surgery, the doc blew up at me and said I really should know better. My son felt fine but the surgeon still wanted him to be rather quiet. My kids are 37 and 40 now and the post op recovery could be different today if tonsil removal is an easier surgery in this modern era. I haven't heard of any change in the surgical procedure so I can't be certain. Patients that I privately referred to a "geriatric tonsillectomies" were any that were older than mid teen. The older the patient, the more painful. Your husband may be very uncomfortable. Adding nasal surgery to a tonsillectomy means he will be doubly uncomfortable due to nasal swelling and difficulty breathing through his nose. Poor guy! When I worked on Peds the adult patients were given Demerol while in the hospital and controlled drugs by mouth (usually codeine) when they went home. Very little children got only Tylenol. Ouch! If either you son or your husband doesn't want to eat, at least MAKE them drink. Dehydration only makes the pain worse. If they don't eat much for a week that is no big deal, but they absolutely have to stay well hydrated. Any soft food, even soggy Cherios, are fine the day after surgery. Avoid all food that is rough or scratchy. Pudding, ice cream, soup etc. are all good. Avoid all acidy foods even when the patient is feeling well and eating regular food again. My son was about a week post op and feeling fine when he ate a slice of tomato and almost choked because he was in so much pain. The acid in the tomato was strong enough to cause him real pain. Any vomiting of blood, other than old, blackish blood shortly after waking up from anesthesia (in other words, blood swallowed during surgery) is always a reason to call the doctor. Very occasionally, a patient started to bleed about a week after surgery. That time frame seemed to be when we saw the very occasional post op bleed. These patients sometimes had to return to the OR. Please--don't let this information scare you, because it is a very unusual complication. I mention it only to make you aware of the worst case scenario. One last thought-- My kids had the surgery because they had so many ear infections. I expected that immediately afte surgery the ear infections would cease. However, they bot got a few more ear infections and then never had any again. Nancy

And why do they need to put wheat gluten in dog food anyway? I'm just venting. Maybe if they didn't put all kinds a "crap" in their food we wouldn't have this problem. They were saying that even so called "organic" foods are exposed to the wheat gluten scare! Is wheat gluten really good for our dogs? Doesn't sound good to me! Sounds like something that can cause health problems to me like allergies. Dogs aren't supposed to eat wheat?! Why are dog food manufaturers putting "crap" in dog food that dogs shouldn't even be consuming? When's the last time YOU heard of wolves eating wheat? HUH? I think some common sense is in order here! No wonder so many people are starting to make their own food for their dogs.

I remember they mentioned eating bacon and coffee together for breakfast and my mother had that every morning for breakfast and she said I have to give up what I love. And I remember them mentioning weiners and so the scouts and those groups were not allowed their hotdogs and what a huge protest there was. The environment is causing alot of health issues. Frozen foods, why do'nt you talk about them, look at how many survive on frozen meals and they aren't good for you, can cause health issues like cancer of colon, etc, the chemicals are so bad.Why don't they give us good foods without all these horrible chemicals that are causing these health issues in our lives, so many of us have them and they won't get better. And eating fruits and veggies, look at how the spray foods and we get foods brought in from countries that use stuff on them we haven't for long time. They pulled years ago sprouts from our stores due to fecal matter found on too much. Bring back our farmers and growers that will grow good safe foods for us to eat, that is what we want and need in our lives, good safe foods. kathy
