Parasite question (dogs)Meghane or anyone

I know you can see parasite(worms)in the dogs stool but I was wondering if you can actually see the eggs.Sally(basset)I think she may have some parasite.In her stool I can see something the size of salt or a grain of sand and was wondering if this could be eggs of some type of worms.Theres a good bit.She has been scooting on her butt a lot to,while I know that could be anal glands I'm thinking its parasite related.I went to clean her back end area this morning because I saw that it looked like it needed it,she doesn't want to be touched there and something very small round and yellow came away on the wet rag and I thought parsite egg.Anyway she is being treated with panacur.I'll do the 3days/3weeks/3month deal.Her stomach is gurgling alot,licking her butt to.Shes a dog that eats stuff out of the yard(feces of other dogs that come through the fence,small dogs/cats squeeze through to visit)I have to keep patrol over at least 3/4 of a acre to pick up other peoples pets poop)I rathered do that than leave it out for her to get into,if she doesn't eat it she rolls in it.Thoughts please about the eggs.She hasn't been in to the vet but I was told it was ok to treat her if I thought she needed it.I'll try this first because she doesn't seem to be sick..Debbie

Yes you can see the eggs.Sounds like that is what you are seeing Debbie.

Parasite eggs are microscopic. You can see tapeworm segments or adult worms, but not eggs.

Hi Jalal, Just a question about your comment that you overwintered water lilies in your pond. Did your pond freeze solid, or do you have a spot in the deepest part that doesn't freeze solid? As far as I know, hardy lilies and other perennial pond plants can overwinter in cold water, but not if they end up surrounded by ice. The reason I ask is out of curiosity. My pond is only two feet deep so I don't even try to overwinter the water lilies in there. I remove the tubers, clean them a bit, wrap in paper towel and then in a ziploc bag and overwinter them in the fridge crisper. This works great if anyone is wondering. In spring, when the water is still cool, I just take the tubers and plant them up and drop back into the pond. I do have a mini-cattail that I have overwintered a few ways, one way being sinking the pot into the ground near the house foundation. This also worked for my juncus spiralis. Pickeral weed died this way, however, but it also died when I stored in the fridge crisper. One year I forgot about my mini-cattail and threw it into the unheated shed for winter. And here's my toast to Meghane! (Better late to the party than never, huh?!) Meghane, you have touched so many of our hearts (through our beloved pets) here on the forum. I, myself have a great gratitude for all the help you've given me over the last few years. I'm so glad you let us know where you will be practicing. It's good to know for general travel (recent post re: travel & vet care..), but some of us may also be in the area for extended time. If possible, keep us posted on specifics? Oh, and I for one am hoping for continued contacts with you, now from your practice. Congrats on your graduation!!

Like Meghane, I also have an irrational fear of the dogs escaping our fenced yard. But, both of them have gotten their collar (leather buckle type stuck) on the gate fence post. Both pups were left dangling by the neck. Luckily, I was there for both of these scary situations. Flanagan was lying on the porch and I had the front door open so I could hear him (and could also see him if I walked to the door to look through the screen) anyway, I heard him try to get up, then I heard him struggling. I thought he might have fallen and hurt one of his legs. When I was right next to him I saw the real problem. Part of his collar (a choke type collar) had slid down between the floor boards and then when he tried to move it caused the circle loop to turn sideways. The more he struggled the tighter the collar got. He couldn't breathe. It was a very lucky thing that I was there and got to him so fast. That was the first time...so that's when we decided to switch collar types. Now they never wear their collars but I'm still so afraid of them ever getting out of the yard by accident or chance. Silly

I can't help much with the meds but can tell you I owned a miniature poodle that always had elevated alkphos (in the 600's) for years and one vet finally told me that it was just normal for my dog. He was diagnosed with Cushings in his final 2 years but I was never convinced the tests were accurate since my dog never had 'true' cushings symptoms. The symptoms he did have, and died from, were more indicative of a brain tumor. I wish you the best with your little gal.

What I'm seeing in the feces looks like grains of salt or sand,very small like that.I didn't realize segments could break up that much.

You can't see any parasite eggs by the naked eye. The little grains you see is probably just partially digested food. Tapeworm segments are the size of rice grains, and if your dog is vomiting or passing roundworms, it looks like spaghetti. And no, I don't know why vets insist on describing everything in terms of food. Yuck:(

Take a ziploc bag, turn it inside out over hand, grab a handful of poop and take it your vet. Your vet can do a quick stool check for you. They will look at it under the microscope and tell you what they see.

I agree - I'd take a sample to the vet for testing. If you are concerned about cost, you don't usually need to go in for an office visit if you are dropping the sample off.

After testing the vet can give you the right worm medication for what Sally has - not all medication works for all worms. One of our dogs had worms when we adopted him - it turns out they treated him with the wrong medication and it didn't do anything but put chemicals in his system, the worms stayed safe.

Oh, Lillie, join the club!

Unfortunately, endoparasites do not always throw eggs. Which means the animals can have intestinal parasites yet test negative on a fecal, so if you suspect parasites, or see symptoms, have the pet treated (most shelters dose with anti-parasite drugs because most strays have parasites and most cats/dogs with fleas do have tapeworms) or do multiple fecals for $20 a shot.

A couple of months ago I dropped my cat off for his annual exam. When I picked him up I was told that my vet gave him a dose of wormer because he notices white things near his anus. Turns out the cat had been eating some of the dog's white rice (from a bland diet he was temporarily on). No worms. Sheesh.
