I LOVE THIS STUFF!

Irish Brown Bread

1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
3 Tablespoons toasted wheat bran
3 Tablespoons toasted wheat germ
2 Tablespoons old-fashioned oats
2 Tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoons (1/4 stick) chilled, unsalted butter, cut into pieces
2 cups buttermilk
If you can't get to Ireland to savour their wonderful Brown Bread, this is the best recipe I've found using American whole wheat flour.

Preheat oven to 425°F. Butter a 9x5x3-inch loaf pan.

Combine first 8 ingredients in a large bowl; mix well. Add butter; rub in with fingertips until mixture resembles fine meal. Stir in enough buttermilk to form a soft dough. Transfer dough to prepared loaf pan.

Bake until bread is dark brown and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 40 minutes. Turn bread out of pan and cool right side up on rack.

I am so ready to go back to Ireland. Some of the scenes are very familiar.

Enjoyed the show. It reminded me, I must remember to bring my Irish Soda Bread recipe with me when we leave for vacation since we'll be gone for St. Patty's Day.

Irish Soda Bread

2 C. flour
2T. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3 T butter, softened
1/2 c. seedless raisins, soaked in warm water and drained
1 C buttermilk
1 T. butter, melted

Preheat oven 375

Mix first 5 ingredients. Cut in softened butter with pastry blender or fork until mixture looks like fine bread crumbs. Add raisins. Add buttermilk. Mix with fork only until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn out on lightly floured board. Knead gently until smooth....about 1 minute. Shape into ball Place on greased cookie sheet. Flatten into 7" circle. Dough will be about 1 1/2 inches thick. Press large floured knife onto center halfway through to bottom. Repeat at right angle to divide loaf in quarters. Bake 30 - 40 minutes or until top is golden and loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Place on rack to cool Brush top with melted butter. Later dust with flour. Umm, umm good!

I enjoyed the show very much, Always wanted to go to Ireland and dig around my roots.

Speaking of which, Bobby Flay said his GGGGrandfather married Mary Gaffney. My GGGrandfather's name was Michael Gaffney. Maybe Bobby and I are long-lost cousins.

I ate their brown bread until I found out it was a cleanser, and held up the motorcoach, so I had to stop eating it.

But love that stuff!
