If my house was covered by a drift , I think I'd die from claustrophobia!

WOZER! That's a lot of snow... and totally understandable that school was closed. :)

We had snow halfway up our doors in Ohio, but never anything like that. Holy cow....that is a LOT of snow and a lot of work to dig out.

oh my gosh! I would be freaking out that the whole house could collapse with that much weight on it and around it. Also the claustrophobia thing too.
How did those guys even get out of that house !
Hope no one has an emergency and expects to get anywhere fast.
I would never live in that kind of place, just not for me. I thought Denver was very beautiful and all around there was too but when the blizzards hit and we were getting white outs and feet of snow. I knew I just was not going to be doing that for very long. Two years was plenty.

What if they were in it and it piled up? Or if they are out, they can't get back home! So many awful thoughts.....pets, food, belongings, staying with friends/family or even a center.

That would scare the heck out of me. I can just imagine all the creaking and groaning that house in the first picture is doing.

Yikes! I'll stop complaining about mine now.

Saw some Russian winter pix. Crap. But they must know how to deal with it.

The houses have to be constructed for heavier than normal snow loads. Those that are not, do not last long and are eliminated from the landscape - someting about survival of the fittest. You do have to be concerned about ventilation for yourself and the furnace. You must be willing to wield the shovel. However, snow banked around the walls protects from wind, adds insulation, and makes it easier to heat the place. Its cozy. The downside is living in a snow cave.

So, what do you use for emergency conveyance? Snowmobilies! That's why they were invented. One of the first snowmachines was a converted Model T Ford. A story about that contraption says that a father lost a sick girl after a snowstorm because he could not get her to town for medical attention. Had he been able to do so, she would have survived. He vowed to make a machine that could conquer snowy roads. He used his Model T to make such a machine.

I do recall that a number of years ago when Bufallo, NY got hit with a large amount of snow, the radio and TV stations were warning the population that when they ventured downtown, do not touch the elecrical connections on the traffic lights! The snow pack was deep enough to elevate pedestrans up to where they could touch the traffic lights.

Last night on our national radio they were interviewing a lady in Newfoundland whose house was buried and they were digging it out with a backhoe.

Probably the same one.

The storm door at my back door opens out just over the doorstep, so when there's more than minimal snow, and it blows strongly through the lane between that and the garage ...

... sometimes I have to use the front door to get out.

In that picture in Newfoundland, if there were snow by the chimney, the neighbours would have shovelled the snow away.

Most likely the neighbours in Newfoundland shovelled a track through the snowbank to the most easily accessible door.

It'd be electric lights inside the house till the denizens of the house shovelled a window clear.

Snow is OK for skiing but it really REALLY sucks living with it...I absolutely hate it! UGH! And no I don't live in Arkansas anymore.
