I lost my Cocker Spaniel, Eirn, a few months ago. He was 15. He had advanced Cushing's plus they found a tumor in his bladder. It was an agonizing decision to let him go but the right one none the less.

We just lost our boy kitty to cancer 10 days ago. It was very, very tough- it happened very quickly and unexpectedly, it sounds like your situation was much the same, despite Jett's existing health issues.

Our girl kitty, who was his litter mate and lifelong companion of 15 years is grieving horribly. The first 3 days she would barely eat, then she started exhibiting strange behaviors (I think testing the new rank and file in the house). We are trying to go with the flow and nurture her through this. It is getting better each day, but it is tough. I think dogs grieve longer- just let the other animals know that you are there for them and give them the attention and structure they crave.

gajopa - I have a couple of things to say. Thank God Jett had you as an owner, that little one could not have had a better owner than you. That you should feel good about all you did for your pet, you went the extra mile and could have done nothing else. I hope you have no regrets, I know owners can be hard on themselves - full of self doubt and wondering if they did the right thing. I know you did everything you could and made certain the vet did everything they could. I wish there were more pet owners like you.....Sorry for your loss.

TDWW, I'm sorry about your Erin. We're never ready for them to go no matter what age they are. I had so hoped Jett would make it to 15. Cushings is not a good thing to have. I had always said I could never make the decision to let him go but when it came to him suffering I knew I had to. Yes Jett had a wonderful life. He and his sister didn't like to be left alone so we arranged our schedule so one of us was always with them.

Quasi, I'm sorry you lost your little boy. I definitely wasn't expecting it. He had been so normal until an hour before we had to let him go, but then I wouldn't have wanted him to suffer any longer. I was very concerned our little girl wouldn't eat since she's very picky about eating anyway. I was delighted when she ate a good bit of freshly cooked chicken this afternoon. She just seems sad but at least she isn't verbally grieving like the dog next door. Thanks for your concern and hugs.

Mazer, that is exactly what our vet said. No, thank goodness we don't have any regrets. We did everything possible for Jett and spared no expense for anything he needed or wanted. Jett loved his food and treats right up until the end. I appreciate your concern.

I'm fairly new to this particular forum but I feel your pain. It's never easy to lose a fur baby.

Elly, Trini, and Cat Mom, thank you so very much. It feels like there is a huge hole in my heart. Jett was the first inside pet I've ever had and it's so hard to let go. I wonder how long this intense pain will last.

The pain lasts a long time. I still mourn my bunny, Bonny, who died 20 years ago. The thing that changes is that you start to remember more good times than those last moments. But you never get over the loss.
Try to recall those good times now.

Thanks for the hugs Meghane. I can surely use some now. I'm so glad Jett didn't have to suffer any longer than the hour he did. I had convinced myself that he had a few more years so it was a terrible shock when he went so quickly. He always loved his food and did up until the end. I'm thankful Tia isn't grieving too much (or doesn't appear to be).

I can't tell you how long the pain will last....I'm not sure the intensity ever goes away. When we lost Candy in October, I could not do anything....it was a terrible shock for me..I literally just laid on the couch moping for days. I knew I had to do something. We got Tootsie seven days later. And while I still sometimes mourn for Candy and it still hurts like the day I lost her, I now have Tootsie who makes me very happy. It's hard to stay in mourning when a puppy is vying for attention and constantly looks doofy. I do sometimes feel guilty that I did not let myself mourn longer...but I think candy would have hated that. She also gave us hope. And you are right to feel glad that he did not have to suffer longer. With Candy she got an infection that was making her spine degenerate. The vet said anything could have caused it and that she was probably predisposed. She started losing control of her bowels and her limbs. Poor thing would have her paws all twisted and not even know. Anyway we took her to the vet and he gave her a shot of something. That was on Monday...During the week she seemed to regain her appetite a bit (hubby and I were cooking for her everything we could find to tempt her) By Friday she was running and jumping around...even jumped down the stairs. Then Saturday...right after the vet closed for the weekend she went downhill fast. Would not eat or drink, could barely walk and stand, and lost complete control of her bowels. Friday I thought she had made it through and was going to be alright. By Saturday afternoon I was praying she would die so I would not have to make the horrible decision. I wish I had known Friday that she was going to get worse. We would have saved her the pain and suffering and put her to sleep that much earlier. But I thought she would make it and that she had defeated another disease (she had cancer two years prior). I still feel guilty and pain but my head knows I did the right thing, even if my heart breaks because of it.

I am new to the site, but wanted to send my condolences to you and your family. I am a Vet Tech and never had to deal with Aytipical Cushings until it knocked on my own door. Though this does not lessen the pain of your loss, please know how much you and Jett have helped my friend therefore helping me; and many others through your postings. Know that the kindest gesture that you can do is to let go and ease their suffering.

Trinigemini, I'm sorry I didn't see your post. Just haven't been on the board lately. So sad what your Candy had to go through. Like you, I had hoped to not have to make the decision to let Jett go. Had it not been closing time on Friday I probably couldn't have made the decision then but I didn't want him to get worse on the weekend and not know who I was taking him to. I'm glad you're enjoying your new baby.

Chrispd, thanks you so much. I'm glad the knowledge was able to help you and hopefully others. I wonder if a lot of Vets are unfamilar with atypical like ours was. Meghane gave me wonderful, detailed information after I suspected that's what Jett had. The supplements we put him on helped a lot. He had been panting so badly that I would be up all during the night trying to make him comfortable. After about a month of being on them it decreased significantly and let both of us rest better. Thank you for letting me know this info was helpful.

I'm sure you loved him... it isn't easy to loose a pet.
